Just another token move by the LDP. Always the same, visit Fukushima for a photo op, meet with the families of the abducted and make a comment about how they are continuing their search. Like a bad TV rerun.

Asinine. It's not even the national flag. If the host country is offended, offer the courtesy to respect their wishes.

Posted in: Kishida faces dilemma at G7 as he balances anti-nuclear goals with reality of threats See in context

For Kishida it was all about the photo op and the image. He was the foreign minister for many years and knows how to act on the world stage, but it doesn't mean there's any substance. They didn't move any closer to nuclear disarmament and they certainly didn't move any closer to peace. This very expensive members only club managed to move opposing camps in the opposite direction. No news about climate change, only Hiroshima, nukes and Ukraine. Kishida brought the circus to Hiroshima and the festival is now over and locals are hoping this will bring more tourists. Good job.

For me, one video clip on NHK summed up the Hiroshima G7: Biden walking to one of the venues with the football in tow. None of the announcers mentioned it and the irony was lost in the moment.

This is a good first step. Now Japan offer to stop going to Yasukuni and you'll be surprised how far that next step will go.

Dang man, you can't even convince your own people. One way Nishimura can convince them is to dump it in Tokyo Bay and have the residents accept it.

Posted in: 80% in Japan oppose tax hike plan to cover defense outlay: poll See in context

Yes, yes, yes. The poll shows this but the only poll that counts is the one that the LDP cares about and which the population kindly obliges. You vote LDP, you get LDP, and this poll means nothing to those in power.

Exactly. Nice first move Kishida, now get the rest of your LDP cronies in line and stop going to Yasukuni and put some teeth into the anti-hate speech act.

@Kumagaijin, understand your frustration, try checking if there are any TNR groups in your area. There are many volunteers where we live and they look after the stray/feral population and actively try to get the cats spayed or neutered. in addition to preventing further births, it reduces the fighting that you hear at night. There has been a significant drop in the number of strays and ferals, not only in our area but in other parts where I go jogging.

Posted in: Kishida seeks closer ties with Africa in bid to woo 'Global South' See in context

Why does Kishida think that Japan can act as an intermidiary between African countries and the G7? G7 countries already have relations with African nations. BTW, howz your GW world tour Kishida? Enjoying the food and drinks? With all the money spent on your tour, surely you have something concrete to bring home as omiyage...

Posted in: U.N. expert urges Japan to sanction Myanmar junta See in context

There are and have been officers being educated at Japan's Defense Academy since 2015. The "grunts" receive their orders from the officers; so who's complicit in the repression in Myanmar? Someone should ask the globe trotting peace and Quad salesman, Kishida about this in a press conference.

Kishida buys all kinds of war toyz but in reality Japan is a paper tiger. It lacks the commitment to "execute" because there's a bureaucratic mentality that is pervasive at all levels in the government.

Posted in: Japan's dairy industry in crisis See in context

This article failed to mention JA's role in the industry. Back in 2006 there was an embezzlement and corruption scandal involving JA and several LDP members, can't remember what reforms were made, if any, but knowing Japan if there were any reforms it was probably only window dressing. Who sets the selling price for the dairy farmers, the farmers or JA? JA of course needs to line their pockets and the pockets of corrupt politicians so I imagine their buying price is cheap.

Posted in: Suspected gunpowder found at home of Kishida blast suspect: media See in context

What was his motive? Last report was that he wasn't speaking until he got his lawyer. If it's more dissatisfaction with Kishida or the LDP like in Abe's case then it could prove to be embarrasing before the election and G7. My bet is that they'll smother this until after the election.
