It's hardly surprising that Lee would toe the Beijing line.

And just to point out the glaringly obvious hypocrisy: The Daya Bay NPP in Guangdong, which provides pretty much all of Hong Kong with electric power, releases some 40 to 50 TBq of tritium into the sea every year -- roughly twice as much as the planned Fukushima waste water release.

Very sad to see how nuclear hysteria is alive an well, and continues to be used for politics.

It's also funny see how, when it comes to Nuclear energy, being against what the experts say on the topic is 100% acceptable, even if they lack of any evidence or argument for doing so outside of "We don't know what will happen".

Stop the release of the Fukushima water into the ocean.

And is your solution?

9 ( +17 / -8 )

Well they will have to ban all marine products from all of Japan then won't they. If not the ban will be full of loopholes and easy to circumvent. Exporters are very clever and resourceful.

Who cares about Hong Kong any more, now that it’s been, transformed

Hong Who ?

3 ( +14 / -11 )

China using the uneducated nuclear scare as a political weapon.

11 ( +16 / -5 )

The comments are so sad.

Insults to every country that is not Japan.

The childish argument of: I'm a good boy, you're bad.

Chief Executive John Lee said

...LOL, this is a dude that entered an election of ONE candidate, congratulates himself afterwards, and still go home head held high....

Ignore him, he is nothing more than a CCP stooge. HK people still love Japanese seafood regardless of what this stooge says.

Exporters do. The article mentions that Japanese exports only make for 2% of Hong Kong's food imports, but the other way around it's more serious: Hong Kong accounts for roughly 15% of Japan's agricultural exports, China for about 20%.

Sooo tired of this BS. No one who complains on here can give even a remote idea of a better alternative. So open the taps already and let the water go to the best place!

13 ( +17 / -4 )

Typical political, anti-Japan rhetoric from Hong Kong scum. In reality, the water and food in HK would be far, far more likely to be contaminated - but the authorities there have contempt for their citizens.

Japan should in return boycott anything that still comes out of that sewer known as HK.

I have to go back to my comment on the previous thread (story). -12

Japan,

This is a bad look for you in the APAC region. You have to consider your neighbors and take the politics out of it. Before you open those valves and release this water. There is still a chance for an alternative solution.

Do not dump this tainted water into the Pacific. This is a monumental mistake. That will come back and bite hard. Its tough situation for Japan. One caused by nature.

No one would have thought it would come to this. Again human kind has made leaps and bounds and have reached feats that are surreal and unbelievable in the modern age.

Please, another deep look is warranted on this problem. There must be a way to be rid of the water other than dumping in in the ocean.

Its just utterly upsetting and wrong to punish the planet like this.

The post-WW2 globalism ended for good when Russia invaded Ukraine. Japanese fishermen and farmers should now concentrate on domestic markets rather than selling their products to nuclear-armed dictatorships.

Sayonara~ Sayonara~ Sayonara~! There are far more dangerous chemicals entering the food supply chains in

the far west Sea of Japan on a daily basis, so just keep eating that catch.

6 ( +11 / -5 )

Ignore CCP muppets. Them and the comments from the murdering Russian regime are of zero value to this issue.

That's not comparable, first that's Guangdong plant is not crippled as Fukushima even it's Made in China and second how much water they produce? Was that by millions like Japan did?

No need to worry for Hongkong there are plenty agriculture exporter that willing to supply to Hongkong, from North Africa, Europe, Australia, South East Asia to South America. They can replace Japan anytime after those contaminated water being released.

its not so difficult to get why all asian neigbours are concerned abt that "fukushima matter" as sales/exports will die all stuff will come to domestic market....so be ready for yummy fish.

-11 ( +2 / -13 )

We got food bans from China, Hong Kong, Russia and South Korea.

Good job, TEPCO !!

-19 ( +4 / -23 )

Does the people of Hong Kong has the right to choose what to eat or what not to eat. They don't want to eat Japanese seafood but they are 'OK' of people of other countries continue eating Japanese seafood. If you are blaming Hong Kong government over this ban, you are in hysterical anti Chinese and you need some chill pills!

-15 ( +2 / -17 )

China also discharges treated as 2.2-6.5 times as radioactive wastewater into the sea.

So I think this protest is not logical and scientific.

It is more like china try to disgrace Japan.

13 ( +15 / -2 )

It isn't like China is the place anyone should trust for safe water or safe food. Bans like this are purely for political reasons and have nothing to do with food safety.

12 ( +14 / -2 )

They can import from China instead. I used to live in China, food quality is none existent in some places.

