If the EU really wants to stop the Russians it must cease buying oil and especially gas from Russia. Cut off that revenue stream as soon as possible. Everything else is just noise.

And get those MIGs in Poland into Ukraine. Screw the two at that US base in Germany. They're parts material.

The US has not been able to break Cuba in 60 years of criminal sanctions, much less can do it with Russia, which is a world power, full of resources and is an immense subcontinent..

Lol !!..

The EU is hooked on Russian fossil fuels, the Euros, billions fund Russia war machine.

And could ultimately fund/purchase Chinese military hardware.

The hypocrisy is breathtaking .

Time and again the EU commission bowed to German insistence that the block energy policy/security would would not be at risk or result in Russian extortion.

Ukraine is pay in body bags for such reckless naivety.

TokyoLiving, the only people the sanctions are trying to influence are the oligarchs. They've had their yachts and overseas properties seized, they can no longer travel abroad, and now luxuries are becoming unavailable even within Russia. Sooner or later, they'll turn against Putin, and then he's toast.

The strong sanctions imposed so far are punishing Russians, but they are not stopping the advance of Russian forces on the ground inside Ukraine. I've no idea of the scale of covert military assistance from America or whether it is enough to tip the scales against the Russian military behemoth, but I'm beginning to break out in a cold sweat at the queasy thought that "safe-hands" Biden might have given the mild Merrick Garland the job of quietly running this operation as well.

I don't know, I am not convinced. When have economic sanctions already been effective in history? North Korea, Iran, ...?

By the fact that we are on the 4th round of sanctions means the first 3 rounds were useless and ineffective.

This is why it doesn’t work:

Biden said he delayed the announcement of the U.S. ban until he had assured European leaders that they wouldn't be expected to take the same step.

“It took a long time sitting with my counterparts and saying, ‘Look, we’re going to block oil, but I’m not going to ask you to do it,’ ” Biden said.

More to come. Stay tuned.

As Putin sips his vodka in his huge mansion snacking on caviar reading Mein Kampf by the fireplace, what’s he thinking? Maybe . . . “Bring on the sanctions! Russia can take it!”

Eppee, neither North Korea nor Iran have oligarchs. Also, both are religiously fanatic states (the former towards their Great Leader).

The US has a lot of old MiG-29s in the boneyard. The Navy operated a handful of former East German ones as aggressor aircraft for a time with Top Gun but couldn't keep them airworthy for a reasonable amount of money The Russian engines time between overhaul was 400 hours but 75% of the engines failed before that (western engines TBO is around 1500 hours and they seldom fail). Airframe life was rated at a mere 1100 hours compared to 6000 hours for F/A-18s, extended to 10,000 hours during overhaul. After upteen studies by the US Navy and the Germans who also operated the type, it was determined there was no economical way to increase airframe life or install a more durable GE or Westinghouse jet engine so they were retired as they hit their airframe limit. Later on the US bought 30-something more from Croatia to prevent them from being sold to Iran but those went right into storage.

The US has not been able to break Cuba in 60 years of criminal sanctions, much less can do it with Russia,

Here is the difference you are missing. Wrt Cuba, only the US has any kind of embargo against them. The entire rest of the world conducts normal commerce and diplomacy with Cuba. Cuba is a member of SWIFT so it can trade in the US Dollar or any other currency. There is no restriction. There are big Cuban beach resorts filled with European tourists, resorts owned by Spanish and other European hoteliers. If I wasn't a US citizen I could book a trip to Cuba with my motorcycle and take a guided motorcycle tour of Cuba hosted by a German tour company. Almost makes me wish I was a Canadian. There are direct flights to Cuba from Canada and Mexico, but that Cuban stamp in my passport would get me sent to jail. Cuban companies are free to buy whatever they can afford from any other nation in the world except the US. They are still a mess so it has nothing to do with US sanctions. Their economic model and governance are hosed and they don't have a heck of a lot to export to earn money with.

Wrt Russia, They are cut off from SWIFT, the US Dollar and thus cannot trade with much of the world. Their funds are frozen too. Plus it is not just the US imposing sanctions but almost every elected democracy is doing it together in a coordinated fashion. A completely different scenario than that which faces Cuba.

By the fact that we are on the 4th round of sanctions means the first 3 rounds were useless and ineffective.

Not very sound logic there.

It's a bit like saying "painting a second coat means that the first coat was useless and ineffective".

Stop playing with sanctions.

Let's just get serious and give NATO the green light to attack Russia.

Painkiller - I don't think we are there yet, as sad as that may be for Ukraine. I hope that this never has to happen.
