More weapons aren't the solution to peace in the region

If it is not the solution, then what is the solution? I think it is the solution. The idea that we wait, and allow other countries to develop weapons that can defeat us, most certainly isn't the solution. The way to maintain peace is to ensure the enemy doesn't feel confident enough to start a war and win a war. I think we saw that when Russia invaded Crimea, we saw that when Russia invaded the Donbas region, we saw that when Russia invaded Ukraine. I propose that if Ukraine had more weapons and effective weapons, then Putin would not have felt confident to invade another sovereign country. It seems there are some leaders, who want to build up their forces to attack another. It's our job to make sure they don't have that advantage. I think the 1930s also showed what happens when one country builds up its armed forces, and the rest stand by in appeasement. It is also one of the reasons there hasn't been another world war, since 1945.

The armorer is responsible for all weapons. She is supposed to be the weapons expert, and is there to make ALL weapons are safe. It is clear that not ALL actors are trained in weapons and that’s why there is an armored. She should never have had any live rounds anywhere near the set. Except on a shooting range. The armorer is responsible for picking up the weapons and cocking it, and checking the chamber, and to confirm it is clear. And getting the other person to witness is and say clear.(or whatever words they use) In my experience she was the last person to check it’s safety and hand it over in a safe condition. Clearly it wasn’t. No weapon should ever be left unattended so that a live rounds can be put in between scenes. Basically if you find a weapon, assume it’s loaded. Picked up the weapon, check it, in front of the other person who is to receive it. Still no reason for live rounds on a set. She’s the armorer and I guess the buck stops with her for bringing rounds onto the set. ( if someone else brought rounds onto the set, she should still have give through the safety procedure.

Might also be a great idea to have a summit debate on wether or not dropping the A bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki was actually justified.

mill wait for the Japan today down votes. LoL

i guess this is one summit to create a bogey man for the LDP so they can keep bring this up at every election.

kinda feels like brainwashing. I guess these hand picked students aren’t the students who challenge authorities.

I hope they invest the extra , so it can pay the bills for a long term, instead of blowing it.

$3.4 million is about 489,530,300円 at todays rate. So i hope they can invest the rest, and reap the rewards in the future when the fuel bills fall.

Is it just me, but if anyone on Japan Today criticizes anything to do with Japan, it seems to be downvoted. Almost nationalistic. As times get hard, the Royal Family should be made accountable financially to the public, so that Japan is getting good value for their taxpayer's money. The days of the Gods are over. They can be respected but respect is earned. They are there to work for the people of Japan , and not just sit on the throne.

Larr Flint...

The Nikkei.asia edition today has a report about 12,000 mainly Vietnamese on the trainee worker scheme that have "gone missing" in Japan. So some seem quite keen to come and stay.

Well clearly they are cheating the system, and if they are found in violation of their visa, then they should be returned home. However, while the training system is at times abused, by employers and employees, some are given real jobs and are welcome.

Well, all those advocating for more INFLATION might not realize companies may not increase worker's salaries to match or beat inflation so they are poorer. In the meantime shareholders are getting richer. I think countries/governments want inflation to lower the national debt ratio over that 30-year time. They say we don't want to pass debt down to the next-gen but that is what they do anyway, I'm still waiting for my own country to be "DEBT FREE". Oh, how many decades have they kept saying the same old excuse?

For they sow the wind, and they shall reap the whirlwind.” And Winston Churchill was right. Japan today is still removing most comments in support of dropping the bomb. Japan started the war after many warnings by the League of Nations. Economic embargo implemented ( not dissimilar to Russia today).and after attacking the USA. While Japan times maybe becoming more controlling, almost like China, I still believe the a bomb while abhorrent saved many more lives. Especially our our allies. We also might consider that Japan was part of an axis of evil, with Hitler, Mussolini and Tojo. All evil dictators.

I don’t think sushi shop were going to get that much out of a child and the parents may have paid something, or they may not. But if my kids did something stupid like that, I wouldn’t pay the company a single yen. I’d give him a clip around the head, make him apologize, and if they allowed him to wash the dishes I’d get him to do that. That would be the end of the matter with maybe a few things at home. Grounding or canceling his phone. Thankfully stupidity , and embarrassment can teach people a lesson.

