They are working on a way to make his visit to Taiwan 'different' to Nancy's without revealing that it's because he's a Republican and not a Democrat. They'll expect us to believe them and not laugh too much.

China's (and by China's, I mean Xi's) behavior regarding Taiwan border on the schizophrenic. The island has been sovereign from the mainland since 1949. China's actions today should reflect reality, not wishful thinking.

Taiwan has a complicated history. It was invaded by the Qing in the late 17th century. It took two centuries for the Qing to conquer the island, only to cede it to Japan in 1895. It was ceded to the Nationalist Chinese government in 1945, who retreated there from the mainland in 1949. Xi has decided that the island should again be part of a greater Chinese empire, with him as Emperor.

The US had nuclear weapons in Taiwan and they were there for the Communists. The Communists told the US to remove them and in 1972, Nixon ordered nuclear weapons to be removed from Taiwan. This was implemented by 1974. Nuclear weapons are known to have been stored at Tainan Air Force Base.

This is the only time, where a country literally told the US to do as it says and the US complied. No other examples to my knowledge.

Absolutely. They left Taiwan to the Communists and that's why they're on a tiny island instead of mainland to begin with. They left South Korea, South Vietnam, Afghanistan government, and most recently Ukraine.

He didn't, Taiwan is part of China, Taiwan also asserts that it is part of China and that its govt is the one that has jurisdiction over the entire country

Doubtful. Manufacturing is moving out of China into cheaper labor areas of the world. Heck, even Mexico is cheaper labor than China now. In SE Asia, Vietnam, Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand all have manufacturing that's cheaper than China today.

The CCP oppression overhead is destroying China's manufacturing competitiveness. Add in that China will steal intellectual property and not even deny it is another reason to avoid business with that country until the CCP is gone and rule of law finally happens within an open society.

I'm glad you feel we should have done more to snuff out the CCP. Unfortunately, with the backing of the CCP by the Soviet Union and the US tired of war after WW2, this didn't happen. The CCP really owes its corrupt existence to the SU.

South Korea was a win for the US. Government is still there. So are Germany, Japan, and Iraq. Ukraine has yet to be decided but seems 90% likely or more Zelenskyy will continue. You really need to come up with better examples if only 50% of them are correct.

Sadly, that isn't true. There are lots of reasons to visit China even if you don't like the CCP. Many Americans have married Chinese nationals and visiting their family is something they do yearly. Of course, most choose to outside China, but there are many Americans living with their spouses inside China too.

Some Americans, without any ties to China at all, can still be fascinated by the culture and dislike the CCP.

Then there are Americans without any goal other than to make money who don't really care about the CCP, provided their business with China is left alone. They've probably cultivated business ties with Chinese counterparts and want to get a return on that investment.

There are many Chinese people who are fun to interact with when in China. It can be a great experience. There are also some not-so-nice Chinese, but those are a small group IME there.

Basically, there are all sorts of people in the world and each will decide their own reasons for visiting any specific location.

Dislike the CCP, but most Chinese people just want to be left alone and stay below any point where the CCP notices them.

Considering that private land ownership isn't allowed in China by anyone, the number is easy to calculate - ZERO, zilch, nada, 0.

The govt collective "owns" all land and effectively grants leases. Different types of land come with different "rights" ... which are subservient to whatever the CCP decides today. Make the wrong CCP member unhappy and any "rights" can be removed without due process.

In general, rural collectives own agricultural land and the state owns urban land.

However, this right has to comply with laws and social morality. It can harm neither public interests nor the legitimate rights and interests of others.

Which means that any polluting company is violating land laws, but as long as they have the support of the local CCP leaders, they are untouchable.
