So no police investigation either?

16 ( +19 / -3 )

Its beyond irritation, the steer arrogance, the failure of a duty of care, exploitation depravity it very very irritating.

Only an independent judicial public inquiry, the company, the participants giving evidence under oath.

Laurie Wesselhoff, a lecturer at Keio University in Tokyo and a cultural anthropologist, said Japan should do better, stressing there was “absolutely no possibility” the in-house investigation would be impartial.

Those “complicit in these crimes will remain in their positions, like nothing has happened. Inexcusable. Accountability must be called for. Simply saying we won’t do it again makes a mockery of sexual abuse legislation,” she said.

Here, here

Heads rolling in the saw dust

Self investigation is a joke. Even I knew about the abuse. So, no credibility inside Johnny's.

18 ( +23 / -5 )

It is like if Hitler would have been judged by Goebbels

Kitagawa is a criminal and no one was to endorse any responsibilty because those involved are high in society status if not friends of politicians.

No see no hear no evil.

What a flawed justice system !

You can give a negative vote to this post if you don't like this foreign lecturer saying the response is inadequate.

Use to be; you do the crime, you do the time... Now it's maybe perhaps not another time.

0 ( +4 / -4 )

And what of AKB and the other pubescent girl groups?

-7 ( +10 / -17 )

The media, the government and the police won't do anything. I wonder if fans of Johnny's fans have enough of a conscience to stop supporting the company and individuals who were responsible for and complicit in the sexual exploitation of the bands they supposedly love.

You tell it sister! How this is not a criminal investigation just beggars belief! It is one of tghe things that used to really disappoint me when living in Japan. This "Shoganai" culture just emboldens corrupt official and people in power!

-4 ( +5 / -9 )

The well-to-do and connected types never have to pay for their crimes. Doesn't matter the country,

Jimmy Jimusho in Japan.

Prince Andrew in the UK.

All of Epstein's clients wherever they may be.

9 ( +11 / -2 )

Only now. Many knew of the allegations years ago however Japan just turned a blind eye for profits.

5 ( +9 / -4 )

Total whitewash.

but rather aims to prevent such cases in the future,

The perpetrator is dead for Christ’s sake, I’m pretty sure Johnny won’t be raping any kids in the future with or without such an investigation. Nice way to frame your remit so that nobody at Johnnys today will face any consequences though.

The police and prosecutors, and lawyers representing the victims, need to be doing the actual investigation and hold this twisted business to account,

9 ( +10 / -1 )

An investigation by a major Japanese talent agency into sexual abuse allegations against its founder won’t address monetary or criminality questions but rather aims to prevent such cases in the future, the lead investigator said Monday

What a bunch of BS. This isnt an "investigation", it's closing the barn door after all the horses ran away! The only person being accused of anything is dead, and this is just a response to make it seem like they are doing "something".

Now I think the folks who were abused should be suing them. There is nothing that will change and they should pay for it now!

Jimmy Jimusho in Japan.

Who or what the hell is this agency?

3 ( +7 / -4 )

Hayashi stressed his panel’s efforts are independent despite being paid by Johnny’s office.

This comment would be prime comedy if it weren't so despicable.

Saying the Johnny's-funded investigation panel is "independent" carries about as as much credibility as running a segment on vaccine safety & efficacy sponsored by Pfizer.

Yubaru

My understanding of the the Jimusho System.

Jimusho System: Part One

https://neojaponisme.com/2010/04/05/the-jimusho-system-part-one/

It is, humbly, an essential read..

It is an insight into how exploitation manifests begins.

You don't need to be a lawyer or police to smell the corruption of Johnny Kitagawa, but you do need to be a politician to ignore everything that identifies "Johnny's" as a criminal organization, Japanese corruption by any other name. NOT "following the money" is how corruption thrives in Japan, the fine art of capitalism, indeed.

As usual, takes a foreigner to plainly state the obvious. The establishment will as always perform the typical whitewash. Is anyone so stupid to believe results of any self investigative probe?

-5 ( +7 / -12 )

They protected dude for decades and are allowing them to do internal investigations only when serious allegations of sexual abuse towards children is on the table? And they are also touting they will change laws to protect children… which is it?

The company needs to be dismantled and people who “everyone knew “ need to be arrested for some level of capability. This whole thing is insane just to protect some famous people who’s careers won’t be affected by it at this point like Arashi or SMAP members. Shut these people down and don’t let anyone get away.

8 ( +8 / -0 )

How is it that the cops are not crawling all over Johnnie's carrying out crate after crate of documents and the prosecutors have not opened an investigation yet?

This is a decades long crime that is unfolding before our eyes (to be fair, we have known about it for some time) and the cops are doing jack.

9 ( +10 / -1 )

Hayashi said finding fault was not the point of the probe and suggested instead that aspects of the company culture may not have taken sexual abuse seriously.

“But our mission is separate from any criminal investigation,” he said.

To smugly stand/attend a staged press conference and state such a callous hollow contemptuous cynically dismissive refusal accept responsibility.

