I think we are on TEPCO! Disgusting.

8 ( +15 / -7 )

Just in time for the a/c season.

Price gouging at its best.

7 ( +17 / -10 )

Huge hikes, To me seems like greed and nothing to do with blah blah.

greed goes around , I put up my tenants rent up back home 15%. I had to I’m getting ripped off everyway I turn recently. I joined the greed club!

No point in having got solar with subsidies stuck at 19yen per kWh excess sold back to the grid. So will those subsidies increase? You know the answer! So people thinking of getting solar: don't. It's even more of a scam now.

10 ( +17 / -7 )

This will only domino onto further hikes in the cost of living/ consumer prices due to the increase in manufacturing costs.

8 ( +11 / -3 )

Be glad you're not paying Okinawa power rates, said to be the highest in Japan.

7 ( +11 / -4 )

Japan's government has approved an increase in household electricity rates by seven major utilities after delays in examining their requests as the government sought to address record high inflation.

Haven't we been hearing for the last 6 months at least that the government was giving subsidies to power companies ' to offset the effects of the Ukraine invasion and inflation on energy prices'?

Bypassing the consumer mostly of course and only the government and power companies word that steadily rising energy prices were being kept in check by the government subsidies to them.

https://japannews.yomiuri.co.jp/politics/politics-government/20221026-67010/

And lo and behold, just in time for a scorching summer, prices go up.

Pandemic relief, inflation and war; the LDP will always aim the relief subsidies at Japan Inc. and let workers manage.

2 ( +10 / -8 )

We have conducted extremely rigorous assessments," Yasutoshi Nishimura, the industry minister, told a news conference.'

No, you didnt ....the fact is you approved a 42% rise vs 48% requested...ie almost completely taking power companies side at a time when price of imported gas decreased substantially since last year. You dont care for consumers, only for your amakudari jobs, Nishimura

4 ( +13 / -9 )

TEPCO is just a completely disgusting group of gangsters.

11 ( +17 / -6 )

From 14% to 42%?

Correction - 42% across the board within 3 months.

AND TEPCO will flood the Pacific with radiation, no matter what you think.

Now shut up, pay up, and know your place, serfs.

Don't forget to vote LDP next election so you remain in your place.

What do you think this is? A democracy? You belong to J-INC, and don't you forget it.

-2 ( +19 / -21 )

these bakayaro ojichan do anything but increase their interest rates.

0 ( +9 / -9 )

No mention of Kansai.

Until September the government is paying 20% of electricity and city gas. You can find the deductions on your bills.

13 ( +16 / -3 )

In the first three months in the UK, it generated more power from wind than from gas.

-1 ( +7 / -8 )

It's the utilities fault for relying on fuel imports and not investing more in renewable energy decades ago. It's embarrassing that Japan lags the world renewable energy installation when so much of the technology was developed here.

The government should condition any rate increases on agreement to procure more renewables and set specific yearly targets.

11 ( +16 / -5 )

Only 14% in Tokyo, lucky, glad official Inflation's only 3%!

-4 ( +8 / -12 )

The price of imported LNG decreased between Oct 22 and 23.73 to 15.73 by May 23. USD/MMBtu.

https://ycharts.com/indicators/japan_liquefied_natural_gas_import_price

8 ( +11 / -3 )

The rate hikes are highest where nuclear power plants are offline. Stop whining and get real. It’s time to start thinking seriously about building more nuclear power plants, the most stable and reliable source of energy.

-3 ( +10 / -13 )

Need to get ALL THE NUCLEAR POWER PLANTS back up and running!

The ridiculous oil & gas prices are the result of the sanctions against Russia. Who's actually paying the price of those sanctions? Hint: NOT RUSSIA!

-3 ( +12 / -15 )

The price of imported LNG decreased between Oct 22 and 23.73 to 15.73 by May 23. USD/MMBtu.

https://ycharts.com/indicators/japan_liquefied_natural_gas_import_price

They probably locked in future contracts at the peak, here's hoping they stay away from the roulette tables!

5 ( +6 / -1 )

The ridiculous oil & gas prices

both oil and gas spot prices have come down from the '22 highs...

