Sorry Larr, but China spend a "declared" 1.75% GDP. They have forecast a 7.5% increase in their defense budget for next year. What they really spend is unknown. But safe to say they spend more as they are never honest about anything. Just not 7.5% GDP.

Considering that the majority of the Chinese public are much more hawkish than the government and will fully support a war with Japan, would be dumb to listen to China as war is inevitable when China have so much public demands for it.

This is my take on China. China wants to be a global superpower like the US and they are actively trying to do so and they’re not making a lot of friends in the process. I’m oversimplifying history but the US never really actively attempted to become a superpower. It happened by a series of unfortunate circumstances - WW2 - and the US made a heck of a lot of friends because of it. That’s the difference with China. They want respect and have done nothing to earn it.

"China" as in the Peopls Republic of China under the rule of the CCP has a short history of 74 years. During which time it has started wars with the Republic of China (now Taiwan), India, Vietnam. Even a border fight with the USSR. "China" today is a threat to the entre indo-pacific and possibly the whole world. I suggest you actually read China's history. China did not get so big by being peaceful. When China is strong, they have always expanded historically. China's diplomacy stance at their heights historically have always been subjugate or conquest, and have never allowed a non-tributary state to border it without going to war.

Question is how does Taiwan create an effective 'porcupine' strategy, serious deterrence to a Chinese invasion. Seems obvious they'll need plenty of outside help.

Only problem, global stakes are so high, over an island size of Kyushu with 0.3% of the world's population, that's old and shrinking just like Japan.

Keep in mind, only real reason issue's front and center is semiconductors, so it seems if Taiwanese policy-makers rapidly move to offshore all this semiconductor activity. There was relative peace in the Pacific until China started running around claiming everything as their own, threatening neighbors and encroaching on the sovereign territory of other Pacific nations.
