Because of course he did. I would be surprised if Mori were NOT taking bribes from everyone in sight.

Mori will go down as one of the least popular prime ministers and one of the most corrupt. When he was younger, he was often seen in the company of yakuza. Knew it was more bad news when I found out he was involved in the Olympics.

Mori is corrupt?! You don't say!

24 ( +37 / -13 )

Anyway, you can’t blame the New capitalism for that. lol

Reuters reported in 2020 that a non-profit entity run by Mori was paid more than $1 million by the Tokyo Olympic bidding committee during the campaign to secure the Games. The largely unknown entity ceased all activity at the end of December 2020, it said on its website at that time.

I was under the impression it closed its doors the day after getting the money.

This is becoming quite good, with a little luck a lot of things may come into the light and heads roll, not very optimistic about it but people can dream.

I say if I were wealthy enough like him at his age, I wouldn't ruin my own name for just 2million yen bribery.

Read original Sankei news, 関係者によると、青木容疑者は調べに対し、2回に分けて森氏に現金を直接手渡したと供述。趣旨については「がん治療をしていた森氏へのお見舞いだった」としている。

Sure it is too weird to bring cash for get-well kiss at hospital visit.

One thing I would think is that politicians are too nervous , and yet, too accustomed to receiving cash

Oh look. Yet another crooked politician. What else is new?

2 ( +13 / -11 )

Ah, the 2021 Tokyo Olympics.

Worst and most embarrassing Olympics in history...and it still isn't done yet!

14 ( +17 / -3 )

I am surprised by the amount of money given, its not that much and not worth the reputation, its like take it and buy a pen or a watch but nothing too extravagant.

Great job prosecutors. Keep it up. I hope they go after all of them and keep hammering until no officials would still have the nerve to propose to bid for the 2030 winter olympic.

Folks the ldp has been accepting brown envelopes from all kinds of people, businesses since 1945 NON-STOP! This article is about the insanely corrupt olympics, but just look, it took abe being assassinated for the "J-Press" to look into this corrupt church and its political connections, just one of 1000s of instances of bribes & kick backs etc. This IS JAPANESE CULTURE, just is.....sadly

Why isn't Mori in detention with no access to lawyer, to his wife and with light on all day ?

15 ( +15 / -0 )

This is getting better day by day.

5 ( +5 / -0 )

Hang on... I thought these guys and Mori said there was no bribery! Surely they were not lying and Japan's bid was completely clean!

Follow the money trail, now just think who is going to believe a suspected criminal?

The former chairman of Tokyo Olympics sponsor Aoki Holdings has told prosecutors he gave 2 million yen ($14,300) in cash to the head of the Games' organizing committee, former prime minister Yoshiro Mori, the Sankei daily reported.

OMG. Mr. Mori can't resign again because men talk too much!! Or Can He?

5 ( +6 / -1 )

Chump change. I don’t imagine you would pay U.S.-based consulting firms or two consultants in cash either. There’s a reason Japan is still a cash society, a big one!

Let it all come out to the light of day so we can finally turn the page on the old guard and their ‘methods’ of getting things done. Sort of cool in a way, old school ( bit gangsta ), but time to move on ay?

The Olympics needs a thorough and utter clean up. The entire council may need replacing. If the athletes have to be clean to compete, so must the business interests , career bureaucrats and sponsors.

No need to throw out the baby with the bath water either; can and must be done.

Peak human performance on all fronts is the goal.

I just knew even as a gaijin that there was bribery somewhere in this. The citizens were explicit about it in their street demonstration signs - 'No Tokyo Olympics 2021' in Japanese and English. Yet they occurred and even more people got sick from CoVid, and the cases went up in Japan too. Nobody gave a damn. Money talks, BS walks. Big Money Got No Souuuuuullllllll.....

Mori doesn’t look more than a day past dead.

what’s he doing with all that dirty money anyway these days?

buying up adult diapers?

-1 ( +4 / -5 )

The Tokyo District Public Prosecutors Office said it would not comment on the cases.

It’s cute how they willy nilly leak the information of their torture, sorry I mean interrogation, but won’t “comment” on it.

Looks like every Rat for himself…

I think an exclusion is in order for Japan for at least 2 Olympics for corruption.

0 ( +3 / -3 )

2 million yen, it doesn't take much does it...

3 ( +3 / -0 )

Would a mere 2cm even register with Mori?

Arrested Tokyo 2020 sponsor exec says he gave cash to Japan's ex-PM Mori: report

great! now can we please have no more Olympics in Japan AND can someone please arrest that scumbag?

Not holding my breath on either...

Why isn't Mori in detention with no access to lawyer, to his wife and with light on all day ?

because he's a LDP politician not a FOREIGN CEO

HUGE difference

-1 ( +8 / -9 )

ahhhh.........., the plot thickens!

1 ( +2 / -1 )

No doubt Mori declared this gift for tax purposes?

Because if he didn't, he's a crook twice over.

And we all know nothing will come of it. It's SOP for these SOBs.

I'm old enough to remember when former PM Ryutaro Hashimoto got busted for accepting a brown envelope stuffed with millions of yen from the Japan Dental Association. When asked about it, his defence was "Oh, I don't remember. Lots of people give me envelopes with cash in".

Then he stepped down and continued his life of luxury.

Mori has already stepped down and sleeps soundly on a bed of our money every night. There will be no penalty for him, and there will be cash exchanged over tabletops in Ginza tonight. Because why not? There is no penalty, and greed, for want of a better word, is good.

-3 ( +5 / -8 )

Even before becoming prime minister, Mori was described in the Japanese media as having "the heart of a flea and the brain of a shark"

Very fitting
