I'm really surprised by all the racist comments about Chinese. We had lots of Chinese tourists here in Shinjuku, and I never saw a problem. They are nice and well behaved. I've given occasional guidance to Chinese who were lost or trying to figure out the train system. They were very nice!

Posted in: Nagasaki urges break from nuclear deterrence at reduced A-bomb anniversary See in context

A nuclear war will be the end of the human species. It is not a good way to say it, but the nuclear bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki are like little firecrackers compared to modern nuclear bombs. Scientists have calculated that bombs dropped on 10 large cities will create enough smoke to pollute the air making it unbreathable, and we'll all die. Remember that the atmosphere around the earth is actually very thin.

If he is gay, he can be married in Tokyo, which has same-sex marriage certificates. But is he really gay? Incidentally, gokai is totally gay. I think I would have heard something.

Posted in: Japanese pop star Shinjiro Atae says he's gay See in context

The negative view of gays here in Japan didn't used to exist before western influence came ashore. There are old Tokugawa sex manuals illustrating heterosexual sex in great detail with ukio-e (浮世絵) woodblock prints, but there is always a last chapter on how two men or two women can have sex. No moral judgment. These chapters were deleted in modern editions. However, recently, I found a publication that included the gay sex chapters. Western influence has been good in some way, bad in others.

@didou What do you mean. I live just to the right of that picture. Almost everything I need is within a 5 or 6 minute walk. So convenient! And the subway is just around the corner, so I can get anywhere.

I bought my place here in Shinjuku 20 years ago (it is just a little to the right of the picture). The building was new at the time, and now I could sell it for more than I paid. That would have been unthinkable 20 years ago. Selling an old place for more than when it was new was seen as a rip-off or scam. But not now. And no, I'm never going to sell.

@Moonraker I still just go to a travel agent, tell them what I want, and let them do all the work. Of course, there is a small fee for their work, but it is worth it. Maybe I'm old fashioned, but I don't go that online.

Posted in: Japan's top court says gov't restrictions on transgender employee's use of restrooms illegal See in context

I worry about trans women using the women's restroom. Your biological sex, your sexual identity, and your gender identity are different. You can be born a biological male, identify as a female (transgen), and be heterosexual, meaning you are attracted to women. So a trans-female can be attracted to women. Not good news in a woman's restroom, public bath (sento), or changing room at a swimming pool. Oh, and PS: I'm totally gay.

People are complaining because Kabuki is all male. Well, Takarazuka Review (宝塚歌劇団) is all female. Should that be ended to? Also remember that, for example, in Shakespeare's time, all cast members were played by males, and female characters were played by boys.

Maybe there is hope! My partner and I have been together since junior high in the early 90s. Maybe we'll get married someday. Conservatives say that in the constitution, "both sexes" (両性) means male and female, but both sexes involved could also be the sexes of both partners: male and female, male and male, or female and female.