To then openly admit to a fake charade investigation is frankly deplorable.

Grrrrr...

Johnny's says its investigation won't address monetary or criminality questions

Sounds like the LDP investigations into its corruption or connected projects like the Olympics.

Who says there is a rule of law or one legal standard applies to all?

It is a fiction, and the case of Johnny Kitagawa, like Epstein and his associates, are great examples.

Legal sanctions are never apportioned due to the severity of the crime, but the socioeconomic influence of the criminal.

1 ( +4 / -3 )

Imagine Operation Yewtree saying this in the UK!

What an utter travesty of "justice"!

1 ( +4 / -3 )

*“We see what has happened at the company and this is a serious governance problem,” Makoto Hayashi, a former prosecutor, told reporters at a Tokyo hotel.*

Heh, Heh! Classic obfuscation - weaseling away from the real problem.

That is / was - ongoing systemic sexual abuse of minors within a Power Corrupt framework.

And systemic it was - because all knew about it.

And when the first allegations / court cases surfaced decades ago with rulings implicating Kitagawa, did the abuse stop?

No - he continued on his slimy way with those in the know obviously keeping eyes wide shut.

Beyond Belief.

No Mr Prosecutor this is not a governance problem - this is a Criminal Problem.

In Japan, money is above all religions. So if you have money, you cannot commit sinful crimes. You will be protected by the authority.

Johnny's says its investigation won't address monetary or criminality questions !

Uh ! . Whatever you do DONT ask us to pay for this.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

There is so much physical, sexual and psychological abuse perpetrated against children by adults in this country that goes unpunished, ignored or even (sickly) accepted. I fear bringing up my children in this country because their chances of being sexually abused is so high and would likely go unpunished.

2 ( +5 / -3 )

Makoto Hayashi, a former prosecutor,

Says it all really. He is there to uphold the status quo. His pay has always depended on it.

0 ( +3 / -3 )

Legal sanctions are never apportioned due to the severity of the crime, but the socioeconomic influence of the criminal.

Very well put!

Japan’s "lagging fight" against sexual harassment and abuse.

"Lagging"? That's putting it EXTREMELY lightly! Borderline non exsistant! In other developed countries, they would be protesting in the streets for Johnny's company to either take responsibilities for its disgusting actions upon the innocent and be transparent with the investigation or face the wrath of the masses. I know he died in 2019, but this isn't new news! WHy didn't they go after him while he was alive? He's the Japanese version of that Harvey guy!

Johnny's says its investigation won't address monetary or criminality questions

> > Dozens of children, perhaps hundreds, may have been assaulted while working at Johnny’s.

This in itself should involve monetary and criminality questions and responsibility.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

So no police investigation either?

Ok, pray tell how you are going to start a police investigation, when no one has filed any charges, or made any official reports to them regarding this, AND the person that would be the focus of the investigation is dead.

Should police start investigations based purely on hearsay?

-5 ( +1 / -6 )

"Dozens of children, perhaps hundreds, may have been assaulted while working at Johnny’s."

Oh, well, then we simply CANNOT have any criminality looked into in this investigation, nor recompense. I mean, hundreds of kids molested by Kitagawa and Co? peshaw!

-2 ( +5 / -7 )

No monetary questions.

No Criminality questions.

No point whatsoever i this entire kabuki.

I am reliably informed that Jimmy Savile investigated Gary Glitter under similar circumstances and everything was just peachy, no need to worry your heads about this kind of stuff, just look at the pretty boys.

2 ( +5 / -3 )

Makoto Hayashi, a former prosecutor,

Loot first mentality.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Of course not! They could still be prosecuted or sued! They will just focus on the dead pedophile who can no longer be sent to jail or sued for his heinous acts.

They can blame all of the company's problems on the serial predator and walk away with their hands clean and not pay one silver yen.

Without the Johnny's, Japanese TV would suck even more than now!

3 ( +3 / -0 )

Tear it down to the ground

3 ( +3 / -0 )

They could still be prosecuted or sued!

Who is going to prosecute a dead man?

-2 ( +1 / -3 )

You can give a negative vote to this post if you don't like this foreign lecturer saying the response is inadequate.

-10( +6 / -16 )

And there you have it folks. No matter how heinous the crime, or how ineffective the response, there are some who simply don't want to hear any criticism from certain types who don't belong.

-1 ( +5 / -6 )

*“We see what has happened at the company and this is a serious governance problem,” Makoto Hayashi, a former prosecutor, told reporters at a Tokyo hotel.*

Kind of tells you all you need to know. This and the Japanese media shying away from covering this in the news is proof that 'saving face' or 'whitewashing' in Japanese society is more important than telling the truth. 'Saving face' is often done through denial and outright lies.

0 ( +3 / -3 )

Got it.... anyone giving negatives for people disgusted with this white wash are either pedophiles or working for Johhny!!!

0 ( +2 / -2 )

Former prosecutor umm looks like he is protecting the system by not wanting to discuss monetary penalties. Perhaps afraid of setting a precedence throughout Japan for sex related crimes.