4 ( +7 / -3 )

Yes, I agree we need Nuclear plants.

But we need TEPCO to go bankrupt first.

And get a reliable electric company to manage the nuclear.

-2 ( +8 / -10 )

Japa imports oil and gas from other producers than those in Russia

0 ( +8 / -8 )

combination of backfiring of antirussian sanctions and useless LDP crooks in charge.

as electricity will go up all goods prices will go up.

Fumio are you "proud"?

-1 ( +13 / -14 )

Japan seems to be 12 months behind the rest of the world with most things.

First boarder restrictions, then masks are encouraged to be removed and now this , fuel hikes.

In the uk fuel prices tripled with the backlash of the Ukrainian war.

Food prices have gone through the roof and the whole country appears to be on strike in demand for more pay to cover the costs.

I think we must now accept the world is in a recession, even though many governments refuse to come out into the open with such a strong statement.

-4 ( +8 / -12 )

Glad I dont see Osaka in there…YET.

This stinks of anmoney grab by big companies to me. The prices will also never go back down now will they?

5 ( +7 / -2 )

Welcome to UK energy prices! At least we have wind power increasing supply and making us less reliant on gas, Japan needs to look at this ASAP.

4 ( +9 / -5 )

We need more nuclear plants. Anyone that does not simply does not understand nuclear power.

Please research the subject instead of listening to the propaganda, or just go ahead and downvote in ignorance, I don't mind.

The simple truth is nuclear is clean energy (when done properly).

4 ( +10 / -6 )

How much in dollars is the average Japanese electric bill,I want to.know this ,in the Texas where I live ,your neighbors can pay 300 more dollars than you a month , which based on your provider ,in Texas each main provider has a monopoly regions,in which they are sole provider, they can sell electricity to other companies, which sell the same electricity at a higher price

-3 ( +1 / -4 )

This stinks.

Some time ago J Gov was talking about raising the consumption tax.

But they decided not to.

They got their money a different way. This way.

2 ( +7 / -5 )

Greedflation.

7 ( +10 / -3 )

Here is my advise to those of you who are still living in the Analogs ERA,

Get red of all fluorescents bulbs switch to LED ASAP.

Switch to digital hard drive PC and you will notice the difference.

Do NOT leave your your rice cocker in preheat at all times, this is a disaster.

Unplug any appliances when NOT in use as many will drain power at all times.

If you have the so called ECO on demand water boilers then I say you are screwed $$$, get rid of it.

get rid of your analog TV if you still have one!?

If you are using IH for cooking might as well buy a TV dinner as it will cost you more to cook a meal than to buy one, LOL

0 ( +5 / -5 )

Price controls and subsidies… I only read three paragraphs and feel so dismayed about this country’s economic model…

1 ( +3 / -2 )

With collapsing population and energy demand, hard to invest in anything in Japan, especially new highly regulated energy production.

-1 ( +5 / -6 )

Against the backdrop of soaring fuel prices last year following Russia's invasion of Ukraine, seven utilities, including Tokyo Electric Power (TEPCO), have requested the hikes in electricity rates from April and June to offset high input costs.

At what point does this worn out excuse get replaced with the truth, that the "green new deal" is responsible.

There is no climate change, or Russia, to blame, it is all by design.

Look to the WEF; the globalists. Ask them why you can't afford to cool or heat your house, or farm your fields, or use gas or oil... Hint: It's not because oil or gas are in short supply, and there is no "climate change" problem. There is propaganda, and lots of it.

1 ( +5 / -4 )

Wallace, how many in dollars,is your average electric bill ,our bill is about 112 dollars a month,as an American people on the same street pay 300 dollars or more based just on who you get your electric bill from

-2 ( +1 / -3 )

Yrral

Wallace, how many in dollars,is your average electric bill ,our bill is about 112 dollars a month,as an American people on the same street pay 300 dollars or more based just on who you get your electric bill from

You have asked me that twice already. Check the previous answer. Your bill is twice as much and I have a large house.

2 ( +3 / -1 )

Wage hike ...When?

