While it has the tradition and it looks good to the eye, in my opinion grass is by far the worst surface and should be gradually phased out from modern tennis competitions. Not only for the irregular bounces, weird ball skids, and high sensitivity to humidity, but because it is so slippery that many players end up injured. I'm sure an artificial material that looks and plays similarly, but it is more reliable and safe (and easier/cheaper to maintain) can be developed. I know it is an unpopular opinion, but the number of grass courts and tournaments is shrinking, echoing the sentiment throughout the community.

Gauff was actually good, but Kenin proved better on the day. Maybe she was hungrier?

@timeon, have you ever played on grass? Years ago I installed a grass court on my property and it was truly the envy of not only my neighbours but the tennis community, here in Victoria BC. You're absolutely wrong when you say the sentiment for grass courts throughout the tennis community is shrinking. It's a different surface, yes, but a well-prepared court surface is certainly not full of irregular bounces. And 'weird ball skids' are the result of the spin put on the ball by the racquet.
So far, Wimbledon's been great to watch.
