By "foreign" ships and aircraft in and over international waters, perhaps the Chinese spokesperson is referring to his own country's ships and aircraft? Or is China now saying that this area is Chinese territory?

This flag will have much more meaning to the family than it would have to visitors to the USS Lexington. It is good that it was returned to the family.

Mr. Matsuda was not a war criminal, but a soldier who fought for his country.

I do not agree with what DeSantis says, and I don't like the way he chooses to say what he says. The fact that he was overwhelmingly re elected as Governor of Florida I find incomprehensible, and very frightening.

At times like these, with scoundrels like Trump, Cruz, and DeSantis doing so well in the polls, I am reminded of what Winston Churchill said about democracy...."Indeed it has been said that democracy is the worst form of Government except for all those other forms that have been tried from time to time....."

On the one hand, we have to fear the degradation of the Nuclear Power Plants in Japan, principally due to radiation, and the potential for disaster from future major earthquakes and tsunamis.

On the other hand, we have to fear the release of CO2 from coal and gas powered electric plants that are run as the main replacements for the NPPs that have been shut down.

It is a "damned if we do, and damned if we don't" situation. I hope all practical renewable energy projects are being built as quickly as possible in Japan.

Posted in: Tainted love: Misinformation drives 'vaccine-free' dating See in context

Scientific analysis has determined that the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines have an efficacy rate of 95%. The Chinese vaccine has a rate of 65%, and the Russian vaccine 45%. A neighbor who works in the ICU at a hospital told us that the AstraZeneca vaccine used in Europe has an efficacy rate better than the Chinese vaccine, but not as good as the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines.

Again, I am willing to go along with adults making up their own minds, but not with making up their own facts.

Some of my neighbors refused to get vaccinated against Covid, but isolated themselves, and made it through the pandemic. However, four of my neighbors died from Covid, all of them before the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines became available. Since the vaccines came out, none of my neighbors have died. So, while I am willing to respect the choice of adults not to get vaccinated, I think it is a mistake.

Posted in: DeSantis' 'war on woke' looks a lot like attempts by other countries to deny and rewrite history See in context

What I find particularly egregious about DeSantis is that he is actually a very educated man, which leads me to think that this schtick of his against the made up problem of "wokism" is nothing but a callous attempt to stir up trouble, and to garner support in the process. That he is not ashamed of himself, when he knows better, is a terrible character flaw.

The Romans are said to have enjoyed the results of the roquefort mold. In my humble opinion, it is the one of the top cheeses in the world. So, in response to the question posed by the title to the article, the choice of mold used in food preparation is very, very important.

Now, would someone please pass me some roquefort cheese?

The only way I can see Ohtani staying with the Angels is if they make it to the World Series. If they can do that, he won't need to leave. He makes plenty of money, and he will make more. The key is to get onto a team that is a competitor. The Angels could be that team, even if the odds are not great. Obviously, the fans would love for him to stay.

Posted in: July 2023 set to be world's hottest month on record See in context

While headlines and news articles around the Globe are talking about the link between man made global warming and the current and future heat waves, the principle right-wing propaganda outlet over here, Fox News, is headlining that there is no link between man made global warming and the heat spells, and the Republican "think tanks" are preparing initiatives to reverse the steps taken during the Biden Administration to fight global warming, the next time they are in control of the federal government.

My Dad's favorite saying was "The truth is stranger than fiction." How true. If someone made this story up, I would think they were smoking hallucinogenics. Who in their right mind would still deny the link between man's activities and global warming, and who in their right mind would promote carbon based industries over green technologies? The answer is obvious......the American Right, backed by the American fossil fuel industries.

The parts of the year when it will be a bad idea to visit the Mediterranean will increase, from Summer, to late Spring, Summer, and early Fall.

If the ocean currents make drastic changes, as some scientists are warning, then all bets are off. Personally, I worry about what will happen on the West Coast of the US. Currently we have Mediterranean style weather because of the current that flows down from the Arctic, but if that current stops flowing, coastal California weather might become like Florida weather.......Hot and Humid.

I keep watching these EV articles for more information on what may be the next type of battery, the solid-state, stacked lithium batteries. Theoretically they are cheaper, more dependable, weigh less, can be recharged very quickly, and will have about twice the range of today's lithium batteries. If and when it happens, it will be revolutionary. GM says they are aiming to introduce them in their 2025 product line.

Posted in: As heat records fall, how hot is too hot for the human body? See in context

There was an article addressing this issue a few years ago in Scientific American magazine. The author said that already, at that time, parts of the Middle East were too hot at night for humans to survive during the summer months. Among the population centers, parts of Iran were becoming uninhabitable. As if they didn't have enough problems already. The parts of the Earth that will become uninhabitable will expand over the next few hundred years, given that CO2 has a half life of about 100 years in the air.

I think a good argument can be made that the cheapest and most effective way to deal with the many disasters forecast to be coming our way due to global warming, is to try to stop, and then reverse, global warming.

Ben Franklin said that a penny saved was a penny earned. Well, a pound of carbon not dumped into the ecosphere is as good as a pound of carbon sequestered out of the ecosphere.

Remember pictures of the Sahara Desert? There are no cacti. Recent reports are that cacti in the American deserts are dying, due to the extreme heat. It is so hot that the water inside the cacti is getting cooked off. Will we end up with immense sand dunes, as in the Sahara?
