Aso's 'fight for Taiwan' remark in line with official view, lawmaker says

Former Japanese Prime Minister Taro Aso's remark on Tuesday that his country must show "the resolve to fight" to defend Taiwan from attack was in line with Tokyo's official stance, a lawmaker close to Aso told a TV show late on Wednesday.

Aso, vice president of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), said in Taipei that Japan, the United States and others must show strong resolve to come to Taiwan's defense if it were attacked, signaling deterrence against China.

Aso's speech angered China, which claims Taiwan as its territory. A Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson said on Wednesday that Beijing urges Japan to abide by the One China principle and refrain from supporting pro-independence Taiwan forces in any way.

Keisuke Suzuki, an LDP lawmaker who accompanied Aso's Taiwan visit this week, told the BS Fuji talk show on Wednesday that Aso had discussed the issue with Japanese government officials, indicating that Aso's view did not deviate from the official position.

"The comment was not lawmaker Taro Aso's personal remark, but a result of arrangements with government insiders", Suzuki said. "I think the Japanese government clearly regards this as the official line."

Aso's visit, which marked the most senior Japanese political official to visit Taiwan since 1972, when Japan normalized diplomatic relations with China, came as tensions have risen over democratically governed Taiwan amid China's increasing military pressure on the island during the past three years.

The United States unveiled a Taiwan weapons aid package worth up to $345 million last month. Japan, a close U.S. ally, is in the midst of a historic boost to defence spending.

U.S. President Joe Biden has repeatedly said U.S. forces would defend Taiwan in the event of a Chinese invasion, which the White House said was not a shift in U.S. policy.

Asked about Aso's speech, Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary Hirokazu Matsuno, Tokyo's top government spokesperson, said on Wednesday that Japan has consistently hoped for a peaceful settlement of issues regarding Taiwan thorough dialogue.

Asked whether Japan would deploy its military to Taiwan if there is a crisis, Matsuno declined to comment, saying the government would not answer a hypothetical question.

Yes, right. Fight for the flights of Japanese nationals out of the seige of Taiwan. That was totally reasonable and should be done asap!

Chicken Hawks rattling their sabres. How much they've forgotten about war in such a short time. You shore won't see Aso on the front lines. Rather, you'll see Aso Cement making tons of money with projects for air raid bunkers, construction of JSDF facilities, and other war time infrastructure upgrades.

Aso has a son. I am sure he will a proud and happy father if his son lose his life to defend Taiwan!

Whatever ones opinion of Former Japanese Prime Minister Taro Aso as a politician.

Taro Aso assessment of the threat to Taiwan, its people, the essential global shipping lanes through the Taiwan Strait, South/East China Sea is undisputed.

An invasion of Taiwan will have unthinkable global consequences.

Go get'um Taro, everyone is behind you all 30 hawkish JT posters, shame they couldn't help you with your brief attempt at being PM.

Japan considers peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait to be fundamental to it's own security. That is the wish of all Asia. China should denounce the use of force to take control of Taiwan. Then it will have no need to enter conflict with the United States.

I think every country and particularly ones with technical knowhow can contribute to building low cost air and sea based drones. If said drones had the ability to have large amounts of explosive added to them and navigated into ships, so much the better.

But, the statement and "stance" are against the constitution of Japan. Japan can not legally do a damn thing in defense of Taiwan without changing the constitution first.

Retire!

Support and unity, regionally globally go hand in hand with the recognition that the Government of China is fully intent to implement its One China policy/principle with military action.

Hong Kong is evidence that the Government of China can never be trusted to abide by even rudimental rules based international law.

To quote......an agreement to acknowledge...

Human rights protection is enshrined in the Basic Law and its Bill of Rights Ordinance (Cap. 383). By virtue of the Bill of Rights Ordinance and Basic Law Article 39, the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR)

Never materialized.

