That's nice. Hope they take away that they should not start anything.

So they know how they'll get their asses kicked if they push too hard.

Good.

They won't need to f-around to find out. They already know.

Keep watching, kids. This is how the big boys do it.

Just like the US and Japanese aircraft monitor Chinese naval drills... Nothing new, same old daily anti China propaganda message dressed as news.

-11 ( +11 / -22 )

Navies monitor each other. When I was in the RN a Russian spy ship followed us everywhere.

21 ( +22 / -1 )

doesn't everyone monitor everyone? and always did......

more finger-pointing fear-mongering

Not exactly the same, as the allies dont go firing military grade lasers at the Chinese pilots trying to blind them, as China does to the allied planes.

I guess that makes it very easy to identify just which side is the hostile side. China is hostile to everyone, but when multiple nations are working together in greater numbers, China manages to maintain their manners. Funny how that works.

11 ( +20 / -9 )

kind of expected they would, more surprising would be if they didn't.

12 ( +12 / -0 )

Freedom of Navigation in the air !

-7 ( +3 / -10 )

Of course they did. Anyone who thought they wouldn’t is naive at best; dangerously obtuse at worse. Or a politician.

4 ( +7 / -3 )

they did exactly same things as yankees do here.

why to be "excited" about?

-5 ( +6 / -11 )

Yeah and likely way more reaction if China, Russia, and North Korea did so near the US or Canada.

-4 ( +3 / -7 )

Stop this war! people don't want a third word! to much spending on military drill ! make peace! Chinese are trying to study the intention of those countries who are doing those military drill , in order to be prepare if the situation escalate!

Reconnaissance, so what? Slow news on a rainy Monday in Tokyo in June. Plum rains have started.

Whatever both sides are doing, the U.S. is not going to fight China from across the Pacific. They’ll use South Korea and Japan like Ukraine and send you billions of war aid. Even if the USN sends its ships they are at a disadvantage because they’re going to be approaching a continent. I’d say the same if China sent ships to the U.S. left coast.

On paper, in theory, all of the 11 aircraft carriers that the United States fields (10 Nimitz and 1 Ford), could be destroyed by Chinese conventionally-armed DF-26 “carrier Killer” missiles. The flight times for the latest upgrades for the hyper-velocity versions of the DF-26 anticipated stopwatch from launch to destruction is within five minutes and within the 4000 km range. How are you to help Taiwan staying 4000 km away?

You, or for you American hillbillies, ya’ll, don’t realize that by 2019, China had 960 DF-21 missiles. Forget about the rest, just these are enough to wipe out the USN that tries to attack China.

China has not stopped building the DF-21, the YJ-21, or the DF-26. Can’t give you more details than this but it’s 2023 now. Why would you want to have your Navy face these missiles? How many missiles can the USN shoot down before more are unleashed? I asked this before but Desert Tortoise’s answer was unconvincing.

The Chinese “just ran rings around us,” said former Joint Chiefs Vice Chair Gen. John Hyten in one after-action report

. “They knew exactly what we were going to do before we did it.”

Dozens of versions of the above war-game scenario have been enacted over the last few years, most recently

in April by the House Select Committee on competition with China. And while the ultimate outcome in these exercises is not always clear — the U.S. does better in some than others — the cost is. In every exercise the U.S. uses up all its long-range air-to-surface missiles in a few days, with a substantial portion of its planes destroyed on the ground. In every exercise the U.S. is not engaged in an abstract push-button war from 30,000 feet up like the ones Americans have come to expect since the end of the Cold War, but a horrifically bloody one.

And that’s assuming the U.S.-China war doesn’t go nuclear.

“The thing we see across all the wargames is that there are major losses on all sides. And the impact of that on our society is quite devastating,” said Becca Wasser, who played the role of the Chinese leadership in the Select Committee’s wargame and is head of the gaming lab at the Center for a New American Security.

“The most common thread in these exercises is that the United States needs to take steps now in the Indo-Pacific to ensure the conflict doesn’t happen in the future.

We are hugely behind the curve. Ukraine is our wakeup call. This is our watershed moment.”

I don’t see Taiwan as Ukraine in a conflict between the U.S. and China. You heard it here, China will actually minimize damage to protect Taiwan but wreak havoc on Japan and the US bases in the Pacific. It’ll help Ryukyu regain its sovereignty. Japan would be Ukraine imo and not Taiwan.

Doh! They do this to each other all the time, being doing for decades. Is this a no news day, lol

-4 ( +2 / -6 )

These pre announced joint drills is a bit of a flex, so not so much surprise china was "monitoring" it.

