Economy and Industry Minister Yasutoshi Nishimura met with national fishing association officials Friday to seek understanding of the fishing communities.

National Federation of Fisheries Cooperative Associations chief Masanobu Sakamoto said their opposition is unchanged.

Will customer really understand that and keep buying fisheries products from those regions? It easy for ministries since they don't need to deal with declining product sales after water release.

From looking at this picture, they are going to do this regardless of what any industry, agency and people in Japan and in the world think.

Yes, I certainly so. It's best to ignore people with a political agenda and people ignorant of science.

Neither ever solve problems.

Wow, a whole 1km offshore! Spare no expense on the length of that pipeline, thanks again TEPCO and gov.JPN ! U guys R tops

-7 ( +10 / -17 )

This must be like the tenth article telling us 'Japan prepares to release Fukushima water'. Not one of them has mentioned a date that they plan to do it.

12 ( +18 / -6 )

And how many years are they going to keep dumping?

6 ( +14 / -8 )

What is the use, what is the purpose of diluting nuclear poisoned water before release into the Pacific Ocean? The Pacific Ocean has enough water to dilute the nuclear poinoned water. And as all oceans in the world are interconnected the nuclear poisoned water will be carried around the world to poison all fish and poison all people who eat the fish. If Japan does not want that to happen, WHY dump the nuclear poisoned water into the Pacific Ocean? Leave the nuclear poison water where it is. Afraid it will poison people in Japan? So evaporate the poisoned water quickly!

-12 ( +7 / -19 )

TEPCO and LDP also told the residents that the nuke reactors were safe. In fact there's a famous sign in Futaba, 原子力明るい未来のエネルギー, Nuclear power, bright energy of the future. Yeah right. Can you blame the residents for not trusting the government and TEPCO? Could be safe, could be well within safety limits, but NIMBY. I'm sure Nishimura and Kishida are in that group.

-5 ( +10 / -15 )

As soon as this radioactive water dump starts Hong Kong, South Korea and other countries should ban all the imports from Japan.

Anyway I'm not eating products from Fukushima since long time ago and now will have to have up on Japanese fish products completely.

You guys can have my share of radioactive waste.

-12 ( +10 / -22 )

How much does anyone want to bet it has already started, or they will start, and "say" they started at a later date.

-9 ( +9 / -18 )

The cooling of the corium and the additional leakage of underground water could go on for several more decades and probably beyond 2050. TEPCO does not know how to recover the corium.

5 ( +12 / -7 )

I’m way less concerned about this than I am about the extensions granted to the already aging reactors dotted around Japan.

3 ( +10 / -7 )

Dee - From looking at this picture, they are going to do this regardless of what any industry, agency and people in Japan and in the world think.

It's been the plan since day one of the storage opperation. They sat on their hands for over a decade watching this water build up to a point where there was no alternative than to release it into the sea. The secondary filter system, pumps and piping has taken over five years to build. They started bulding it long before they announced the plan to dump it into the sea. All the secrecy and misinformation make it difficult to believe anything the J-Gov and TEPCO say. Hopefully, they are correct and this release will have a "negligible" impact on the environment. However, if they are not correct it will be an irreversable environmental nuclear disaster on a scale never before seen.

-4 ( +8 / -12 )

Guess I won't be surfing anywhere near Fukushima then.

-4 ( +10 / -14 )

@Yubaru

How much does anyone want to bet it has already started, or they will start, and "say" they started at a later date.

Well, the radioactive water from the plant had been leaking for years despite repeated denial from TEPCO.

Another fun fact: much of the seafood served in Japan comes from Miyagi, so yeah...

1 ( +7 / -6 )

From looking at this picture, they are going to do this regardless of what any industry, agency and people in Japan and in the world think.

They are following the science - being supported by the experts at the IAEA - and ignoring the opposition - which is based 100% on politics and people/nations who are fervently anti-Japan.

Get that safe water flowing.

Guess I won't be surfing anywhere near Fukushima then.

As if you were going to anyway!

-1 ( +13 / -14 )

Can this small pipe, reaching into the sea, really carry the same or more amount of treated water than what is still occurring due to cooling of the reactors?

-3 ( +3 / -6 )

More brain washing on ‘how safe it is’

Ingesting Tritium and other elements from contaminated sea life won’t be safe for the consumer!

There aren’t any studies out there that show that it is!

-9 ( +9 / -18 )

business is business and LDP friendly business is above the law.

no one cares what people think,no one cares what neigbouring countries think/and what they will do/.

-6 ( +9 / -15 )

Time to buy seafood now before it gets tainted

-14 ( +6 / -20 )

"Guess I won't be surfing anywhere near Fukushima then."

Fighto:

As if you were going to anyway!

Yeah, I used to surf up and down that coastline all the way up to Shinko in Sendai.

Have avoided surfing the Fukushima area since the disaster but would consider it if I were in the area since surfers have gotten back in the water over there.

But with this news, NO.

-3 ( +7 / -10 )

@ Speed - this release of treated and tested water should not stop you. I bet you've surfed in far more contaminated water before without even realising.

