Hey haters, millions of people are watching them even if you aren't.

Hey haters, millions of people are watching them even if you aren't.

Yep.

I was told by sulking teenagers that nobody is interested in the women’s World Cup.

It’s almost like they’ve been completely misinformed.

Cruel.

2 ( +11 / -9 )

Wow, that's great ratings for game one!

Especially considering so many new faces against a poor opponent.

It'll lead to bigger and bigger ratings, the further they go.

Men's World Cup gets 100s of millions, and over a billion for the finals. So, figuratively speaking, 6 million can be described as nobody in that context. I am glad when people can make money doing what they love, but there is simply no reason that women soccer players' pay should be compared to men's soccer. Nothing to do with hate - just simple economics.

Women's soccer undoubtedly is growing in popularity but yeah.....6mil viewers worldwide isn't impressive at all. It's rather disappointing. And saying that it was the most watched soccer event in the US after the men's WC final, isn't saying that much considering the low popularity of soccer in the US.

If it was actually worldwide, you would be correct. Fox Sports and Telemundo are US broadcast/cable networks for US-based viewers. (Or those connecting via US VPN servers.)

The US men's team does not get 100's of millions for a stage match. So, figuratively speaking, you are comparing apples to oranges.

Your comparisons are very flawed and misleading here. You are not comparing like with like.

The last women’s World Cup had overall viewing figures of over a billion worldwide.

That looks like it could be broken this time around.

Again, who has been telling sulking teenagers that nobody watches the women’s World Cup?

Whoever it is should knock it off. These people actually believe it.

Telemundo also broadcasts in Mexico and possibly Puerto Rico.

Even if 6mil is only in the states, it's not that great. For comparison, the Superbowl averages over 100mil. Games of Thrones averaged over 30mil/episode. 6mil viewers is less than 2% of the US population.

-12 ( +3 / -15 )

I would have watched the game but thought it was on Utube.

Now I know that it is on Telemundo too as I do not have cable and will watch future games.

@MilesTag, Telemundo is also in USA and you do not have to have cable.

Watch for free like I do over antenna.

A. Puerto Rico is part of the US. And, B, I doubt Mexicans would be very interest in a US Men's Team stage match, either.

You're comparing apples to cupcakes. The only legitimate comparison would be between this match's viewership in these specific markets to an equivalent US Men's Team match in the same markets. That is the only valid comparison.

Obviously any soccer game's viewership in the US, regardless of men's or women's, is going to pale in comparison to the Superbowl. It's soccer. In the US. It doesn't take a rocket surgeon to figure that one out.

Meanwhile, in Japan I watched that game and also Japan VS Zambia live on the dark net, since no free to air channels here bothered carrying it. Was available on BS, but who has that? Come on Japan, give the Nadeshiko some love!

Saturday afternoon's match in Auckland, New Zealand — which kicked off at 9 p.m. EDT Friday night — averaged 5,261,000 viewers on Fox, making it the second-most watched group stage telecast since Fox started covering it in 2015.

Fox watchers love watching the US women's national team

So…let’s compare like with like then.

USMNT averaged 11.71 million views during the last WC. Over 12 million in the US V Iran match.

Those figures also do NOT include telemundo, as the above USWNT numbers do.

So what’s the complaint now? The USMNT is of course thoroughly average to below average in the men’s arena and the USWNT are world beaters and easily one of the strongest teams consistently of the last decade…and the men’s team still nearly doubles the viewership.

Looking for truth and asking questions in politically driven debates, however nonsensical, seems to be the last thing a “sulking teenager” would do. In fact, I submit that the sulking teenager behavior seems to be coming from the one who can’t help but lob pejoratives and anyone deigning to question their reasoning.

Perhaps become less personally attached to causes that are so open to personal interpretation and you wouldn’t feel the need to try and feebly fling insults over such petty discussions?

You're comparing apples to cupcakes. The only legitimate comparison would be between this match's viewership in these specific markets to an equivalent US Men's Team match in the same markets. That is the only valid comparison.

Comparing soccer to American football is comparing apples to oranges? Seriously? You mean soccer isn't a sport? So you can't compare MLB, NFL, NHL, NBA or their playoffs/championships because that's also comparing apples to oranges.

