Posted in: As e-bikes proliferate, so do deadly fires blamed on exploding lithium-ion batteries See in context

Because of the fire hazard, some residential buildings have banned e-bikes. Last summer, the New York City Housing Authority sought to prohibit tenants in all of its 335 developments from keeping or charging e-vehicles in their units, only to back down a few months later after protests from delivery workers.

Not good. Those NYCHA buildings are already old fire traps and don't need any more hazards.

Got more than my fill of "tourist hot spots" years ago. When they start taxing the shoreline walkways, beaches and pubs, then I'll have to throw up my hands and utter a few harrumphs in frustration.

Kill your own kid and dump him by the roadside like trash for the cleanup crew to find. Must have been some serious problems in that household. Seeing the word "unemployed" in the article leads me to a certain suspicion but I'll wait and see. Probably won't be a follow-up article though.

I once dived from 5 meters at Toshimaen. Not knowing how the art form was supposed to be properly done, instead of going in feet first, I did a chest and belly buster. The whole way home I felt like Hannibal Lecter had sliced me open like he did that sheriff in "Silence of the Lambs." Last time I ever attempted a foolish stunt like that.

Good thing this was updated right away so that the commuting workers were easily alerted for alternative ways to go to work. Lucky that I live in Japan where transportation options are endless!

In some downtown metro areas, maybe. I don't live that far from Tokyo but alternative transportation options are by no means endless. There's only one and taxi lines are extremely long even at night and very time and cost prohibitive. If I had to take one to work, my company would not even consider reimbursing me. They just parrot the same thing on the phone every time: "Get here as fast as you can!"

It was a close Tour until the time trial and I was looking for a duel down to the last day but Vingegard just blew away Pogacar and then added even more time on the climb in the next stage to put a stranglehold on the yellow jersey. Pogacar has nothing to be ashamed of because he was in pretty good form but the other guy was in a league of his own.

We may be doomed much earlier than we think. A movie about a doll. The dumbing down is on overdrive.

> There have been movies about dolls since the silent era, one of the very first talkies was about a doll.

> Was Pinnochio ‘woke’ because it had feelings and stuff?

Good points but I was commenting on the fact that they are really hyping this "competition" as if comparing the person (Oppenheimer) to a doll. The 'woke' part you wrote about never entered my mind.

obladiToday 09:19 am JST

First, no team will want to give up a big haul unless they know this guy is staying long-term. Second, pinstripes are heavy. Matsui was able to bear the weight in the biggest moments on the biggest stage but even a Unicorn may not be able to do it. Yankees fans and the New York City media are merciless and Ohtani didn't want to go there when he first got to MLB. I doubt he's changed his mind. The Dodgers, Giants and Padres are the most logical landing spots should a trade occur but why would you trade for him now and what would you be willing to give up? You'd have to give up a mother lode. The Angels are stuck between a rock and a hard place but they aren't winning with him so they would be in the same position regardless. Wait until free agency and give him that massive offer. He leaves and you can still look good to the fan base. He left. We wanted to keep him. He takes whatever heat there is for leaving.

50 years ago is 1973. Who are they using as the originator to set that date, The Last Poets? Gil Scott Heron? Rappers Delight is the Chic Good Times riff, so that won't be till 1978 or 1979.

> As in the comments above, a lot of geniuses in hip-hop, but Jay Z isn't one of them. Chuck D, Q Tip, De La, Dilla, Wu Tang, NWA ....

Agree with you on all that.

Posted in: Rapper's Delight as New York celebrates 50 years of hip-hop See in context

Fifty years has gone by pretty fast. Yesterday, there was the story about Bruce Lee and today we get hip-hop. Both were integral in shaping my adolescence. The list mainly talks about big names but the best years in my opinion were before Jay-Z and the West Coast ever came on the scene. The impromptu DJ events in the streets by then-unknowns (outside of the NYC area) like Grandmaster Flash, Afrika Bambaataa, Grand Wizard Theodore and others were so raw and unique and full of energy, it was a heady time. Kind of like Japan during the bubble years. Uncharted waters never to be seen again.

HONG KONG

Hong Kong businessman W Wong still remembers the day in 1972 when he first heard neighborhood kids rave about a figure who seemed larger than life: Bruce Lee.

I still remember the day in 1972 when I moved to a neighborhood in the South Bronx, in New York City, and all the kids raved about that same larger-than-life figure. I remember all the movies, the nunchucks, the fighting, the admiration and the envy we all had. The devastation I felt at hearing he had died is still there 50 years on. No one comes close to Bruce Lee.
