I understand the umbrellas because they would still allow for some wind or breeze to flow by, but wouldn't the tents be little more than an oven you bake in?

I use to live up the road from here. It beautiful area in summer. Retreat into the interior of the Izu peninsula for some great leavey / stream walks in the forests. Plenty of deer and boar to hunt and not that far from Tokyo.

What an eyesore. They've turned a once lovely beach into Tent City.

I think every prefecture in Japan has a "Shirahama Beach".

Bill is right. I went camping last weekend and the tent was like an oven in the daytime. Perfectly fine at night but could not sit in it during the day and certainly couldn't nap in the early noon. The umbrellas are a much better idea due to the wind.
Just my personal opinion.

Beautiful picture, everything is so green. This time of the year everything turns brown over here.

Huh? This is no different to any beach, anywhere, in the height of summer.

@Tamarama,
You are spot on.

Low season its a great place.

We have our own local beach but too many tourists this time of the year.

We don't pitch tents on our beaches. It utterly defeats the point of going to the beach to soak up the sun and enjoy fresh air and being outdoors. Tents are for campsites.
