I really don't understand people's desire to travel to a spot they saw on some TV show, movie or anime. Just like all the tourists flooding to the spot in Kanagawa to take a picture of the train line with the ocean in the background, but causing major headaches for drivers and the train company!

Abe234,

The suit also claims the footage caused its parent company's market capitalization to fall by more than 16 billion yen from Jan 30 to 31.

I think this is a considerable amount of money to lose, not a drop in a bucket! The company has every right to go after him and his family.

Posted in: At least 130,000 bank accounts affected by latest My Number ID card issue See in context

This system is so screwed up, and the people who are there to assist citizens to sign up don't know what the hell they are doing. The biggest problem with this bank account snafu is that they didn't tell people that babies, infants etc. needed their won bank account to set up the MN card. So parents just assumed that they could link their children's MN to their own account. Now the gov't says no no. Each person needs to have their own bank account to receive payments. But the staff at the city halls didn't inform people of that! What a mess.

Just like the PGA has been bought and paid for by the Saudis, Mr. Macron is owned by the Chinese. How in any way is opening a liaison office in Tokyo going to complicate matters regarding Russia Ukraine and China?

It seems like Saukurai Sho is trying to tap dance around the problem. Let's talk about it, but don't investigate too deeply or really talk to those who were affected as they have started a new life. What the hell does that even mean? A full and thorough investigation is necessary, but the powers that be will not let that happen. Even from the grave Johnny controls Japanese media!

Sometimes I just have to shake my head and ask what my country is doing. Are they trying to make themselves the laughing stock of the world? With so many bigger problems facing Canadians like affordable housing, the attack on our medical system, climate problems like wild fires, and they decide to put labels on individual cigarettes? Oh Canada!

I don't have a problem paying a toll to use the road, it is the high price. I loved it when the old DPJ were in power and they cut the price to all you could drive for either Y1000, or Y2000. It was fantastic, the roads were busy, they rest areas were booming, and I think a lot of people were getting out and discovering new places. Alas, these LDP cronies only see yen signs and want to soak the people for all they can get.

Moonraker, they have no choice! At least it seems high school teachers are able to duck out of the club activity as it is run by the students themselves, but in elementary and junior high, they must be present daily and of course on weekends and national holidays.

Posted in: Kishida orders ¥3.5 trillion to be set aside for child care See in context

Just throwing money at the problem will not make it go away. There have to be a million reforms and cultural changes if they want to increase the birthrate. Allow parents to go home at reasonable times during the work week. Don't have mass group holidays that make it much more expensive to travel. Don't force children to have to buy super expensive "randoseiru" when a simple back pack would suffice. Those are just a few, but they will never happen, so Japan says "here take money and have babies"!

Already we have been told that Kishida is thinking of calling a snap election, also he is under fire for his son's stupid actions taking pictures in the PM's residence, so this is all just a way to get rid of one problem and gin up support for the upcoming election. There is nothing KIshida can do or say to Kim that will change anything.

These so called Activist Funds are just like all the other slash and burn investment companies in the US. Buy a company, strip it of whatever is good, sell it off for a huge profit, leave the struggling part to wither and fall into bankruptcy forcing many out of jobs, but by then they have made their huge profits and have moved on to other targets. I hope Japanese investors will not agree with this style of business.

Interesting isn't it. When all the safety restrictions were lifted and now more and more people are not masking, we are seeing a dramatic rise in the this "new cold". And people are self medicating, but there is a shortage of all kinds of OTC medicine just like what happened in the West last year. Gee, I wonder what it could be?

Government efforts to bring down fuel costs took some pressure off the index. Without government subsidies, wholesale prices would have gained 6.5 percent, according to the BOJ.

So even though the gov't is paying subsidies, we are still paying for it with higher taxes, more debt. For the love of god start the nuclear power plants and give us poor consumers a break. Oh, and by the way, don't forget to buy your EV! With electricity prices increasing by 25% what could go wrong!

I'm amazed at the ignorance of some people who post here. No, she is not freeloading off her parents, and doing nothing, they are living together as is the custom in Japan for the oldest son and his family to take care of the parents. And trusts me there are a lot of old Japanese men that think they are to be treated as an emperor by the daughter-in-law! She must do all the cooking, cleaning, raise children all the while answering to their beck and call. No wonder many women don't want to marry the eldest son as they know what awaits them!

I agree with all the above comments about the ridiculous airfares that ANA is charging. Was looking at a ticket home which I could always get for Y150~160K, this summer the cheapest ANA has is Y350K. While I understand that the yen is weaker and oil is higher, double the price is out of control. Just like the Tokyo hotels I red about doubling their room rates, this is a way to try and recover all the money they feel they lost during the pandemic!

Posted in: S Korean president's office defends his viral Japan comments See in context

Two things. First I respect this South Korean president for being thoughtful and forward thinking, realizing that just complaining about the past and villainizing Japan does nothing for either country, all the while knowing that it is not politically advantageous back home. I wish Japan would be a little more accommodating towards South Korea and try to help smooth relations between the two countries, that will ensure that the relationship continues to grow and strengthen. But as we saw a few days ago, many of the top gov't officials were at Yasukuni shrine offering gifts, which always antagonizes Korea and Japan. Just cool it a bit guys!

Posted in: Japan's dairy industry in crisis See in context

I'm sorry but this article is full of it. So the author who writes about a butter shortage in 2008, and then directly jumps to 2020 as is for 12 years farmers were not making record money as the price of butter was skyrocketing. He just states that then corona happened and it was Armageddon. While I will admit fodder prices have increased, almost everything in Japan has returned to normal. Kids are back in school, so there are school lunches, people are back eating out, and tourists are here eating more. So farmers had a hard time for a while, who didn't. The whole dairy industry has been protected and allowed to produce what they want and we consumers are stuck eating and paying what they charge. No, I'm not buying it.

I will be honest, I had never really heard of shut-ins like this until I moved to Japan. It is very sad that such a large number of people have either been bullied, or suffer from mental illness that does not allow them to take part in everyday society. This is also a huge burden on their parents/families, and in the long run all of society.
