0.019 grams of weed?! That's so little that if it spilled off to the side when you're rolling a joint, you wouldn't even bother scraping it up and putting it back in, you'd just sweep it off the table! Japan needs to lighten up.

In my country, police train stalkers by tuning them up back at the station.

Works pretty good, we don't have many repeat stalkers.

Posted in: Japanese high school kids average 12% correct answers in English oral test See in context

My niece is a college student with very strong reading and writing skills, but she can barely string a sentence together. Her listening comprehension is almost non-existent. I blame Japanese English teachers who don't even make the slightest effort to improve THEIR OWN spoken abilities, let alone that of their students.

She's hopping on a plane by herself next week to come visit us in the US (New England), and I'm really hoping that the wake-up call she's about to get doesn't discourage her too much. She's worked very hard with her English, and her limitations are no fault of her own. Perhaps a miracle will happen and it will start to click during the two weeks she's here with us.

It's a shame Japan is stuck in this rut. There's something to be said for the familiar Japanese adage they all say: "Japanese can't speak English". Perhaps it just gets in their heads and closes many them off from sincere effort, as if "it can't be helped", the negative side of the same coin where Japanese ears can hear the beauty of the cicadas chirping while my foreign ears cannot. It just can't be helped, Japanese are different.

It's too bad they put war criminals in Yasukuni, because that's what it is firmly associated with. Because for millions of families, it's the resting place for unfortunate young loved ones who were pulled away from their budding lives to needlessly die for a lost cause.

Sounds like the perfect candidate for my new study abroad program for prisoners. He can be the guest of the Alabama Department of Corrections, doing a 6-month homestay at St. Clair Correctional Facility.

There he will enjoy the cultural enrichment of learning how incarceratied American convicts treat child rapists in maximum security prisons.

Posted in: Do you think summers are hotter now than when you were younger? See in context

Hotter, here in New England? Not really.

What's been getting worse are odd weather patterns we get locked into. For the past several summers, we've either had weeks of nearly daily rain, often heavy (we received 2 months [8"] worth off rain in one day last Saturday, causing lots of flash flooding with roads being washed out), or a summer with almost no rain. We haven't had a balanced summer in a few years. Farmers have lots significant crops to drought or root rot from too much water.

First things that come to mind are that the victim was very slight and slender, rail thin. You know the type.

Or the assailant was a big, brawny gal.

Or both.

That's quite the beating for a girl to to throw either way.

Funny how when a Japanese yogurt drink company or toothpaste manufacturer has a 2% price increase, the board of directors goes on camera giving a deep and shameful bow to the honorable customers, but then JR raises the price of a Japan Rail Pass by 70% (hundreds of dollars) in one fell swoop and nobody says a damn thing.

Currently the upper atmosphere jet stream that circumnavigates the northern hemisphere at middle latitudes is completely erratic and discombobulated. Have a look at an animated map, easy to find on Google.

I live in New England and many areas here have been experiencing the same thing as Akita for the past week.

Posted in: Japan space agency rocket explodes during engine test See in context

This is not a bad thing. It was a test. Those were results. Much will be learned form them.

NASA is very risk-adverse when developing physical hardware, even when no lives are at stake. Taxpayer money is taken quite seriously there (unlike many of our gubment agencies). SpaceX on the other hand sees catastrophic failure as being a great learning experience and isn't afraid to blow a bunch of stuff up during development. That's the main reason why they make progress with development much quicker than NASA.

Government space agencies could use a page from that playbook.

Posted in: Food allergies among Japanese school kids up 1.8 points from fiscal 2013 See in context

People get mad when it's suggested that this might be caused by newer vaccines, as being an "anti-vaxxer" is now associated with racist Republican Trump supporters (as opposed to of the liberal crunchy granola crowd who made up the anti-vaxxer movement pre-Covid, who nobody really batted an eye at).

I'm not sure if it's vaccines or GMO foods or some kind of insecticide or something else, but something is going on. Kids here in the US also have all sorts of allergies now that weren't an issue in previous generations. We all took peanut butter and jelly sandwiches to school as kids and it wasn't an issue, whereas now peanuts are banned in schools because there are lots of kids who could go into shock just touching a table that somebody got some peanut butter on.

I think we need to be open-minded when we try to figure this one out. Likely in 10-20 years we'll know what the culprits are. Getting mad because plausible theories clash with one's political views and trying to cancel people for considering those theories isn't going to help.

My buddy and I did a 3-day backpacking trip across the Towada-Hachimantai National Park and we took a trail across a barren mountainside through a bunch of steam vents. Our eyes stung bad and we felt a little ill after. I'm wondering if we walked through that same crap.

Posted in: Mother gets suspended sentence for leaving body of newborn daughter in coin locker See in context

This keeps happening. I really hope the government puts on an information campaign to educate people about the no-questions-asked baby hatches at hospitals where a newborn can be left safely.

The adoption rate in Japan is pretty low and lots of orphans end up institutionalized until they reach legal adulthood. Perhaps these young women are concerned that the child would have a terrible childhood and a poor lot in life. In the US, there are so many families looking to adopt that some may not find a child. I hope US adoption agencies are aware of Japan’s adoption situation and working inside that country, as Japan does allow international adoptions.

Japan wants everything in Japan to be on that list. I'm surprised the recycling bin out in front of Lawson's hasn't been nominated yet. The lengths little countries go to to get noticed. I hope nobody breaks the news to them that 99% of everyone else doesn't know what the hell the UNESCO list is and wouldn't give a crap even if they found out...
