Certainly not declining here in Kyushu.

To be successful, schemes like Premium Friday require monumental shifts in Japanese culture and thinking; shifts which need to happen from elementary school up.

But these changes will never happen here due to Japan still very much being a feudalistic gerontocracy.

Oh, really. Then It should be no problem at all for anyone who speaks decent English to get any English teaching job at any Japanese university or private high school, right?

It’s so easy to get hired. I know a guy whose job title is Professor of English at a national university. It’s a total joke. Nothing “professor” about him. They just gave him that title because he’s been there longer than other fresh off the boat “teachers”.

It might be when someone gets a hold of your personal information and uses it to obtain a credit card and runs up a lot of debt or perpetrates some other form of ID theft.

More scaremongering. Would never happen. They wouldn't have my inkan for one thing. They also wouldn't know where I work; both necessary for getting a new credit card.

See, this is why you can't have nice things from the government in Japan, widespread fraud and tax evasion as an everyday thing. My Number shouldn't be postponed just because too many Japanese and gaijin like their fraud and evasion and kid themselves it's right because it's 'chotto'.

Spot on. 99% of the Japanese people who don't want MyNumber are just petrified of anything "new" in their lives. One reason why the country is still stuck in the 1970s.

Except when you are one of those few thousand and you have lost money

Nobody lost money. A MyNumber card isn't an ATM card.

If you stole my MyNumber card right now and even if you rightly guessed my PIN, you would at best be able to get a some forms from the convenience store machine such as a 住民票. So you would know my address. Oh no, it's the end of the world!

Stop scaremongering.

In the US, Toyota workers make more on average than GM workers.

Not being outsourced three times over probably has something to do with it! It's insane the amount and levels of outsourcing in Japan; a true cancer on society here.

I personally think the MyNumber system is great. I want just one card for everything. I hope they incorporate the drivers license into it as well. There have been, what, a few thousand data breaches amongst the tens of millions of cards issued? It’s no big deal.

Posted in: Japanese high school kids average 12% correct answers in English oral test See in context

Many years ago when I was an ALT, I got scolded for teaching the elementary kids "I like dogs", and "I like cats". The flashcards I was using showed only one dog and one cat, and the classroom teacher (zero English ability) said that I need to stick to "I like dog" and "I like cat". I told them that "I like dog" sounds like you enjoy eating dogs, but they didn't care. I quit the job shorty after, as I refused to have any part in teaching kids incorrect English.

It's so stupid forcing kids to learn English here. The vast majority will never need it in their lives. The vast majority also have zero interest in leaving Japan or in anything non-Japanese. Make it an optional subject. Also, the decades of JET and ALT "teachers" have clearly made no difference to the outcome.
