A man arrested for allegedly licking a tabletop soy sauce bottle at a conveyer-belt sushi restaurant in Nagoya and then posting a video of the act online

What really worrying is not the one who posted their act online, those who are not posted online that the real worry.

Good.

Hope he goes to jail the disgusting sod!

There is this culture in Japan. It starts with elementary school boys licking the mouthpieces of musical instruments (recorders) of girls they like or don’t like.

Yoshino apparently thought he too should jump on the bandwagon when he engaged in the act as social media got awash with similar prank videos, according to his lawyer Kenichi Tamura.

Good! He knew he shouldn't, but because everyone else was doing it, he thought he could get away with it!

I really doubt that there’s any applicable law against licking a soy sauce bottle. Formally it might be counted a willful damage to property. That means he has to pay for the sauce or provide a replacement in same kind , size and quality. That’s all to it jurisdictional. Of course there’s the much bigger damage to the image of the business and consequences of customers churn, additional all the costs for afterwards now needed security and safety measures and other investments to keep the business model. But that’s difficult to put all on him alone and of course would be in a dimension he surely couldn’t pay off. The bigger part therefore will just be not considered and remains a common business risk burden.

Destruction of property is an applicable law. You doubt it, then confirm it? Curious argument.

That means he has to pay for the sauce or provide a replacement in same kind , size and quality.

"Replace what you damaged" is not the punishment for destruction of property. It's imprisonment for not more than 3 years, a fine of not more than 300,000 yen, or a petty fine, depending on the court's decision. (Japanese penal code, article 261).

Of course there’s the much bigger damage to the image of the business (...) But that’s difficult to put all on him alone and of course would be in a dimension he surely couldn’t pay off. The bigger part therefore will just be not considered

Of course it will be considered, that's exactly what the guy is now indicted for. Where do you get the idea that just because the culprit may not be able to pay the punishment it should "naturally" go unpunished?

I really hope they record his arrest procedure and put that video on social media for everyone to see.

now, THAT would get him his little “likes” for sure.

the thing with this punk, wasn’t so much his video, but that he had one of those faces and hair styles that make you want to swiftly kick said person in the head.

I think that angered me more than his ignorant act. Something about those fools with punchable arrogant mugs…..

He did it to get attention and got more than he bargained for. I bet he wishes he could turn the clock back now.

The whole point of these idiotic actions is to post them online, so I don't think you need to worry about the rare cases of people who don't.

Come down hard and don't let him off easily. He's twenty-one and definitely should know better so give him a harsh sentence. That would do the trick by sending a message to any other fool who is even thinking about doing this kind of disgusting stunt. They'll have to think about the metal bars and prison warden in their immediate future.

Anyone else feel the same?

Not really, but I can see that some people would. Without going too much on a psychology tangent, people tend to overreact to small probability events and underreact to large probability events. The probability that your table had a vapid video blogger with slight sociopathic tendencies sitting before you is very small. So small, I would argue, that there's a higher probability of getting bad food.

After all, if you're going to a restaurant, you always need to advance some amount of trust in the business, the chef, and the food.

Also, while restaurants announced big consequences in the handling of condiments and such ... I haven't really seen any. Except for 餃子の王将 having removed plates and condiments from the table, but they are brought out as soon as you sit down. (And I'm particularly happy that 松屋 has not removed the big community beni shoga pot.)

Throw the book at him. Make an example of him.

is he just a silly chap and maybe a really bad egg, only time will tell.

How about public endangerment? He could pass on any number of diseases in his saliva. Who knows if he is or is not infected by anything at the time he did it, be it the common cold, flu or covid as examples of things spread in saliva. Ebola is also spread in bodily fluids.

I would let the guy off with a soft warning and maybe some community service at the most extreme sentence.

So glad the perpetrators of such mischief seem to all be Japanese... What if they were gaijin? I dare not imagine.

I hope they don’t have these spy cameras in cake shops. I often lick the last drop of cream off the plate after I am finished if it was really delicious.

Sentence this miscreant to 40 years of licking stamps at the post office

How random.

No more going to Kura sushi or any of restaurants that has self services where there is potential to contaminate

There is "potential to contaminate" in every restaurant. To avoid that you would have to bring your own food and cutlery. But then the table might be "contaminated", you never know. No, it's really no use, you will just have to stay at home from now on.

nosuke

I agree, mind you their standards are not so great and I noticed they have fallen further the last few years. I’ll stick to the local family run ones already Toriton when I visit Sapporo.

There's a TV show that appears to insinuate that the guy only did that because he copies acts from other countries.

In the end, it's still the gaijin's fault.

Anyone remember in Martin Scorsese's 'Casino' what happened when they caught a guy cheating at cards and security brought him into the back room to deal with it? That's what the sushi restaurants should do.

"You're a righty? Well now you're gonna have to learn how to squirt stuff on sushi with your left hand."
