A clear demonstration of what's wrong with the system, and the cause of most of the major issues we face.

Companies are owned and run for the sole purpose of maximising profits, no matter the real social and environmental costs.

It's astonishing that people still down thumb comments that simply present facts.

Is it because they don't like the facts, or that they don't like to know the facts?

It's good news but unfortunately, no amount of money will save the coral reefs unless more serious action is taken to reduce climate change.

It's predicted that 70~90 of coral is to be severely damaged/die off with just 1.5C of warming, which is basically guaranteed to happen by 2050, and that rises to 99% of coral if/when 2C of warming is reached.

@tora LOL that jungle was all savanna only about 2,000 years ago.

Japan's population was 72m just after WWII. 125m is way too many people, particularly when you consider 70% of Japan is mountainous and over 90% of the population confine themselves to the dense urban cityscapes.

Many quality of life improvements could be realised if the government just manage the changing demographics (falling and aging population) with sensible long-term policies rather than knee-jerk, vote-motivated policies.

The tricky part, he said, would be figuring out how to store this energy and pump it across the vast distances between Australian towns and cities.

Not tricky. Perfect conditions for transitioning to a hydrogen society. Use excess renewable energy to make hydrogen which can be stored and transported, AND used for transportation.

@Tora the article you refer to was based on Lomborg, the infamous Climate Change sceptic. And if your goto place for information is the NYP, may be you also read the article

... more food production

Really?

The UN is predicting global food production to fall by 30% by 2050 due to climate change.

More people need to get informed about the realities of climate change.

21 of the hottest years have occurred in this century. And with La Niña's cooling effect last year, 2022 was still the 6th hottest year on record.

So with the heating of El Niño, the reality of climate change is going to be starker.

Let's hope at least, it finally leads to real commitment to decoupling the economic system from fossil fuel.

G7 pledges to quit fossil fuels faster, but no new deadline set

Of course. They don't want to upset their main donors and lobbyists - oil, gas industry - too much.

@almakukac

@ifd66 Nice trolling. Though you didn't understand what 15 minute cities mean and what impacts the EVs have.

I majored in sustainable development and teach it at university. I am fully aware of the term. 15-minute cities - the urban planning concept to make cities less reliant on cars and in general more liveable sustainable environments.

Why not do a quick search yourself for "15-minute cities" and get informed?

I agree with Temyong's comments above.

Focus on 15-minute cities, green public transportation, trans-continental train lines, green shipping, pool-car use, and in general, less reliance of resource and space heavy cars.

@SDCA That's awesome! As a fellow diesel owner myself, might I ask where you are able to purchase the oil for your car?

We collect waste oil from local shops - tempura. And it's free.

We run our 30 year old Toyota Hilux Surf on waste vegetable oil (WVO) but have looking for a reliable electric SUV/pickup to replace it.

Many models available in Europe and the US, but nothing available in Japan.

Increasing charging infrastructure will probably also happen at a very slow pace.

Chinese tourists made only for roughly 0.4% of Japan's GDP.

So on a cost benefit analysis - to ensure quality of life for locals, emissions issues etc - it seems clear that tourism from abroad should be limited to 'sustainable' levels.

It has nothing to do with global warming/climate change.

No single event can be said to be attributed (or NOT) to climate change.

However, more and more extreme weather events fit very strong and predicted patterns that can be said with increasing certainly to be more probable due to the climate crisis.
