I got into gardening last year. Started off with perennials to make sure I can actually keep them alive and this year started on seasonal flowers. Next year I will try growing some veg. It's really quite therapeutic and interesting trying to figure out which spot is the best for certain plants.

Good thing Oz has some of the strictest gun control laws.

It is just as well Australia has strict gun control and something targeted and rare like this happens, rather than say, a fatal shooting over a cinema seat.......

Posted in: Abandoned houses providing new source of valuable old timber See in context

You can see this in the data. There were 859,000 new houses built last year. For perspective, Japan produced more new houses last year than it did new Japanese people (fewer than 800,000 births).

In a country with a rapidly shrinking population that already literally has more houses than it knows what to do with, it makes no sense at all for so many new houses to be built. Yet they are.

The houses need to be where people need/want to be though and the population has shifted.

Many old houses will be left to rot on plots that are not so much in demand for resale because the associated annual owners tax is cheaper if there is a building on the land rather than if there is not.

I have little faith that these monsters will get a proper, fitting sentence. Someone like Ghosn however has the full force of the Japanese 'justice' system and government after him for his 'despicable' crimes and would have the book thrown at him.

Hope this article makes clear the Indonesian perspective on Japan's role in WWII in that country.

Actually no it doesn't. It does make clear that 1,000 or so Japanese soldiers who stayed on after WW2 (probably for a woman) helped fight for independence though, which is interesting.

I get what you're saying. When I read the article and saw he only joined in April I was also thinking it might be wise to have a longer non-lethal weapon training period. The guy obviously wasn't very disciplined if he only intended to shoot 1 person but shot 3.

Jimizo, before I came to Japan I only really knew of American beer being Bud n piss like that, so never drank it but for the last 15 years or so I've fallen in love with US style IPAs. Fortunately whenever I go back to the UK there seems to be a lot more of a choice of them now, both imported and domestically produced.

Posted in: Speed demons: The 'uriko' beer vendors of Japanese baseball See in context

In Britain the beer is served much warmer, and barely has any head at all. Not acceptable in Japan or in the US.

That is not actually quite true. Cask ale should be served between 11-13c so no matter what country you are in, if you're drinking a cold real ale they ain't keeping or serving it properly. If you order a pint of lager or US style beer in Britain, it's served chilled just as in any other country.

@Moonraker There's apparent science to the head of the beer in that it keeps the beer carbonated longer, hence the three-finger sized head here.

On this rare occasion I will scoff at science but if you want to nurse your half glass of beer then by all means fill the other half with foam. Personally my beer isn't in the glass long enough to need to be kept carbonated.

Good, man invented religion and it's a COS. People should think and care more about what really affects life and death........the earth and natures cycles, which is all right there in front of us. Most people have become so detached from nature that we are destined to destroy ourselves.

Posted in: Foreign tourists pick top 10 inconveniences about traveling in Japan See in context

Japan’s lack of public trash cans is something visitors have been grumbling about for decades. Oddly enough, it’s more or less a non-issue for locals. Japan generally finds it unmannerly to eat while walking, so most snacks are consumed either at the store where they were purchased (and where trash can usually be thrown away) or at home, and on those occasions that Japanese people are going to be eating in a park or something, it’s a decision they usually make with the understanding that they’re going to need to carry their trash home with them.

People do not really expect to take their rubbish home with them do they, there are convenience stores with rubbish bins everywhere...

AntiquesavingToday  12:02 pm JST

I have thin, now balding curly caucasian hair, no Japanese barber or hairdresser has the slightest idea what to do.

Need to find someone soon at a reasonable price, not the Azabu salons that are far from my place and cost a fortune just to cut a few cm.

Do yourself a favour, buy some clippers (balikan) and sort it out yourself. A few years ago I started off just giving myself buzz cuts of varying lengths but have since taught myself to do different styles, it's easy.
