McDonald’s Japan adds flavor of okonomiyaki to menu for limited time

McDonald’s is continually surprising its customers in Japan with some unusual regional-exclusives, and its latest release is yet another showstopper, as it takes the chain’s ever-popular Teriyaki McBurger and gives it several regional upgrades for a limited time.

▼ The new trio of burgers is called the “Otona no Gotouchi Teriyaki” (“Adult’s Regional Teriyaki“)

The three regions starring in this limited-time release are Hokkaido, Osaka, and Hakata, with each one featuring the flavour of a famous local specialty from that region. So let’s take a look at the lineup below.

▼ Hokkaido Jaga Butter Teriyaki (450 yen)

“Jaga Butter” — short for “Jagaimo Butter” which literally translates to “potato butter” — is the Japanese term for a baked potato with butter. It’s particularly famous up in Hokkaido, Japan’s premier potato-producing region, and now it’s been whipped up into a sauce and added to a Teriyaki McBurger, with lettuce and cheddar cheese providing some fresh contrast. Combined with the teriyaki-slathered pork patty, this burger is said to have a mellow flavour profile that will appeal to a wide variety of tastes.

Okonomiyaki, or savoury pancake, originally hails from the Kansai region in and around Osaka, and there are two main styles depending on whether it’s made in Osaka or Hiroshima. According to okonomiyaki aficionados, one of the main differences between the two styles is that the Osaka version contains mayonnaise while the Hiroshima version doesn’t, as it has a tangier sauce that doesn’t pair well with mayonnaise.

This central difference is one that McDonald’s is keen to acknowledge in this burger, saying it contains Osaka okonomiyaki-style mayo sauce flavored with eggs, sea lettuce and red pickled ginger to make it taste like you’re “eating okonomiyaki in Osaka”.

▼ Hakata Mentai Teriyaki Chicken (450 yen)

The final burger in the series pairs a teriyaki chicken patty with Hakata Mentai Mayo Sauce to create a blend that’s as good looking as it is addictive. Hakata mentaiko, otherwise known as Hakata Mentai, is pollock roe marinated in chilli peppers, and it’s a famous specialty in Fukuoka, the prefecture in which Hakata is the capital. The sauce has a spicy kick that pairs well with the salty sweet flavors of teriyaki.

▼ During the campaign period, there’ll also be a Teriyaki Muffin (340 yen) on the morning menu until 10:30 a.m.

Those looking for a new side for their burgers will want to try the Nagoya Meibutsu Tebasaki Aji (Nagoya Specialty Chicken Wings Flavour), a 40-yen seasoning for fries filled with the taste of Nagoya’s famous wings, which are deep-fried and coated with sweet soy sauce.

Rounding off the new products are two drinks — the McFizz Setouchi Lemonade (from 270 yen) and the McFloat Setouchi Lemonade (from 340 yen for a small), which contain lemon juice from Setouchi, Japan’s premier lemon-producing region.

To help promote the new Regional Teriyaki burgers, McDonald’s will be airing a commercial on national television from June 27, starring actors Joe Odagiri and Kumiko Aso. In the clip, the two are pictured inside a dekotora truck, waxing lyrical about how the McDonald’s Teriyaki McBurger has changed so much over the years. The conversation about burgers changing and their feelings about it acts as an analogy for their own relationship, which looks to be reigniting after years apart, now that the two characters have reunited as adults.

It’s a fun way to grab the attention of adults looking for a change to the usual Teriyaki McBurger, and the new range will be on the menu at McDonald’s branches around Japan from June 28 until the end of July.

These all look ghastly and to be honest I would call all of them an abomination. There seems to be much promotion of this type of cuisine lately, I find it queer

Dont forget if you eat these products too often you may well become obese which leads to diabetes, heart failure and ultimately an early death

If I want the taste of okonomiyaki, I will eat okonomiyaki.

A. Hokkaido Jaga Buttter

B. Osaka Okonomiyaki Sauce

C Hakata Mentai(ko)

I can't remember the last time I've eaten a McDonald's burger but if forced to choose I'm going with B.