-2 ( +2 / -4 )

Very interesting scenarios going on here today…let’s hope none of this comes to pass.

@Eastmann Whats with the Yankees that's a baseball team. This is not a game! (SH)

they did exactly same things as yankees do here.

why to be "excited" about?

2 ( +2 / -0 )

Hardly news. Standard practice for any military.

5 ( +5 / -0 )

Now if the Chinese had not observed these naval drills, that might be newsworthy.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

A wise person told me once, the only time you look at your neighbors' plate is to check if they have enough. CCP gonna give us some carriers ? YEAH!!

Always a good anti Chinese headline to keep readers interested. Such an obvious thing to report. Do you not think the Chinese will spy on these exercises? It goes without saying

1 ( +3 / -2 )

@quercetum: all of the downvotes show how naive people are. China will move to take Taiwan and the US may or may not respond. It’s a coin flip. Will a shooting war over Taiwan be worth it to the US at that time to whomever is president?

Plenty of computer chip fab plants outside Taiwan will be operational, so I doubt the US will respond militarily. A strongly worded statement, don’t upset the economic apple cart, sacrifice the pawn, keep those iPhones, shoes, clothes and essential strategic minerals coming.

They’ll remember that the US couldn’t defeat people in sandals and grass hats, and they’re now trading partners. The US doesn’t care enough about Taiwan to have massive casualties and no phones or kitchens full of plastic crap.

0 ( +3 / -3 )

Nothing to see here. Gathering intelligence is smart and expected. This headline isn't Anti-Chinese nor Anti-American ... unless your world view are one of those.

If Taiwan fights against China, then the US will definitely provide support. If China uses nasty methods, I expect the QUAD countries will all join and the war will become regional with China having bit off more they they should. Unlike Ukraine, the mainland will be attacked, taking out manufacturing for all "dual use" products along with strictly military targets, including transportation and pipelines. Chinese container ships will be seized around the world, so only stuff coming by trucks from NK and Russia will feed and provide energy to China. It will devastate the economy. They will truly become a developing nation again.

China often misreads responses.

Then it will be up to China to decide if they want to use nukes or just step back and say they are sorry. If nukes become involved, I'm happy to be living near to a prime target that would likely be taken in the first volley. Good luck to the people left behind.

Taiwan will be gone. Everyone who can leave will be airlifted out, similar to Berlin airlift as the USSR was trying to take eastern Europe with a wall. I can see Taiwan manufacturing being destroyed on their way out to prevent China from using those factories or gleaming any proprietary tricks from what's left behind.

The US will not invade China. I can't imagine any country invading mainland China. They will send kinetic messages from offshore or over the horizon, however. Hopefully, the CCP understands the messages before it comes to this.

This is hardly news. Every carrier strike group that ever deployed during the Cold War was shadowed by Soviet TU-95 Bears, Il-38 Mays and possibly a "fishing trawler" that never put a net into the water and had a lot of funny antennas on its masts.

5 ( +5 / -0 )

Everything the Chinese do is monitored by the US. The media will have to try harder than that to nudge us all closer to WWIII.

As the Japanese people are bring asked to turn down their air con and poach in their apartments, they should be entitled to know what the environmental impact is from all of this wargaming.

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

Of course China monitored it. China is partners with North Korea, Russia and Iran. They’re like a criminal gang.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

@stormcrow: If China, Russia....were criminal gang, than how can you explain the deeds of the following people: Bush jr., Cheney, Wolfowitz, Rumsfeld, Blair, Obama and Biden.....?

These are warcriminals of Afghanistan,Iraq,Syria, Libya and the coup of Ukraine (2014)!

Still Putin's War

The question is: how many of its cities is China prepared to lose to gain a lifeless rock?

All of which will do nothing to gain China Taiwan as every strike against the US pushes us further up the escalation ladder. Don't forget: the Quad has subs that will not need any standoff distance. Better let your fantasies go now.

elephant200 Today 02:21 pm JST @stormcrow: If China, Russia....were criminal gang, than how can you explain the deeds of the following ...

I wouldn't call them a criminal gang. I'd call them countries with criminal intent and criminal actions (Russia, China, NK, Iran).

Syria is lead by a man who used chemical weapons on his own non-fighting, people. He should have called for elections when the Arab Spring happened so leadership of the country could be decided. Instead he choose to use violence and escalated that violence.

But all of this is OT. Chinese can watch whatever is happening in international waters or international airspace. I think it is good for both China and the US/France/Canadian/Japanese exercises to be monitored. It makes each side think carefully about taking any aggressive actions.

If only Russia would have paid attention closer. Ukraine would have been very different today, without war.
