Should his mental state make that much difference to his sentence? Whatever his mental state was it resulted in four senseless innocent deaths. He should be imprisoned for a very long at the least.

There are plenty of things that can be destructively addictive, with different levels of severity. Drugs, alcohol, tobacco, sweets, computer games, gambling, etc. Whatever the underlying cause, in the end the decision to partake or not, to seek help or not, is ours. We should choose wisely.

Posted in: Japan sushi chain drops suit against teen over licking soy bottle See in context

Good decision. Demanding 67 million yen from a teenager was extremely heavy handed. Although i suspect they never intended to follow through with the demand but rather used it to send a warning message to other would be 'sushi terrorists'.

Nevertheless I hope the boy has learned his lesson.

It will be interesting to watch this drama play out.

Will Biden and his camp succeed in taking out the only person who can get in their way at next year's election?

Or will Trump supporters, and even swing voters, get so fired up over these legal maneuvers on Trump that they come out in droves to vote Him in?

We shall see.

I'd hate to be one of the ones to decide policy on such penalties.

Take the lenient approach and many will die of addiction

Take the present hardline approach and some will die from punishment that doesn't fit the crime or even innocently die.

Why get so upset about desecration of any holy book (or flag)? The Bible is very important to me but if anyone wants to burn it then I'm not gonna protest and chant condemnation over it. And besides, getting upset and demonstrating vehemently over it is not going to attract anyone to it anyway.

Be fruitful and multiply is not just just a Biblical suggestion, it's a commandment for a reason. Any society failing to do that, for whatever reason, is doomed to self destruction. Sad, because on the whole Japan is such a wonderful country.

Australia doesn’t like speech that half of their own citizens would make on Twitter?!

This potential punishment of Twitter echoes the restrictions they put on their own citizens regarding Covid. Is Australia a free democracy or not? If it is, it should allow it’s own citizens to say what is on their mind whatever it is, whether it be on Twitter or any where else. How sad the decline of freedom in what was once a great country.

Leave Twitter alone Australia.

Follow the money to understand what is truly going on. Private equity investment monoliths like Blackrock and Vanguard are pressuring big corporates to promote PRIDE, DEI and ESG initiatives or risk divestment. Buckling under the pressure results on irate consumer bases, billions in lost revenue and stock price plunges.

Shove wokeness into your conservative customer base's faces and this is what happens.

Posted in: Italy's Meloni rejects criticism from Canada's Trudeau over LGBTQ+ rights at G7 Summit See in context

Italy’s far-right Premier Giorgia Meloni on Sunday rejected criticism from her Canadian counterpart at the G7 Summit about her government’s stance on LGBTQ+ rights.

I beleive that the description of Premier Meloni as 'far-right' in this article is biased and misleading. Her policies are mainstream for very large portions of Western nations and the rest of the world. Wheras, her critic in this article, Mr. Trudeau, is considered by many in the West and the rest of the world to be far-left, or at best left of centre. He is entitled to question her for her policies and she is just as entitled to question him for his policies. That is democracy and equality.

@smithinjapan

Like whom? And what rights abuses?

How about those who simply wanted to work to support thier families bit couldn't during harsh Covid restrictions?

How about those forced to get vaccinations against their will?

How about those who were arrested for exercising their freedom of speech in protesting the restrictions?

How about those prosecuted for 'misgendering' someone?

Etc.

Canada along with Australia and many other Western nations are losing the plot. Good people like Meloni are beginning to stand up for the common people against this bullying and insanity.

Maybe Ms. Meloni should have raised a few of her own concerns about Canada's discraceful human rights abuses against those who refuse to be bullied by Trudeau?

I agree that the LGBTQ community should never face mistreatment of any kind. i also think they have the same legal rights as the rest of us.

They can legally marry a person of the opposite sex like the rest of us. If they don't want to they don't have to....like the rest of us.

On the surface it seems just stupid to perpetrate such a crime for which nowadays you'll surely be caught, imprisoned and your life be ruined.

Could it be that most perpetrators are just so financially desperate that the risk is worth it? Owe money to the yakuza maybe?