I generally don’t eat beef or any fried food (I don’t want to get diabetes and experience a sudden early death), but I’m kind of peckish now for mentaiko.

How can we forget? We get reminded every time one of these SoraNews articles appears!

McTrash will exploit any food culture for a few bucks.

Must be something in the secret sauce that makes me wanna go back. Or is it the fries? I'm gonna do A then B and then C. MD is crap back home and more expensive so enjoy while I can.

Eating beef is not the cause of diabetes.

But, it's crap here, too.

All three look pretty terrible, as do most McD limited-time burgers. The only half-way decent burger-related items there are the plain hamburger/cheeseburger (including double versions), Big Mac, and Samurai burgers. The ebi and fish filet-o aren't too terrible, either. Their chicken "burgers" are all terrible, and the McNuggets are just formed chicken by-product. Grotesque.

Some of their breakfast ("morning mac") items are fairly edible, though. But, they stop serving breakfast so early here, like 10 or 1030. In the US, it usually goes to 11 or 1130.

True — actually a cause of colorectal cancer. Fried food, however, leads to fatty liver disease in some people. But that wasn’t actually my point. My real point is that the occasional burger won’t kill you. I’ve had burgers in parts of seven decades, and I’m fine. Might try the mentaiko thing tomorrow!

Looks like a sign of desperation. Profits must be down, and why wouldn't they be? Even here, people are very slowly starting to wake up to the fact that this franchise, and most like them, are utter s... !

Let's eat real food people. Don't be so lazy. Throw a few things together in your kitchen for 10 minutes and you'll end up with something better than that. You don't have to be a genius. You'll save a bit of money too. Come ON...!

So judgemental, Dr. There are plenty of reasons to treat yourself to an occasional Big Mac. It doesn't make one lazy.

Why not do both? If you want to eat McDonald's, then do so. Just not every day. If you want to cook at home, do that too. I would say that, especially these days, cooking one meal for one person at home wouldn't necessarily be that much cheaper than a meal from McD's.

Goes on to describe a wide range of menu items they enjoy, including breakfast timetables. You sure it's 'crap?'

Yes, a bit on the judgmental side. Sorry if it grates on you. I admit to having a cheeseburger and fries on very rare occasions as well. But the point stands. It is s... food, and we should all try to live the best possible life.

(Of greater concern than personal health, the damage to the planet of beef production has to be addressed, but I don't want to get into all that now.)

I beg to differ. I cook on a regular basis, with healthy, fresh ingredients, plus plenty of traditional Japanese items, plus kimchi, nuts, whatever takes your fancy. People lack imagination. Supplement this with tiny bits of, for example, tinned fish. One small can might spread to 3 meals, if you just use it for a bit of "taste". Throw in plenty of rice or soba/udon/lentils/couscous etc. to go with it and you have something cheap and nutritious. Try it! Cooking doesn't have to be a chore.

You do you, doc.

But the point stands. It is s... food, and we should all try to live the best possible life.

Sure. Not the best food. But part of my best life is sitting down with a cheeseburger and a coke on occasion. It makes a nice change from my usual, pretty strict diet, sleep and exercise regime.

Sure, but you can say that for meat in any form, from a fast food burger to Wagyu beef.

I put myself through college and three years travelling through Europe cooking in professional kitchens. Some pretty nice ones, too. I love cooking, and can cook a meal for myself that costs much more than a Big Mac set, or one - nutritious and delicious - for much cheaper. For example, the potato dauphinois I made last night will last at least until tomorrow evening (longer if I freeze it), so that cost is spread over more than one meal.

My point is that, while you certainly shouldn't eat McD's every day - or week, whatever, there's nothing wrong with eating it occasionally if you want to.

I agree. As I said, I'll have a cheeseburger & fries once in a while. So we're basically on the same page, by the looks of it. (Both slightly bored tonight, possibly?)

All the best to you.
