....and what for?

How do they communicate. Most Japanese can’t speak English or French and most French do not like to speak English.

I wish governments would spend less on the military and more on helping the disadvantaged.

....and what for?

Obviously to let China know that if they start a war in the Pacific they will be confronting NATO as well. Not that hard to figure out.

What France brings to the table.

The French piolets tore up Iraq. Ruthless.

It is called "training". Military's do it, sports teams do it and it is nothing out of the ordinary.

French used to be the official aviation language but now it's English. All commercial and military pilots must be able to speak English. It's mandatory.

Off topic for this conversation and incorrect.

Time has not stood still for the French. The French military is much more capable than sixty years ago.

France can't help Asia !

Says who? France has the capacity to help others in many ways. Unless you think Asia simply cant be helped by anyone....

I'm tired of hearing people say that military cooperation is useless and should be used for insurance and welfare.

If the state is not kept at peace by force of arms, there is neither insurance nor welfare.

There is no way Japan can abandon military force in its current position.

If there are people who are complaining, they should shout to China, which is increasing its military budget, Russia, which is waging war, North Korea, which is developing missiles, and South Korea, which is invading Japan's Takeshima, to cut military spending.

No one will listen to you if you do that.

No can wants war, No one wants to see a death and destruction anywhere except WARMONGERS and their backers in the war machines industry.

France better worrying their little Europe instead messing with Peoples Republic of China. Mr.Putin is dedicated to get back the lands of former Soviet Union. Because NATO did not honour their promise of eastward expansion putting the entire Sea of Baltic in danger, an imminent danger to St. Petersburg. How many Aircraft Carrier does the French has ? One !

By the way, the Sino Russian military cooperation will further extend to North Pole, China is very interested with the natural resources over North Pole although she is not located near the top of the world. Asia is definitely not European's business, they will break if their forces over stretching!

Yes, France can't help Asia, period! France still has some former colonies in central Africa like Chad has insurgencies. If the Europeans don't fix their problems with Islamic insurgencies from the Islamic world, they are coming for you. You know some European countries piss off the Muslins by buying the Quran. China is too far for the poor Europeans, even further than the journey to Mars!

Pure fantasy. Paris is smart enough to stay out of a civil war thousands of miles away. Tokyo would be wise to do the same.

How does a pilot from JAL, China Eastern Airlines or Air France land and take off abroad? Air traffic control is conducted globally in English. When you work with NATO allies and the JSDF you find their members and especially their officers all speak English.  The pilots of both military's undoubtedly speak English.

In addition the encrypted data links they will use present images on the HUD that pilots understand regardless of language.

Huh? Have you ever heard of French Polynesia and New Caledonia? New Caledonia voted against independence this past year, the third vote against independence in the past ten years and this time the vote was overwhelmingly in favor of remaining part of France. France still has departments in the Pacific and it keeps some military units in the region.

Polynesia isn't Asia. It's closer than Paris but not by much.

Both Polynesia and New Caledonia are part of the Asia-Pacific region as both island chains lie in the Pacific Ocean.

The distance from Papeete to France is about 15,000 km. The distance from Papeete to Japan is about 9,600 km.

@Desert Tortoise That's a good number of words saying that I was correct. lol. So you are suggesting that France is going to mount a military campaign against China from Papeete?

French forces would operate with other allied forces from bases around the region, possibly including their existing departments in the Pacific. During WWII New Caledonia was a major US logistics hub as the local government was not taking orders from the Vichy government in Paris. New Caledonia is not that far from Guadalcanal where the Chinese appear to be setting up shop. Ask yourself why in the context of a war to take Taiwan China would need bases in Guadalcanal. Being able to operate from New Caledonia in particular might become important.

What,New Caledonia ? A base for the French to project their clumsy laughable influence in Asia ? Do they have a runway 2000m at least and aircraft hangers as well over there, they need to build a bigger man made island first, by the way are they going to part their only aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle over there ?

That is interesting !

The French periodically operate Rafale fighters, A400M transports and A330MRTT tankers from Paul Klein Air Base near Noumea. There are maritime surveillance aircraft, army transport helicopters and Navy ASW helicopters there permanently. The ASW helos belong to the frigate stationed at the naval base at Pointe Chalaix. The original air base was constructed by the US Navy during WWII and has a 3250 meter runway. It also serves as the international airport for New Caledonia. Noumea has an outstanding natural harbor that was heavily used by the US Navy during WWII.

OssanAmerica,

To Eastman's questioning why there should be joint military exercises between JSDF and French Air and Space Force, you retorted: to let China know that if it started a war in the Pacific Ocean it would be confronting NATO as well.

There are many defense and security agreements between the U.S. and Pacific nations, but Washington might be thinking these alliances aren't enough to deal with rising China; hence it might be asking NATO to come to its help.

If the theater was confined to the Far East, the U.S. alone with Japan, South Korea and Taiwan playing supporting roles, would be enough to handle the problem. This is the reason why the U.S. is provided with so many bases in Japan free of charge. But if these bases are for NATO as well, why should Japan, Okinawa in particular, take the brunt of it all? What's the meaning of building Futenma's replacement in Henoko, Nago City, Okinawa?