A good step in the right direction, but there will be consequences to this idea. Some will start to see anchor babies. While this is a good idea we do need to see how some Japanese people may not be happy with this immigration policy and mitigate any problems. Certainly some social education on immigration, why it’s needed, benefits to society, and how they’ll deal with those that may……. How shall we say……. Fall foul of the law, but know no other country but Japan . Definitely a good step in the right direction and I hope Japan can look at issues that the USA, France and Germany etc have and dealing with the far right who WILL oppose this.

Tad late on that. However, I would have a question about these drugs and how it was tested. While the drugs on the West were probably tested on people from multi-cultural backgrounds, my guess is Japan might have only tested on "JAPANESE" people, and knowing by experience Japanese doctors might end up bringing the " We in Japan use smaller doses, compared to Gaijin" I'm sure many of us have experienced this. Anyway, I hope we can see the research, where it was tested, and in what groups. Medicines that are supposed to be used by any group should be trialled on all groups, to ensure efficacy.

Let's stop using the word terrorism. It weakens the real meaning of the word terrorism. Personally, I blame the Americans for calling anything and everything TERRORism now. I remember terrorism was supposed to be about a group of people with a political aim, bombing, hijacking and killing people. Licking a bottle is in NO way "Terrorism". Get a grip! If you want to use an English word please use it properly. Sushi terrorism gives me images of some Japanese person blowing stuff up. Now the gas attack in Tokyo was terrorism!

Age is just there for lawyers and cops to implement the law. It doesn't actually mean he IS an adult. How many of us at 17 were so mature we never did stupid things?

But I think what happened in the past is some old lady or old man, complained because someone was thirsty or hungry and bought something at the shop. Then someone in the office said. Let's make it a rule, instead of saying to the old man or woman, thank you for your concern, and putting it down to a ridiculous citizen and getting on with their real job.

We must control people by making up rules. More rules, and even if there isn't a rule. Just tell them.."It's the rule". Then watch them squirm when you ask for them to show us the rule "in writing".

What a difference 3 years makes... From unprecedented talks (first ever since the 1950s) to the now near-daily missile launches. Thanks Joe!

And how exactly does Joe get the blame? How about the great Trump who was going to get his sorted in weeks? if not days? How about Obama? hang I think I might need to go back to Bush, Clinton and Bush.

You sound like a Republican fan boy. Both parties were in power, and no matter what we did, N Korea were going to do what they wanted to. Have you forgotten the sinking of the South Korean warship? Or the shelling over the DMZ? It doesn't matter who is in power. Not to mention all the other attacks in Korea post Korean War. It really only depends on who is in power in NORTH KOREA.

and what will Japan do about it? Absolutely nothing! Say it again. What will Japan doing about it? Absolutely nothing. Yep! Let’s leave North Korea alone. If they attack then we can deal with it. But basically we aren’t goi g to send tanks over.not gonna bomb them. And if it does kick off, I’m not gonna expect Japan to give any more than what they’ve given Ukraine. But on saying that…. I wonder if the South Koreans might be happy if everyone else says, “ we can’t send you any ammo” but , “we send you ammo through a third party” to replenish their ammo stocks. Kind of like how South Korea has given support to Ukraine.

I’d rather have some deflations compared to some countries inflation and the brutal pain it’s inflicting on the working class. Ofcourse the wealthy will do well no matter what the interest rates are and they’ll do well no matter what the stock market does. The stock market isn’t the economy. We might as well enjoy our money now, while we’re young. Because they want us to stay home, and just save save save, for the next 40 odd years. Then we can get some of it back to stay at home and pay for the grand kids.

What a great movie to show some history on why the bomb was created, and how it had an impact on Japan, and the Cold War, and open up an awareness of what would happen if the Germans, Japan, or the Soviet Union were first. Japan nuclear program. While Japan may wish to say how evil these weapons were, they are completely unaware that Japan itself was chasing the very same weapon. I hope this movie comes here. Would be great if we had a Japanese version based on the Ni-Go project and the Jin Project. Hostory could have been very different.