The threat of an invasion and seizure Taiwan Strait, must be met with a statement, that the global community will unequivocally defend Taiwan with military action, ground sea and air, no less.

Yes up to a declaration of war.

We have history to teach us the consequences of appeasing dictators.

It is a fact that with all the talk of nuclear proliferation, the Government of Japan will need to consider its own off shore strategic/tactical deterrent.

Aso..

Anyone with a ring on their little finger like he has is creepy. Sorry.

He has a point here to an extent, but I don't want to see Japan go up against China. China would crush Japan and I live here!

America would of course come to the rescue, but China would definitely deal some real damage to Japan.

Awful to even think about it.

Absolutely no one does.

But, from history, Japan dealt with China pretty well last time around.

Incorrect. Over the last 30 years or so Japan has "reinterpreted" it's constitutional restraints to meet it's needs. To assist Taiwan, Japan would not be starting a war, which is prohibited under Paragraph 1 of Article 9. Furthermore, should assisting US forces come under Chinese attack, the JSDF would be authorized to act in Collective Defense which has already been recognized.

Reginald Bok, sadly running scared of an aggressive bully is not an effective defence. Appeasement of an aggressive bully has been shown time and again to merely encourage their behaviour. The best and only effective way of ensuring they don’t attack is to ensure they realise it is going to hurt them more.

Taiwan is an independent, successful and democratic country, which being next door and highly visible is precisely why is scares the hell out of the Chinese dictatorship and they want to drag it down to their own dystopian level.

Irresponsible warmonger, Aso.

Himself never fight at battlefield.

-4 ( +15 / -19 )

He shall bravely stand at the front line with his sons and grandsons! Oh, wait…

I have always admired Aso san. And he is right. The time approaches to make a stand against Chinese aggression. But word of caution Japan. When time comes to put up a fight and it will as the sun is sure to rise.

Remember your words spoken and promises made. Taiwan will be depending on Japan to come through.

The "one China policy" is only for China...

...and for companies that wanna bathe into their money.

Not nearly enough. They need 1 billion or more.

But a half a loaf of bread is better than no bread.

That is some hair dye job, Aso. Can't be comfortable with your actual age, how can you be comfortable with actual facts?

-1 ( +11 / -12 )

Maybe if Japanese leaders, stop running their big mouth, they stay out of trouble, Japanese cannot defend themselves against a wet paper bag

-7 ( +11 / -18 )

Japan can barely feed 40% of its population without imports so naturally Japanese politicians are just a little concerned about Taiwan ...

Actually no you and fellow JT hawks are as deluded and lost as Aso, on this issue and generally everything else.

But I will admit that occasionally a few of you make a good post, and that's more than most of you can own up to.

You miss the point totally. Japan doesnt need to "start" a war of aggression, and "reinterpretation" of the current constitution is open to discussion, and not based upon YOUR definition!.

War-talk is cheap when you're far from the front line. The Aso family no doubt made a killing from the last three wars (WW2, Korea, Indo-China) and will do so from the next. War is a racket, innit?

What is that fossil doing with a mic in his hand? Take him to a beach for retirement FGS!

Aso's speech angered China? Of course it could! Of course it should!!Of course China Taiwan is NO business of Japan!!! Or of the U.S.A. !!!!

Or of any country in the world!!!!! It is China's and China's business alone!!!!!!! Okay?

My humble opinion is to understand or have a perspective to where the Asia-Pacific Region future security is destabilizing under the constant threat from the Government of China

Why China-Taiwan Relations Are So Tense

https://www.cfr.org/backgrounder/china-taiwan-relations-tension-us-policy-biden

How did the region reach this point succumbing to a regime that is prepared to threaten world peace.....

China’s Military Aggression in the Indo-Pacific Region

Both Trump and Biden agree on the need to take action.

Both Presidents at least maintained a policy that recognizes this fact.

Your response is as lacking in any substance as your first post. Read Article 9 for yourself first before declaring what is a violation or not.
