Tokyo Vice is a great book.
This should be worth a watch.

“Tokyo Vice” is loosely based on a non-fiction firsthand account by Jake Adelstein, who spent years in Japan and worked for a top newspaper.
Congratulations to Jake for getting the recognition he deserves.

The "firsthand account" is hardly "non-fictional," according to quite a few people I know who know Jake and his work. Just take a look at the bland and press-release-based crime reportage in the Yomiuri Shimbun and try to reconcile it with the bold and dramatic descriptions in "Tokyo Vice" of his (alleged) crime reporting activities while working at that newspaper. Two different worlds.

No mention of Jake Adelstein or Michael Mann, who directed the pilot and is executive producer? Can't wait to binge this.

Jake gave a lecture for a journalism class I was taking in Tokyo once. Really interesting guy and he has the craziest stories. So crazy you couldn’t even make it up. Then after the lecture he invited anyone who wanted to join for beers. Good for him.

Miami! Remember that Miami Vice episode that featured the yakuza?

Yeah, not enough tea yet and must remember to read all the article before posting. Why no mention of Michael Mann though, Manhunter, Heat and Collateral are great films.

Sounds great! Any info on how can we watch it, legally, in Japan?

Like many have already mentioned, Tokyo Vice is an awesome book. One of my favorites on Japan. If you like this show or want an even more in-depth look at this topic, get the book.

I read Jake Adelstein’s book as well as other articles he wrote over the years and I hope this show is just as good. It’s what got me REALLY interested into what goes on in Japan even further. PLEASE let it be good!

There's no VICE in Tokyo, everything is legal
Nosui
Excellent, thank you Earsay.
I had just got around to cancelling WOWWOW… now I regret it!

They're all accidents!
And some stuff that's illegal in other countries, are legal in Japan ;-]

I'll never quite understand the Human interest in psychopaths and their mindless abuse of the people around them, particularly as 'entertainment'.

To think that the Japanese police would give time to a foreign reporter is straining the bounds of reality so I guess it can only be fiction…

I read the book--a well-written piece of fiction; although the author claims it is factual.

I wonder if the Yaks are getting a cut from this film or from Ken?

Similar to 1989 Black Rain (Not to be confused with same title by Shohei Imamura)

Tokyo Vice?
Cringe.
