Apparently at the end of his leaked opinion draft, Justice Alito cited Sir Matthew Hale, a 17th century jurist. Sir Hale did not believe that there was such a thing as marital rape, but he did believe in witches. Crazy.

Policies concerning the coronavirus as well as most other health issues are made by the provincial governments and not by the federal government.

The truckers and their supporters might have been better off hiring lobbyists who know to whom they should talk to to try to persuade the provincial governments to change their vaccine mandates.

Posted in: The 'sore loser effect': Rejecting election results can destabilize democracy and drive terrorism See in context

Perhaps the arrest earlier this week of Russian business Vladislav Klyushin will clear this up. He and several others has been accused of hacking into the computer systems of companies such as Tesla. A connection to the 2016 hacking of Democratic emails? Not proven, yet. But...

The sad thing about the former President is that he actually had a chance to get beyond the Democratic and Republican impasse. Remember his meeting with Sen. Schumer and Speaker Pelosi? Had he been seen as making a deal to bring both parties together, we would be talking about a different American political reality. Instead...

Burning Bush,

President Biden has tried that and more. But when the other side refuses to come to the table, refuses to compromise, and substitutes appearances on Fox for dialogue. When the other side actively undermines what the President is trying to do....

The Republicans' greatest fear is that President Biden and his administration will succeed without any Republican assistance and will transform the United States into a country that actually embraces diversity, accepts equality, and eradicates discrimination.

Best wishes,

Given the historically low levels of interest rates and control of both houses of Congress and the Presidency, one would have thought that the Republicans would have seized the opportunity the fund rebuilding America's future.

Posted in: In a first, Congress overrides Trump veto of defense bill See in context

One possible reason for the President's vetoing the defense bill is an attachment to the bill: the Corporate Transparency Act, which apparently bans anonymous shell companies.

One possible consequence of the ban is making it more difficult for foreign interests to use these shell companies to hide their contributions to American election campaigns.

Another possible consequence? Making it more difficult for individuals to hide their income and profits from the IRS.

And still the President's veto of this bill was overridden by a Republican Senate. Go figure...

Posted in: Biden says Trump aides setting 'roadblocks' for his transition team See in context

Perhaps one reason for President Trump's veto of the National Defense Appropriation Act (NDAA) is a tack on called the Corporate Transparency Act, which would effectively ban anonymous shell companies and severely weaken their use for illegal purposes.

Support for the Corporate Transparency Act has been building even before Trump became President. Apparently, the American Treasury Department as well as law enforcement agencies, both American and foreign, will have access to the names of the owners as well as financial information of these anonymous (for now) shell companies.

The House has voted to override the President's veto. Will Senate Majority leader Mitch McConnell allow a vote to override? Hmmm...

Posted in: Asian stocks gain after Trump criticizes economic aid bill See in context

The President's staff could have made it clear to Senate and House Republicans that he wanted $2000 / $4000 going to individuals / families. Why didn't he do that when it would have a difference in negotiations. As it is, it looks like the Democrats in the House and the Senate have the President's ear! (Note: "Looks like" means "appears to be" not "is".)

Perhaps, not a helpful tactic during the the two Georgia Senate Republican campaigns.

Posted in: Asian stocks gain after Trump criticizes economic aid bill See in context

Why do you suppose President Trump did not bring up giving $2000 per individual and $4000 per family when it could have made a difference during the campaign? Nor did he bring this up when the House and Senate were negotiating.

And, as I write, President Trump has vetoed the National Defense Authorization Act. Perhaps because Twitter and Facebook, etc. made him look bad?

The greatest something, I suppose.

Perhaps President Trump's latest best friend is Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the President of Turkey.

From a New York Times story: One reason for then US Attorney Geoffrey Berman's firing was that he was trying to prevent a Turkish state-owned bank from illegally funneling billions to Iran in violation of U.S. sanctions.
