Remember when Russia and the world were all getting along, before Putin came to power? It was the US that was causing all the problems of the world and the US wasn't paying any attention to Russia.

You seem to have slept through the Cold War. It makes an interesting read. Russia, or the mythical Soviet Union if you prefer, was very active around the world - and not just with distributing the collected works of V. I. Lenin.

Following up on yesterday's Proxy War debate. As we agreed Russia's effort to militarize Cuba in early 1960's led to US invasion of Cuba & establishment of Guantanamo Bay, Large US Military Base there today.

Guantanamu was established in 1903 after the Spanish-American War. Nothing to do with Russians.

What’s this “As we agreed …” false history? Just google it.

Card, the US only major NATO member in the Western Hemisphere

Canada was a founding member of NATO. I don’t think Canadians consider themselves a minor member of the alliance. And, at last report, Canada is still in the Western Hemisphere as is Chile.

The rightwingers believe their nationalism is for the sake of the emperor but since the the former and current emperor have both rebuffed their claims it shatters their credibility

Some extremists will always adapt. Ideology isn’t important. Violence is. Many toughs among Germany’s communists simply became toughs for the Nazis. Ideology was irrelevant compared to the thrill of beating people up.

People are getting more desperate due to the sluggish economy.

This comment is in the same vein seen in other posts: Theft is an act of desperation by the poor and in any case can be afforded by the rich and insurance companies.

This attitude was expressed again and again during the “George Floyd Riots” in America in 2020 and are likely to be repeated in this summer’s coming “Jordan Neely Riots”.

Clever, but largely untrue. Yes, there must be cases of desperation theft here in Japan and elsewhere. However, knocking over a jewelry store for 100s of millions is not an act triggered by miserable poverty.

Such crimes are now often characterized as acts of retribution against the rich by the poor. Nonsense. For as much as some people rant against the rich being rich, their screams are more of envy: Why am I not rich?

As for insurance, many businesses in the USA have and more will shut their doors permanently because they cannot afford to pay rising premiums. Their services are then lost and produce the so-called “deserts” in urban areas. (This man-made “urban warming” effect can be stopped.)

Why did no one intervene? The thieves used the element of surprise. How many by-standers have the presence of mind AND the will to intervene? In this case, none. But what if someone had acted and injured a thief? Would he or she have been lauded as a hero or arrested for assault? The latter is what would probably have happened in the USA where the population has slowly been conditioned to be unresponsive to blatant criminality.

A lot of old houses in Suzu. I drove through that area last summer so I know. Earthquakes aren't that common in that region too. Could be a sign of things to come.

Posted in: Nuclear power advocates say it is a necessary energy source that will buy the time needed to develop cleaner and safer alternatives. Do you agree with this view? See in context

The other three, at Fukushima Daiichi, lost power at 3.42 pm, almost an hour after the earthquake, when the entire site was flooded by the 15-metre tsunami. This disabled 12 of 13 backup generators onsite and also the heat exchangers for dumping reactor waste heat and decay heat to the sea. The three units lost the ability to maintain proper reactor cooling and water circulation functions. Electrical switchgear was also disabled. - World Nuclear Association

Auxillary power and switches knocked out by flooding. The root cause of both is the same: tsunami driven water flooding vital areas. The precaution would have been the same: greater distance or higher sea wall. The most significant point is that the seismic activity itself did not cause the radiation problem.

I don’t mind existing plants in areas without tsunamis being turned back on.

Fukushima became a problem because the auxiliary power was knocked out by the tsunami topping the sea wall. If the auxiliary power unit had not be located where it was, the reactor could have been safely dealt with.

Republicans will never be President for the next 100 years, due too young White women voting for Democrats

This was the mantra before the 2016 election. To paraphrase, “Demographics are destiny and they favor the Democratic Party remaining in power for the foreseeable future.” That didn’t work out so well, did it? Demographics are shifting away from the Democrats recent messaging. Their only chance is to restore the labor-friendly, working class-based values of the party’s past, but of that they show zero inclination.

He doesn't look presidential. His own party doesn't even support him and America will vote for Biden over the bigot.

One of the many boring, predictable, ultra-leftist posts on this site. As for “his own party”, that may turn out to refer to Biden, especially if by some miracle Trump fails to win the Republican nomination. 14% of Democrats polled support RFK, Jr. who has always been a non-entity despite the famous name.

Coal or nuclear, take your pick. Wind, solar, hydro are fine but will NEVER be nearly enough. Societies in East Asia, South Asia, Africa and South America need more and more power to climb out of poverty.

No. Not a blockade. An embargo of scrap metal and oil. Cutting off their (the military’s) ability to function as an aggressor in China.