Or is it because comparing women's sports to men's sports is apples to oranges? So one can only compare the same sport across gender? The average viewers for the men's world cup in the US was 12mil. That's the average and it's double. The women's first match brought in only 6mil. I doubt they'll even average 4mil.

You're only claiming that it's apples to oranges because one is very popular and the other isn't. I don't think you understand the concept of apples to oranges.

Comparing Game of Thrones to the women's world cup is apples and oranges. I used that to show just how low 6mil is.

Regardless, the fact is that less than 2% of the US population watched the women's world cup soccer match.

21mil people watched the men's world cup match between Mexico and Argentina. Soccer is the most popular sport in Mexico. If even half watched the US team's match, that's over 10mil. For a country that's obsessed with soccer, that isn't a reach.

-5 ( +1 / -6 )

The women's game is a lot more mainstream, in you face, not a sport soccer moms take/drop there off daughters too.

-4 ( +0 / -4 )

The United States’ 3-0 victory over Vietnam in the Women's World Cup drew 6.26 million viewers, making it the most-watched soccer telecast in the U.S. since last year’s men’s World Cup final.

Do the math.

This match had 6.26 million viewers.

The men's World Cup final last year had 1.5 BILLION viewers.

And besides, why wouldn't this match be the most-watched soccer match since the men's WC final last year? What matches have happened in between that would even involve anything resembling a worldwide audience?

The "coverage" of this women's World Cup is undeniably a concerted media effort to push and promote a sporting event far beyond its actual popularity and the actual demand for it.

For purposes of wokeness, of course.

-9 ( +2 / -11 )

I was told by sulking teenagers that nobody is interested in the women’s World Cup.

Relatively speaking, relative to men's soccer and other men's sporting events, what you were told by those sulking teenagers is actually true.

The article tells you that 6.26 million people watched the US-Vietnam women's match. Sounds like a lot, but it's really not.

The article also tells you that this is the biggest TV audience for a soccer game since last year's men's World Cup final -- but the article does NOT tell you that over 1.5 BILLION people watched that match.

6.26 million (reported) vs. 1.5 billion (covered up and not reported).

Do the math, and you can only conclude one thing: the media are trying to "sell" people on the idea that women's soccer is more popular than it really is.

They're supposed to be objective journalists, but they really come across as more like women' soccer PR reps.

-8 ( +2 / -10 )

This match had 6.26 million viewers.

For a group game in one country - The US.

The men's World Cup final last year had 1.5 BILLION viewers.

WORLDWIDE.

Comparing apples and oranges to suit your agenda just makes you look negative and very petty. And, of course, anti-womens sport.

5 ( +7 / -2 )

The men's World Cup final last year had 1.5 BILLION viewers.

Dishonest comparison. Pretty shabby way to make an argument.

This is as bad as it gets in terms of good faith, serious and worthwhile arguments.

It has absolutely zero redeeming features.

This is a nadir and I’ve seen links to infowars, Alex Berenson and Fox News.

Then why don’t you respond to the statistics that disprove your arguments instead of cherry picking ones that you think paint those who disagree as some sort of conspiracy theorists? Talk about disingenuous and worthless arguments.

The thoroughly lackluster USMNT averaged nearly double the views as the consistently world beating USWNT, on just one platform.

-3 ( +2 / -5 )

Look, a ratings war!

-2 ( +1 / -3 )

@MilesTeg

Get off your donkey.

This argument of 'only' 6 million is silly. The men's team was maybe just above that total, but pretty even for game one their past World Cup. It's a nice total for the first game in this WWC.

2 ( +3 / -1 )

It'll lead to bigger and bigger ratings, the further they go.

Unlikely given the time slot of some of the matches.

-3 ( +1 / -4 )

It's bigger than the US men's ratings

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

lostrune2=It's bigger than the US men's ratings

Yeah. Except that it’s not. Except that it’s only about half of the men’s ratings.

This was discussed like…all of two posts up. With statistics and ratings proving this. Yet this myth continues that the rating are higher or “about the same” as the men’s.

Who knew people could get so excited about how many other people watched a game on TV?
