Posted in: Man arrested for stealing two Rolex watches from Kawasaki store See in context

I regret buying my Rolex. Don’t get me wrong, great time pieces and surely an investment. But I don’t feel comfortable wearing it on my wrist because it was so expensive. Just gathering dust in a drawer. My wife, as a joke for Christmas, bought me a high quality Chinese replica Rolex that looks and works the same for $200. You’d never really know the difference unless you took it apart to look at the mechanisms. Keeps time just fine.

Big big difference between a gender neutral bathroom and making a childish fuss over a trans woman using the girl’s room people.

Are they sure long covid isn’t just in the minds of hypochondriacs that manifest into physical ailments? Statistically the numbers would add up to the percentage of hypochondriacs with severe anxiety issues in any given society. The mind is a powerful thing.

There are a bunch of similar places in Ginza and Roppongi… they usually all take Japanese insurance but there’s really no point in going out of your way to these places because they offer the same basic services as any local clinic near your home and anything fancy or serious needs to be paid out of pocket, same as normal clinics. I guess the biggest draw is a lot these people will take international insurance.

@Roy

A marriage in Japan between two foreigners is legally binding. My wife and I did that. You have to both have legal residence status first and there is a marriage certificate and the marriage is reflected in the family Juminhyou. Koseki is irrelevant if both parties are foreign as we don’t have one. But no, two foreigners on vacation in Japan can’t get legally married.

And a lot of these people are living in houses with multiple rooms while the elderly in Japan are living in 1k apartments with AC they don’t use and die of heatstroke because they can’t afford the electricity bills with their measly pensions.

Posted in: Letters from Japan: Dating app issues See in context

Dating apps in Japan are great if you’re not looking to connect with a Japanese girl. Didn’t have a lot to do during the pandemic and had really bad experiences chatting/ meeting a few Japanese girls. Then I was like screw it, seems to be more foreign girls on these apps in Japan anyway so thought there would be a better chance of meeting a “normal” girl. Happily married. And as terrible as it sounds, living in Japan, I am so much happier not having to speak or deal with Japanese anything when I go home at night. Totally relaxing.

So this dashes my hopes of seeing Oppenheimer in theaters here. I guess I’ll see it next month in Taiwan then. From what I’ve read the movie addresses why they thought the bomb was necessary, without need to show its horrific destruction. I’d love to see a Japanese movie that explains why the Americans used it without playing the victim card. Tokyo fire bombings killed more than Hiroshima and Nagasaki combined but nobody in this country talks about because they probably feel it was justified.

It would be very stupid to sell yen now. If you’re living in Japan and have US dollars it would be smarter to sell 10,000 USD because you’ll get a little more than 1.4M JPY at the current rate. You’d get a bad deal selling yen now.

Posted in: 6-year-old boy wakes up to find his parents dead in the house See in context

I don’t think a lot of posters understand what protective custody means… social services will keep him temporarily in a children’s home until the next of kin is tracked down and agrees to formally adopt. They will go down the family tree to even the most distant relatives. If no relatives are found or willing, then the child will be formally placed in a children’s home and most likely live until he reaches 18. Adoption is low in japan and adoption of kids over the age of 3 is very uncommon. Sad but true.

So they’re just reimplementing the scheme from the 90’s that brought in hostesses and dancers from across Southeast Asia? Cool. Met many nice Filipino ladies here in their 50’s or older who came over in the 90’s on entertainer visas and eventually married the Japanese club owner, got PR and then divorced.

Wasn’t the brother in Nikko this past November doing publicity for the book? I think the family and French authorities have lost any credibility they once had in criticizing their Japanese counterparts on this one. Sorry, the Lucy Blackman family was more shameless but at least they got closure and justice (somewhat) for their daughter.

DeSantis is too educated to appeal to the Trump base. He plays dumb badly and I doubt he actually believes any of the bs that comes out of his mouth. Trump on the other hand seems to truly believe in his delusions. But Trump was never a governor and didn’t pick an unprovoked fight with his state’s largest employer - Micky Mouse!

The American passport wasn’t mentioned because it was knocked out of the top ten for visa free travel. Not that most people would want to visit any of the places that Americans are not allowed to visit visa free.

Powerful is a very subjective word. The Japanese can still travel visa free to a few more countries than the Americans can. Not sure they are places any normal person would want to visit though. But again, in my experience American passport holders are treated much more kindly than their Japanese counterparts while traveling abroad.

The BBC has released a series of damning investigative stories on Japan this year. This article fails to mention that the group filming these Chikan acts and uploading them online - the group the BBC was able to infiltrate - were Chinese, not Japanese.

And just the other day there was a not so flattering story about the deceased Sri Lankan girl and Japan’s treatment of asylum seekers.

Nothing new to anyone living here but apparently it’s only embarrassing to Japan if a respected international outlet reports on something that Japanese journalists have been doing forever.