8 ( +11 / -3 )

Just came back from Hong Kong just over a week ago.

I can tell you a lot of Hong Kongers will continue to eat food from Japan. They know that Japan produces quality.

Most Hong Kongers know that Mr. Lee is just a puppet and anything that he says is just towing the CCP line.

The next big idea from the government is to discontinue teaching English in schools and to introduce a mandatory mandarin curriculum. Another stupid idea leading to more disintegration of Hong Kong.

10 ( +13 / -3 )

I can tell you a lot of Hong Kongers will continue to eat food from Japan

Japanese produce will become kind of hard to eat though when the totalitarian scum running the place have banned it.

The smart Hong Kongers with skills - and who value freedom - have already got out. I pity those who remained.

9 ( +10 / -1 )

Hong Kong leaders? Beijing followers you mean. They have zero credibility.

11 ( +12 / -1 )

Honk Kong? Or China…..Lol

……politicizing health issues again…..rather than doing things in a logical and fair manner.

15 ( +16 / -1 )

@WiseKansae The Hong Kong government is implying a total ban of importing Japanese maritime agricultural products. How can someone in that city can still "Want to eat" those products of Japan? Stop bluffing.

The Chinese and Hong Kong never advocating other countries not to eat Japanese produced seafood, it is up to everyone to make their own decision. Actually the government of China and Hong Kong want to see people who dares to eat those seafood and their consequences. They are cautious and you can't blame them.

Ten years later if the Japanese government dare to tell the Chinese: Hey, our health is OK without suffering radioactive deseases. Then China and Hong Kong will lift those ban. Time will tell !

-7 ( +2 / -9 )

@ichiro: How can the Chinese argument or ban is "Disgracing" Japan? Do you know the Japanese fisheries were strongly against the decision of Japanese government's release of radioactive water? Their lives of make a living nhas been ruined. How who is the disgrace here?

-9 ( +1 / -10 )

Good! Let's hope EVERY SINGLE nation on Earth follows suit. Japan has had more than a decade to deal with this, and it was all based on lies and incompetence to begin with (What fault lines? No one could have known!). In fact, every single export from Japan should be banned until the release stops, and until the clean up and decommissioning of the plant is finished if they even begin.

-16 ( +2 / -18 )

In terms of environmental issues, China, Russia, and South Korea have a more negative impact on other countries.

Air pollution, soil pollution, and water pollution are unfortunately worse in those countries.

Japan should definitely stop importing foodstuffs from those countries.

Because you can buy as much as you want from other countries.

6 ( +7 / -1 )

No big loss Hong Kong, get your food from big brother China and see how that is.

Probably a lot cheaper (and just as good).

-11 ( +0 / -11 )

Only Hongkong banning sea products from Japan? All countries in the world should ban seafood products after Japan pours nuclear poisoned water into the Pacific Ocean because all oceans of the world are interconnected. And Japan will be dumping nuclear poison for forty [40]

years - that is till the end of 2063! All people in the world should NOT eat fish and seafood products for forty [40] years - until 2063.

-13 ( +1 / -14 )

BTW, is tap water safe to drink in Hong Kong yet? It wasn't last time I was there.

Everyone living there was getting filtered water delivered or buying bottled water to avoid getting sick. For someone used to drinking tap water and using tap water for everything, remembering to keep your mouth and eyes shut in the shower and using bottled water to brush your teeth is a bit odd.

Hotels claim to have water purification in Hong Kong and I bet they worked great the first year after the building was completed. 20 yrs later, not so much. I often get a rash from the water in Hong Kong taps just by showering with it. And this is for 4-star hotels, so I can only imagine what 3-star hotel water is like.

BTW, Costa Rica has safe to drink tap water even in very remote places like Monteverde so it isn't like developing countries can't do it, if they make it a priority. Everyone needs clean water everywhere in the world. Wasting hours a day getting it is just dumb.

years - that is till the end of 2063! All people in the world should NOT eat fish and seafood products for forty [40] years - until 2063.

FUD much? The science says to avoid fish directly at the end of the release point(s), but after 3 miles, the water is just like water in the middle of the Pacific ocean. Fish swim. Some will feed near the release points.

Further, Japan will be specifically farming fish near the released water so they can track any oddities that show up. When the fish they farm nearby are healthy, we'll know any issues can't be blamed on the released water. If they aren't healthy, the release plan can be altered.

Please get your news from less biased sources than RT and the CCP-news with their FUD. Their goal is political, not food safety.