1 ( +5 / -4 )

The electrical industry was deregulated a few years ago.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

Kyuden is the GOAT.

TEPCO is the scummiest enitity on earth.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

Wallace, lots of American would like to have a bill ,less than a 100 dollars, some pay 300 more than others on the same ,thanks anyway

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

My max power bill during winter is $80.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

walkace

OMG, how do you keep it sooo low, do you have thermal insulation or Something?

-3 ( +4 / -7 )

Kyuden is the GOAT.

They have the second most operational nuke plants. Kansai Electric has the most. That's why neither company is in this list for price increases.

We're on Chuden. I'll have to see how this price increase works out and look into getting solar.

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

Wallace, some American could face 1000 dollars a month this summer, based on just who billing their electric and some could pay less than 200 dollars for the same electricity

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

falseflagsteve

OMG, how do you keep it sooo low, do you have thermal insulation or Something?

No, just a normal 7LDK house. Feb is the highest bill but this year government is paying 20%. ¥12,000 (¥9,000 after subsidy.) We don't get the gas subsidy because we are on propane.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

It is, unfortunately, a good news story. The plan with the mountain of government debt has always been to inflate it away. One way or another, either through "criminal" levels of taxation or through inflation caused impoverishment the debt needs to be reduced. Surely, people didn't think that the crazy levels of government debt would never have to be paid back?

1 ( +1 / -0 )

Wallace

well, in February my bill was 24000, usually about 15000, can you believe it? Last month it was one 13000 which was much better. I saw the prices are going up in Osaka, phew! Lol!

-5 ( +0 / -5 )

I meant the prices aren’t going up in Osakaooh, whatt am I like. Oh, BTW my bill includes Gas bill too

-5 ( +0 / -5 )

Ok so electric prices up,

Food prices up, terrible exchange rate.

But we should all to our best and take a foreign holiday ( as reported by Japan today)

But no rise in wages

Hmmm

Something doesn't add up.

5 ( +5 / -0 )

No sir, I don't like it.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

I've got a Solar System set up on my roof here in Japan and I use TEPCO. My average monthly bill has been around Y4,000, since we built the house about 7 years ago. It would be around Y25,000 a month without the solar.

7 ( +9 / -2 )

Saiko

Great savings, nice one 8. Eco Friendly and saving serious dough, I like your style.

-7 ( +0 / -7 )

I’ll just buy more battery storage…

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

Coincidentally this rides on the moderate bump on the popularity of Kishida, difficult to blame him since it is not easy to predict when the next scandal of his government will happen so he needs to use his political funds as soon as he gets some.

3 ( +3 / -0 )

Well, all who grumble will now recosider my suggestion to use only one LED plugged into a laptop's USB to light up your work station and turn off all the rest? I save so much every month and it is good my eyes for i can stare into the darkness every so often, and it is good for the environment too.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

Time to set-up the mercury and cooper wire!

0 ( +0 / -0 )

And the average power bill in Florida is about $250 / month. 1500kWh. At least three times more consumption and three times the charge.

We have AC in every room. The system at the family condo in Florida was like an air circulation system.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

Righteous

I remember first moving to Oita as a JET and they dropped me off at a decent 2dk apartment in July. A kind teacher gave me an old tv and small refrigerator but the apartment had no ac or heater and I was soaking wet with sweat every day. They said you need to buy your own ac which was 70,000 yen which was impossible straight out of college. I did buy a kerosene heater for the winter but in retrospect I was basically camping for one year. Very low quality of living compared to what I expected.

You can't judge the whole country from your singular experience. Didn't you think to buy a fan or ask someone for one?

1 ( +1 / -0 )

Yes, a fan you know which makes wind and helps to keep you dry. Very cheap. Even with AC people use fans.

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

Ok so electric prices up,

Food prices up, terrible exchange rate.

But we should all to our best and take a foreign holiday ( as reported by Japan today)

But no rise in wages

Hmmm

Something doesn't add up.

The minimum wage is still around 1000 yen. It's been like that for a number of years. Then you have to pay into expensive health and pension schemes. You're right. Something doesn't add up.