8 ( +14 / -6 )

Get that safe water flowing.

It is not safe water. Only iodine, and cesium is removed. Even strontium is not totally removed. There are over 20 radionuclides in that “safe water”.

-7 ( +8 / -15 )

And on Monday the populace celebrate and pay homage to the waters that surround Japan. Umi no Hi (Day of the sea)

1 ( +6 / -5 )

Oh no, they are doing exactly what they announced to everyone in the world they were doing for years, what the whole world thought they would be doing anyway, what they were preparing to do for a decade, what they got the international watchdog agency to confirm to be safe that they are doing, and exactly when they said they were doing it?

I'm shocked. Shocked! This is my shocked face!

2 ( +8 / -6 )

This might be a Hindenburg moment for the Jgov. They seem “smart” for doing this, but it’s breaking trust in peoples faith that they can handle anything sensibly.

-5 ( +5 / -10 )

Don't worry when we test the water there won't be any tritium in it .

> Oh ok thankyou

Nothing but sip sip sip…Ahhhh!

Taste the Safety Water.

-8 ( +4 / -12 )

The greatest threat to Mother Nature- This Planet is Human Beings. Nothing lasts forever though….

-1 ( +6 / -7 )

This is not gonna end well for Japan.

Food bans and protests are only gonna get more frequent.

-11 ( +2 / -13 )

It is pity that some coutures take such actions without scientific and logical perspective

But in return, it reached the agreement between Japan and EU yesterday. Which is  EU lifted import restrictions from Japan since Fukushima’s nuclear accident.

It means it tune to be no need to take inspections of radioactivity for food trading

This is because Japanese government’s effort to urged EU to prove safety and EU understood it scientifically and logically.

5 ( +7 / -2 )

@Alan Bogglesworth You don't know Japanese. They've been screwed over by the LDP for over 70 years and they still remain in power. The LDP is a cult. Also, Japanese have very short memories. They will soon be munching away on fish from that area without a second thought.

-4 ( +4 / -8 )

Not much harm but guaranteed this will have at least increased the number of those who will get cancer. One factor of increased Cancer patients is a result to all the pollution we have doing to our environment. Embrace

IAEA chief denies advising Japan on nuclear wastewater discharge

Isn't it common sense that if the Tritium isn't separated by water that dumping in into the ocean it will undoubtedly be consumed by marine life ?

How dumb do they think we are ?

That's why TEPCO are rearing fish in the water - to prove it's safe. This is also monitored by the IAEA:

**"We[IAEA] do not endorse the plan or recommend this to be done**

https://japantoday.com/category/national/exclusive-iaea-chief-grossi-nods-to-discord-among-its-fukushima-report-experts

-6 ( +1 / -7 )

"We[IAEA] do not endorse the plan or recommend this to be done"

And noone asked them to. Spinning the semantics that this means they advise against it is an argument in very bad faith.

They were asked to undertake an independent safety review against the international standards, to which Grossi said immediately after your very selective quote:

"We say this plan is consistent with the standards"

1 ( +3 / -2 )

Don't wanna hear again the the IAEA is endorsing the plant.

I made that point crystal clear in the last 2 posts.

IAEA is not endorsing anything or anyone.

-6 ( +1 / -7 )

IAEA is not endorsing anything or anyone.

And noone here said they did.

1 ( +3 / -2 )

The IAEA endorsed the release of the wastewater.

0 ( +2 / -2 )

The IAEA endorsed the release of the wastewater.

Don't! You'll anger the lunatic!

0 ( +2 / -2 )

The endorsements are in the IAEA reports. But the IAEA has no legal authority and must be decided by the Japanese government.

-1 ( +2 / -3 )

For Japan's neighbors, especially China, South Korea, and North Korea, to stop importing fisheries and processed products is very meaningful from the perspective of protecting marine resources.

Especially in the Yellow Sea, marine resources are being depleted because China and South and North Korea are overfishing.

They troll in their fishing boats, plucking up the roots and turning them into gold, whether juvenile or immature.

Hundreds of Chinese fishing boats have formed fleets and are repeatedly operating illegally near territorial waters around the world.

If China, South Korea, and North Korea, which believe in unscientific things and overfish fish, stop fishing, they will receive praise from all over the world. I can't wait for that day to come.

The hysteria and anti-Japan marches and fake outrage will only intensify in the coming days. We are talking hundreds of thousands of moronic protesters out on the streets of Seoul and Beijing, much to the delight of nationalists in both countries who have a desperate need to divert attention away from the failures and hypocrisy of their own governments.

4 ( +6 / -2 )

Another day of infamy.

The worlds oceans should not be the treated as the nuclear radioactive sewage of any country.

-2 ( +3 / -5 )

Hmm. People get suspended for less hitting language than that.

Anyway, nothing of the sort.

It is legitimate concern of global citizens.

Remember when japan dumped french wine in the streets of japanese cities when the french tested their nuclear weapons in the pacific about 25-30 years ago?

Same difference.
