Unfortunately that decisions is up to Xi Jinpooh.

Lady, just relax, China will unify its Chinese province of Taiwan in the right time..
OKuniyoshi
What were the reasons/factors, what were done differently?? when Ma was the president of Taiwan?? When war between China and Taiwan was as far as it is near now?
Clay
Must remind ourselves, many layers of 'war' that are all some form of destabilization - not simply kinetic.
For the world to remain stable, peaceful and prosperous, we must all seek to not destabilize others. That's magic, Taiwan & China need to find this harmony on their own.
However, if destabilization is pursued intentionally, then war will naturally occur in its many forms, that's clear today and historically.
For example, President Erdogan stated US & EU have conducted political war to try and remove him from office.
Why not pursue winning over hearts & minds of others, that's best form of 'war'. China's playing it well these days by promoting non-interference in others domestic matters and mutual interests.

War is not an option, so what are they going to do with all these weapons then?

A true Fifty cent party comment.
China's meddling in Malaysia, Taiwan, Thailand, the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, "secret" police cells in more countries is well known.
However, it's so ineffective, often the results are opposite to what the Chicoms plan.

So never. Got it.

Clearly China under Xi has abandoned the peaceful rise approach.

Deter aggression. It's the primary purpose of weapons.

On relative basis, certainly US has long reach regarding its citizens abroad. They're not meddling in domestic affairs of these counties and that would include exporting inflation via Central Bank Money Printing or political interference as Turkey's President Erdogan states constantly regarding his US and EU 'partners'.
One just has to consider historic Iran Saudi Arabia Peace Accord China just brokered based on this non-interference diplomatic doctrine.
Taiwan's special case for China obviously and it's one China policy but regarding greater world, except for their citizens abroad they're so far keeping hands off approach and not intentionally destabilizing others in a transactional manner but rather pursuing mutually beneficial and peaceful partnerships.
Coulda been

Time to emerge from the fantasy world and realise that China (as with other nations) actively promotes interference in internal affairs of other countries.
WA4TKG
The idea that china is not meddling in the entire WORLD’s politics is asinine.
Hands Off, lol. How’s that sandbar military base out in international waters near Taiwan doing?

Lee Teng-hui? Now that's a blast from the past. The first native Taiwanese to be freely elected (more accurately the first freely elected president who happened to be Taiwan born). Also a Taiwanese president who served as an officer in the Imperial Japan Army.

[ 'War is not an option', Taiwan president says amid China tensions ]
Well, if it is an option, … don’t worry…, we’ve got your back… (!)
Mat
@TokyoLiving, you do know that Taiwan has never been a part of China, right? Like, your complete argument is utter fiction. There are actual books on this stuff, you can find them in the History section.
deanzaZZR
Taiwan became a prefect of Fujian Province in the 17th century. What are you smoking.

@deanzazzr
Same logic!
China was a part of Mongolia around 1280!!
lostrune2
Hahahaha............ whenever Taiwan does something, China always try to interfere, Lol
Remember, China tries to get other countries to cut diplomatic ties with Taiwan. It's always interfering
Taiwan doesn't mind remaining with the status quo. It's China that doesn't want status quo - it wants to annex Taiwan as fast as possible, even by force if that's what it takes. Xi Jinping wants to capture Taiwan to be part of his legacy - to prove that he'll be the most powerful CCP leader ever
China is not the one being peaceful here. For every year that Taiwan remains in charge of its own affairs, that's one more year that adds up to China's impatience - they get angrier and angrier every year, and eventually it'll boil over like a hot-head who loses temper and loses control
deanzaZZR
By you odd "logic" Russia, Iraq and Georgia (Republic) to name just a few are Mongolia.
lostrune2
Nah, not necessarily never
But here's the thing: the only way Taiwan would unify with China is whenever China becomes a democracy with elected leadership
So, how long do any of you think it would take for China to become a democracy? (And not that bogus "democracy with Chinese characteristics" that Xi Jinping spouts)
If you think it'd take a thousand years for China to become a democracy, the right time would be a thousand years then
In short, the right time is when China is a democracy. Pretty simple
OssanAmerica
Taiwan has never been a part of "China" as in the People's Republic of China which was established in 1949.
Taiwan was handed back by Japan to the Republic of China in 1945, the legal representative government of "China" at the time.
Taiwan and the rest of the world would like to maintain the Status Quo. It is only China(PRC) that doesn't.

Their is a comment on here about China 'meddling' in other states, which I will not discuss here. But whoever wrote that comment should read the history of what the USA has done around the world since WW2, it is a bit more than meddling. In many Middle East countries the USA is regarded as a terrorist state. And the USA is now meddling in Taiwan, for its own benefit, not the Taiwanese.
virusrex
War is not an option for peaceful, rational nations, but unfortunately China seems determined to prove it is not included in this category.
TaiwanIsNotChina
Regardless of what the US is doing, China is doing live fire exercises AROUND Taiwan. This is beyond meddling in Taiwan and in the realm of intimidation.
