I suppose if one only reads the news about Japan's crimes, it would seem your comment is valid.
However, there has been a series of stabbings just in NYC recently that easily outnumber such crimes in the whole of Japan.
So I think the answer to your question is, No.

Regarding this article, I have seen this news on TV and I hope this many gets help, however - over the course of the last few months, I have observed a notable trend of downvotes on comments discussing Japan and its reported rise in crime. I find myself perplexed by the reasoning behind these downvotes, as it appears to be a response to the dissemination of factual information about crime in the country. Various articles addressing this topic have surfaced, and the habit of frequently comparing crime rates between Japan and America may not be conducive to fostering safety in Japan. Rather than perpetuating such comparisons, it is imperative that we confront the genuine reality of the crime situation in Japan, acknowledging it as it truly is, in order to address the underlying issues and work collectively towards promoting a safer and more secure society.

Those folks you describe would be critical enough to want to know the facts rather just running off impressions from how many news stories they have seen. Crime statistics are publicly available and can be found with a simple Google search.
And if you want to talk about Japan exceptionalists, let's not leave out the "Japan is much worse than everyone thinks" crowd who leap at every crime or incident and extrapolate that to all of Japan going heck in a handbasket.
