Last time I checked Pusan was not part of Japan.

"in accordance with" domestic legislation that mandates MSDF vessels fly the flag as their official ensign.

It’s the naval ensign of the JNSDF and not the WWII flag. They’re not the same.

We have more information at our fingertips now than in the history of the species, but isn’t making us any smarter.

If the two images on the Wikipedia page are accurate, the two flags look the same to me. The intention is obvious even if you can point out a small difference.

What flag did they use then, before the JNSDF started using it? Germany has struck rules on this one.

So what?

Of course not, but the JMSDF warship located in Pusan certainly is. You do understand this fundamental point?

I prefer Japan's imperial flag. The colors, the design... Definitely one of the coolest ones ever designed.

"We have more information at our fingertips now than in the history of the species, but isn’t making us any smarter."

lol. If you think people aren't getting "any smarter" without POLITICIZED, SKEWING CORPORATIONS AND CORPORATE MEDIA'S MANIPULATION having something to do with that...well, you're just not getting any smarter! (Note there isn't a SINGLE person quoted as having an actual problem with this "controversial" decision...it's just the JOURNALIST'S efforts to manufacture a non-story, when not even the President of the Republic of Korea has any objection to voice!

This tempest in a teacup is fabricated by BIASED, PARTISAN MEDIA trying to stir up a story where there isn't one, because they're lazy and because "if it bleeds, it leads".

One wonders if anyone get triggered by the continued German Military's use of the Iron Cross (Eisernes Kreuz), as its own logo and symbol, all in the name of "tradition"? I should hope not! But here we are. "Controversial" smear accomplished.

The British continue to fly their Union Jack and Royal Ensign flags even after being used in colonizing the world.

How the rising sun flag is being received in Korea today.

The JMSDF ensign is only "controversial" to those who harbor a perpetual hatred of all things Japan. And none of those people ever fought Japan in WWII as an enemy.

The navies of the US, UK, Austr, Canada, France, India, Phillipines, Indonesia, Vietnam, etc etc etc all have no issues with the flag. And the major navies conduct joint exercises with the JMSDF ships flying that flag. These are nations that actually fought Japan or were invaded by them in WWII.

Today the South Korean government amd navy have no issue with the flag. Time for some people shed their fake righteousness and grow up.

Right, you listen to the government and military, or be silent. Common people do not have the right to an opinion.

Well, that flag was once Korea's enemy. They should be glad and proud it is now one of their strongest allies' .

In post-World War II Germany, public display or use of Nazi symbols such as the Hakenkreuz is punishable with sedition, except for academic reasons. However, there is no prohibition on private property, personal possession, and thoughts. In the EU, there are no specific laws prohibiting it.

Koreans equate the rising sun flag with Hakenkreuz, but there is no law prohibiting the rising sun flag, even in South Korea.

In 2011, Korean soccer players gave an excuse for performing monkey performances against Japan, saying that they performed because they could see the rising sun flag.

Only a few Koreans are making a fuss about this issue, which cannot be called a problem.

The Allied Powers that fought in World War II, the colonized Asean countries and Taiwan did not have such problems.

Since before 2011, Japanese Self-Defense Forces ships have been calling at South Korean ports many times while flying the Rising Sun flag.

If Koreans don't like it, they ignore international customs and treaties, ignore even the chronological order, and start anti-Japanese activities.

England, Spain, France, The Dutch, Portugal and the US colonized plenty of places - Asia, Africa, South America, Pacific islands. British colonial rule was responsible for over 100 million deaths in India alone over 40 years.

And yet, they fly their ensigns.

Scott Adams has a good take on this sort of situation. He gave as an example an American southerner who likes the Confederate flag. He said that you can fly the Confederate flag but not in a public space if it offends your neighbors so much. A flag is just a symbol and you don't need to have it in public space if it offends other people to such an extreme extent. If you like the symbol so much then fly it in your home.
