Yea everyone knows the North just wants the choking sanctions (which are literally starving their people to death) gone, which only serve to provoke and create a volatile situation for normal citizens (while the military cliques and elite profit from arms sales and raising taxes to pay for them).

It's common sense: treat someone well and they will repay the favor. For all his faults Trump was able to broker a situation where all NK missile tests stopped in exchange for putting a halt to US war game exercises.

For long term here I am talking half a century later, North Korea will win the unification war as South Korea birth rate declining very much is the most serious one in Asia. Fewer young people but more and more old people in the south. They just have to wait the South's decimated. But they still have to own ballistic missiles ICBM and nuclear arsenals to tell America don't try to come back. The North Korea must keep up the traditional communists society and giving more birth of children, there must be a generation of North Koreans marching to the south and ruling there with their final victory!

If they are not careful they will lose more to starvation than are born.

Yes, thanks in large part to the choking sanctions which have been placed on them.

When the UN goes into a country it isn't simply to "investigate" the issue, there are a lot of other things tied to their visit, i.e. it sets a precedent to then "investigate" other countries, who may be asked to do certain things in order to "comply"

So this is part of de-escalating tensions, not escalating them.

More threat = de-escalation, yeah right.

This approach is why the North worked to acquire nukes in the first place, and why they continue to test fire missiles.

Not to mention the US has already carpet-bombed the North before and caused massive destruction and suffering.

There is no excuse for behaving like a bully, and we all know Iraq and Afghanistan are still in shambles, yet of course no one amongst the neocon crowd is courageous and honest enough to admit it.

When it is backed up by the rest of the free press in the world, yes.

Numerous examples where it was learned in hindsight that the US media put out false narratives that were lapped up by "the rest of the free press in the world."

The CIA admitted at a Congressional hearing that they had routinely been planting stories in the western press.

Posted in: Chinese warship passed in 'unsafe manner' near US destroyer in Taiwan Strait, military officials say See in context

Out of the same playbook as:

Since the 1991 Gulf War, the U.S. and UK had been attacked by Iraqi air defenses while enforcing Iraqi no-fly zones.[44][45] These zones, and the attacks to enforce them, were described as illegal by the former UN Secretary General, Boutros Boutros-Ghali, and the French foreign minister Hubert Vedrine.

in the sense that although technically the Taiwan Strait may be declared international waters, if [ U.S. and Canadian navies on Saturday were conducting a joint exercise in the strait, which separates the island of Taiwan and China ], then we have something akin to if the Chinese and Russian navies conducted military exercises off the coast of California.

@fatrainfallingintheforest

any of these factors could have triggered the overreaction, and are not known to the casual observer.

True, but so what? If you catch a shoplifter, you call the police. You don't shoot them.

I did point out that it was in fact an overreaction, a subtle yet clear indication of my opinion of the kid getting shot in the back.

That was clearly not the way to go.

However, seeing that this shop has been victimized literally numerous times in a variety of ways, it's obvious that incidents of an unfortunate manner are bound to occur. If he was able to it would have been better if the shop owner had relocated, but there again we don't know if he was mired in debt or what.

Posted in: N Korea willing to talk with Japan, but claims abduction issue resolved See in context

LegrandeToday  08:44 am JST

Can it ever really be resolved? Ask the families and loved ones of those ...

-whose family members were killed by B29 bomber planes in Japan and North Korea, not to mention those who were napalmed in North Korea, Vietnam, Laos, etc.

-whose family members were forcibly conscripted into the Japanese military during WWII

-whose family members died while being used as slave labor by the Jpn govt during WWII

-whose family members were tricked into becoming comfort women for the Jpn military

Etc. Etc.

You are citing events during wartime.

The Japanese were abducted when there was no state of war between Japan and the DPRK. The over 400 South Koreans who have been abducted were taken after 1951 when there was a Truce in place between SK and NK.

A state of war doesn't excuse the actions of Japan, the US, or anyone.

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

Posted in: S Korean president to seek public consent for Fukushima water release See in context

@kennyG

Nope, that part is based on a Korean author. Those Korean academia who studied his statue (although seems not many) know he was not as pro-Japan in real sense as having been treated like that later in SK .

Also, the following is from Korean media Korea JoongAng Daily

First, we cannot say that Lee was a born Japanese sympathizer. He passed a government examination to become a public servant in 1882. During the "days of enlightenment" of Choson, he learned English at Yukyeong Gongwon, the nation's first language school. He served as a charge d'affaires to the United States for two years from 1888. With Yun Chi-ho and Yu Gil-jun, Lee, one of the very few Koreans who could speak English, first was known as pro-American. In 1894, he declined to take office as a charge d'affaires to Japan, citing mourning for his mother. Unlike Song Byeong-jun, a devoted member of a pro-Japanese group, Lee never learned to speak Japanese. Surprisingly, he was the founder of the Independence Club established in 1896.

LOL The Korea JoongAng Daily was created by the conservative chaebol group who support Yoon and Yoon's party. And yes there are conservative academics funded by right-wing conservatives in South Korea as elsewhere.

JoongAng Ilbo is considered by some critics as part of Chojoongdong (Korean: 조중동, CJD), a pejorative term that refers to the three highly circulated conservative newspapers in South Korea including JoongAng Ilbo. The word is an acronym of the ChosunJoong-ang and Dong-a Ilbo newspapers, and the grouping is seen as forming the basis of South Korea's conservative media.[16] The term was used by Hankyoreh editor Jung Yeonju (Korean: 정연주) as early as October 2000.[17] Korean liberals criticize Chojoongdong primarily because of their conservative-biased editorial stances and doing business in a collusive and surreptitious manner.

So yeah you can pretend Korean people view Ye Wanyong as a patriot etc but you'd be very wrong, a fact born out of the conservative Korea JoongAng's desperate attempt to change the narrative with the editorial you referenced (if it was commonly accepted as you said there would be no need for that).
