The recruit told police,,,,,,,,,,

Seems odd that this investigation is not being spearheaded by the GSDF which undoubtedly has a criminal investigation division as well as it's own military court and is more familiar with military protocol and procedures than the local police or the National Police Agency.

Indeed, the GJSDF does have its own MPs, and investigative agency. However the Japanese military has no courts martial and can only discharge an individual as maximum punishment. Crimes committed by military personnel are no doubt investigated by the MPs, but are ultimately prosecuted by the district attorney of the jurisdiction.

I have no doubt that the MPs are also all over this case, but military agencies tend to be less talkative to the press than police agencies.

Look, he’s eighteen and therefore formally a child, and in addition he was only a recruit in training and by far still no full JSDF member. Both will save him now somehow from those much more severe consequences that usually could be expected to be applied.

So he was trying to join the GSDF because he was trying to get his hands on some ammunition? Maybe he was trying to pocket some and got caught? Another person who can't tell what is reality.

Reminds me of that guy who killed the ANA pilot in the cockpit because he wanted to take the controls of the plane and fly it under the rainbow bridge like he did in the flight simulator video game back in 1999

The initial reports already confirmed that he loaded the magazine in his rifle at the ammo prep line, and pointed his weapon in a direction other than the target backstop.

Sgt Yashiro who was overseeing the ammo prep line, rushed to stop him but was shot in the abdomen.

If a few bullets was all he wanted, there are much easier ways to acquire ammo, even in Japan, that do not involve killing two instructors.

Seems very strange.

No dissatisfzction wit the victims nor with GSDF but wanted to kill one of the instructor for no reason.

So we are told from that story that a man who is assessed good enoug mentally for shooting is in fact insane ?

Or there was total lack of profile review perhaps ...?

IMHO, there is a reason obviously but hiding it.

I would not be surprised if copy-cat killers begin to appear from now, sometimes criminals do much more difficult things to get their hands on weapons just to kill some random person.

There always are. When I was in the military during the 1986 US war against Libya, all US Armed Forces commands were on max alert because there were a lot of threats from local yocal and domestic copycats and real terrorists (incl. domestic) who just wanted to get their Famous 15 Minutes. Getting into the limelight.

It was the same way in the early 00's after 9/11. There was a series of random murders in Washington DC by a crackpot and a young boy. And after Qaddafy was overthrown and killed in the 2011 Libya war, a few Libyan lone wolves who were pissed about it committed a few terrorist acts in the UK and France.

There's been many more cases, too numerous to list here.

Again, why hasn't the shooter been identified by name? He may still be in training but he became a public servant the moment he enlisted and took the oath of service. Regardless of his age the public is entitled to the information.

Authorities are considering subjecting the recruit, who has claimed no personal animosity toward the victims nor dissatisfaction with the GSDF, to a mental evaluation

As I first suspected might be the case, it appears to be another case of "I just wanted to kill someone", rather than as a result of being bullied, as many were assuming.

Honest question, why are investigators allowed to share this type of information? Shouldn’t this type of information only come out during a trail when everyone is sworn to tell the truth?

WAIT!! Authorities are considering subjecting the recruit, who has claimed no personal animosity toward the victims nor dissatisfaction with the GSDF, to a mental evaluation, according to the sources. One would think that he would have been evaluated before being recruited.
