70 years after first summit, Everest keeps giving

And taking. 11 deaths up there so far this season, on the south side at least. Five of them Sherpas.

The work is hazardous by definition, but in a climbing season of about three months, an experienced guide can make up to $10,000 -- several times the country's average annual income.

The average cost to a climber for an Everest run is around $50,000 US, according to expedreview.com. The Nepalese government issued 478 climbing permits for Everest this season, and 1,176 for the other peaks.

Reaching the base camp itself is much harder in case of K2.
