Look at England specifically, the landmass of the island is similar to Japan

Japan is THREE TIMES bigger than England.

Both great games to watch though.

Fox News business people could choose to spread election lies and insist, as court documents indicate, that it made good business sense to do so because much of their audience did not want the actual truth about that topic.

That's the standard issue in a nutshell.

The audience couldn't handle the truth.

It doesn't matter how the bomb is delivered; by hand, by truck, by SU27 or by B52.

Bombing civilian targets is terrorism. But not long ago this would have been reported as "neutralising an insurgent", with the 25 injured "collateral damage".

According to police, there were over 13,000 accidents involving cyclists in Tokyo last year, making up about 46% of traffic accidents in the metropolis

This directive will not reduce that shocking percentage one iota. It may even nudge it up. Reducing fatalities is a noble cause of course but simply enforcing the existing laws that affect cyclists would have a far greater effect.

It's too bad no one in Afghanistan tried to fight against the Taliban to keep their society peaceful.

On the contrary Afghans have been fighting the Taliban since 1992. Today, former members of the Afghan national army have allied with Islamic State (remember them?) to try to kick the Taliban out of Khorasan. Given the choice of Taliban or ISKP, the west is surreptitiously supporting the former in return for guarantees that they'll support US efforts to complete the Trans Afghanistan Pipeline, thus undermining another common enemy: Iran.

Complex, isn't it?

With every sanction we push Russia further in to the arms of China.

We expected the Russian economy to contract by 12% last year due to our sanctions (Biden even said it was on track to halve) but in reality it only dropped 2.1% and the IMF even expects it to grow this year. Meanwhile China is rolling in cheap gas and oil from their neighbour to the north and Russians are trading in their (unserviceable) European SUVs for SAIC, Dongfeng and Geely products. Xi is rubbing his hands in glee.

@Shimazaki-san,

Wishma's ex-boyfriend has not confessed to abusing her, thus her claims are considered "unsubstantiated".

Also, as you now know, she tried to go home to Sri Lanka. When this proved impossible she had two choices:

Stay in prison

Apply for asylum with chance of release

She took the second option. Would you have chosen differently?

Posted in: Video of Sri Lankan who died in detention to be shown in court See in context

Wishma arrived in Japan in 2017 as a student but was taken into custody at the immigration facility in August 2020 for overstaying her visa

More accurately:

In August 2020, Wishma went to a police station in Shimizu, Shizuoka, to seek shelter from her boyfriend's domestic violence, only to be sent to a detention facility run by the Nagoya Regional Immigration Services Bureau. This was despite a 2008 directive from Japan's Immigration Bureau to its facilities to treat domestic violence victims with appropriate care and possibly grant them residency.

Wishma stated that she wanted to return to Sri Lanka, but she was put on a waiting list as she could not afford a flight home as commercial flights were unavailable due to the COVID-19 pandemic. After receiving threats from her ex and being offered potential accommodation from a supporter, she decided to ask to stay in Japan, and applied for provisional release on January 4, 2021, which was rejected on February 16.

DT,

The fastest growing brand in the UK for two years running is MG. And not one of those cars came from Longbridge.

The Transit was THE van of choice for tradesmen for decades, but has lost that market to the MB Sprinter and Renault Traffic since the turn of the millennium. As for the Transit Connect, the original Turkish never made money and the current one is a rebranded VW Caddy: the only Ford parts are the badges.

Ford can only make money on pick up trucks in their unfairly protected home market. They had the best selling cars in the UK for decades (Fiesta and Focus) yet still failed to turn a profit in that market. Now both models have been canned, as have the factories in Bridgend and Dagenham. With Opel and Jeep now belonging to Stellantis the American withdrawal from Europe is almost complete.

Meanwhile the fastest growing brands are, you guessed it, Chinese. The tide has turned.

Posted in: Japanese Ferrari designer gets suspended term for speeding See in context

rcch,

Japan ranks 16th in the world with a deaths/km driven rate slightly worse than the USA, but twice as bad as European nations - which have far higher speed limits by the way.

The biggest contribution to this disparity is roundabouts vs traffic lights. It's almost impossible to have a head on collision on the former, but the latter positively encourages the most dangerous accident you can have.

As for Japan's decrease in deaths since the '60s, cracking down on drink driving in the '90s had a reasonable effect, but by far the greatest factor is increased inherent safety in cars sold. Better brakes, seatbelts, stability control and construction. The rest is just gravy.

Posted in: Boeing bids farewell to an icon, delivering its last 747 jumbo jet See in context

My uncle flew these in the '70s, first for BA, then as an instructor at SIA; I even got to ride up front at age 9 all the way to Changi. Then, in the '90s, these were the queens of domestic flights between Haneda and Fukuoka - two planes taking off in each direction every single hour of the day. Of course, for a 90 minute flight they hardly had to load any fuel so they took off light. Very light, which made for an impressive power to weight ratio on and a shocking rate of climb when the pilots could get away with it.

The 787 and 350 are incredible aircraft, quiet, economical and comfy. But the 747 is majestic.
