WOW!! From 5 to 12 !!
2.4 fold increase!
The horror!
Someone confiscate their floppy disks and fax machines!
virusrex
And what has stopped the police to implement those measures before?
muzukashi
To serve and to protect! Is that really stressful job? If so change another job!
Lindsay
Drink driving is rampant in Japan. If the j-cops got serious about it they could pay off the national debt in six months.
Yrral
Whom make laws in Japan the village idiot, drunk driving is a criminal offense in all states in the US and for a police to be drunk would be arrested and fired
albaleo
Is that really for driving while drunk or driving while over the limit? I think there is a difference.
Paul
They are human after all and there will be malfunctions! But the punishment should be more severe than for ordinary citizens.
Fighto!
Let's not try and minimise these serious crimes that endanger the public - and damage trust in the police.
Even 1 case is too many.

Must be embarrassing. Wanting to be a police officer, all that hard work and then getting fired for drink driving or filming upskirts.

Join enkai or be jailed. Or join and be jailed.

How hopeless are the cops in this country?
TrevorPeace
The numbers are insignificant relative to Japan's population, BUT, that said, cops shouldn't be drinking and driving. And I agree with @albaleo, there is a real difference between drunk driving and driving while over the blood-alcohol legal limit, WHEREVER you live.
Yubaru
These numbers by themselves seem overly dramatic when one's takes a look at the fact that there are a bit over what, 300,000 officers in Japan
Meaning that 0.004% of cops here got DUIs.
Talk about "drama queen"
gaijintraveller
I don't suppose it would be possible for the police to find out where the alcohol checks are before they go out for a drink. Of course, if they crash or cause an accident, they could be tested after that.
Sean
The math is correct. There are 289,100 serving police in Japan. 12 DUI cases.
To calculate the percentage, you would divide 12 by 289,100 and then multiply the result by 100.
12 / 289,100 ≈ 0.0000415
0.0000415 * 100 ≈ 0.00415%
Therefore, 12 out of 289,100 is approximately 0.00415%.

and ZERO put in jail?
you would also think 117 of those 117 would've been fired.
Are there any standards for being a cop in Japan?
I mean other than being able to breathe and walk?
Yrral
One drunk police is one two many, when they can ruin others lives by showing poor judgement, not like they an clerk that make a mistake
BertieWooster
Blimey, what with taking upskirt pics and driving drunk, our boys in blue are having a whale of a time!

Folks, sorry if I offended some of you with my post above. It was intended to mock the way MSM reports things and not meant to mock the Japanese police. (ok, I may have been slightly carried away by the floppy disk & fax machine remarks)
You see, I KNOW that Japanese police are still some of the best behaved in the world.
But when the media takes an increase of 5 cases to 12 cases and makes headlines like "Police officer drunk driving cases in Japan up over 2-fold for Jan-June", I can't help but make fun of the media.
It's like, you take only 2 women and ask them if they have been abused and only 1 of them says 'yes' and the other says 'no' and that she is perfectly happy with her man, .... the media will claim "50% of women have been abused! The other 50% won't admit it !" .... when in truth, they only asked 2 women.
So, I was really just mocking the way the media reports things.
Yes, an increase of 12 cases from 5 is indeed a 2.4 fold increase. rolls eyes

I always find it funny how this country has such a strict attitude towards ‘drugs’, but sees alcohol and cigarettes as totally fine, not drugs at all, have as much as you like, move on - nothing to see here.
Yubaru
I can introduce you to a doctor I know. I am sure he can help you out!

The police are supposed to lead by example in communities. They certainly do here: nobody gives a toss about red traffic lights, let alone the amber ones; seat belts?! Phh! Public drunkenness and ‘public nuisance’ crimes…
Strangerland
Your logic is 'nothing other should be done, until everything has been fixed.'
If people followed that logic, nothing would ever get done. Ever.

It is a sorry day when one cannot even trust a police officer not to be drunk whilst driving. But saying that, I have often wondered just how many drivers actually do drink and drive....but never get caught. The number must be in the countless thousands. As someone who has never drank alcohol, or even tasted it, I have seen the after affects of drinking, usually at my Uni. It is horrible and nasty, and to think that there are people who value lives so little, that they are prepared to take them through drink driving is abhorrent. The punishments for it are way to low....in every country.
Yubaru
Sounds rather "holier than thou" kind of attitude and thinking. Judgmental as hell!
12 cops out of nearly 300,000. Odds are your colleagues have a higher probability of being a drunk driver than any cop, and what makes it worse is that "teachers" particularly Uni one's are looked up to and are highly respected people in Japan.
Get off the "high horse" and realize that cops are people too, and over 99% of them DONT drink and drive.
Bet you can't say the same about your colleagues!
Spidey
Is there no criminal liability involved? You know...like there is for everyone else?
Just a slap on the wrist and you're on your way?