I wonder if we associate food made in a factory as good and healthy and a sign of wealth. But it’s also a doubles edge sword, women/mothers predominantly did the cooking in the 50s 60s and stayed more at home. Now the women are expected to be equal, have a career, work, and to some extent still find the energy, and time to be a good cook and mother. Step in the freezer food meals, higher in fat, sugar and salt and we can give our kids more snacks because we feel guilty we’re too tired to spend time with kids. So the parents and schools train a generation in the 70s coke was good, potatoe chips are healthy/fun and chocolate is a harmless treat. Playing video games, have a bag of chips too. Maybe big pharma is only trying to clean up the mess junk food factories churn out and we want to have our cake and eat it. No pun intended. As someone once sang junk food tastes soooo good, because it’s bad for you.

I wonder if we have now reached the point that food companies can make high calorie foods with high fat, sugar content, and pass all the consequent health sequelae onto the state. Eat pizza, hamburgers and frozen tv diners then pop in an injections. It’s as though the medical system is there to clean up the food industries and government policies mess. No problem sir, make more junk food for the kids, who might become obese adults and make those use profits and we’ll get the health services to clean up the mess in a few decades. In the meantime farmers producing crops often struggle. A better way might to have a fat tax, and cut taxes on fruit and veg. I might help! I just think this will be another lifestyle drug. But cheaper than say surgery and easier than some exercise. Did we have this problem in the 1950,1960s1970s? If not, what changed?

I think we have a woman who had too much money and could pay for any operation she wanted, even though there was no real medical reason for the surgery. The doctors, imho, did this like many docs to the famous and rich, do it for MONEY and bragging rights. I guess if it is not illegal, and she was fully aware of all the risks, there is probably very little they can do. Although I do think ethically, the docs were....how shall we say.... unethical. FIRST. Do no harm. Did she have a medical condition that really warranted such an operation apart from vanity and wanting to look sexy for a few pics? If the answer is no, then the docs should have said Sorry You don't need it. That would have been the most ethical approach. But I guess, that's capitalism. She paid for it in cash, and she paid for it with her life.

Maybe NATO doesn't need an office here, but Japan should set one up in NATO HQ, and be invited as a third country. We have seen how flakey Japan has been towards Ukraine, so this benefits Japan way more than say any other member.NATO is a defence organisation and sending a few jeeps, and trucks, while nice might not be on my shopping list if I was attacked by say China or Russia. I would need to see a bit more of an effort. If it was a school report it would read, and pays attention, very nice, but could do much better if Japan applied itself more.

Some of my replies defending this woman and her family have been taken down. I think the mods are kinda going OTT. Whether we agree or disagree, we should be able to offer a rebuttal and criticize the Japanese authorities.

Anyway, respect to the family because it is families and sadly victims, that will bring change to Japan. Trying to hold someone responsible for their negligence, incompetence or even institutional racism. You can't take someone into custody and let them die. Especially when the patient has been complaining for a month. I do think though some of us are lucky to have white privilege here. I see quite a few people of colour dying in custody here. I may be wrong, but I do think it warrants some objective research.

Dead Sri Lankan detainee's family calls for officials to be indicted

Well, that ain't going to happen. Japan is a country where you aren't even a citizen with EQUAL RIGHTS under the law. Somehow, they'll justify it because they broke the law first. The value of a foreigner's life is much less than say....a Japanese kid licking a soya sauce bottle in a sushi shop. We are dealing with a government, that doesn't value us, cause you expected to go home when you retire. The institutions themselves may have some racial bias too. Consciously or unconsciously! Someone in the prosecution office probably sat there, and said, " shoganai" and if the individuals can't be charged, then the institution is guilty for the actions and inactions of its staff.

Almost everyone I know that works in this industry is BROKE or about to go BROKE, low salaries, poor services, hard schedules, and most of all KITCHI BOSSES.

The salary is poor and the working conditions are pretty bad, sometimes very unsocial. Poor service is controlled by staffing levels. Higher staffing levels means you can have more time to play games with the residents, and do reminiscence therapy. I wouldn't say ketchi bosses, because they have to balance the books at the end of the day. It's just that everyone says they want to pay more for it, but in reality, while they are young and healthy, they don't really want to. What they really mean is...They want everyone "ELSE" to pay for it via taxes...but not them!
