@Boffington The stars from my location are amazing and there are over 700 species of birds spread throughout the archipelago. I think maybe you haven't been out of the city much.

The concrete everywhere is a huge problem though. The rivers are clean but because of the bloody concrete there are no fish in them.

@La vie douce Yeah, but the in fighting not only involves Japanese. it also involves foreigners which people on Japan Today seem to overlook when talking about the conspiracy to oust Ghosn. Two names that come to mind are Ashwani Gupta and Hari Nada.

Most dogs live indoors and would get bitten when they are out walking, This suit has no hole for a harness and leash. And my dog would probably bite my face off if I tried to put it on him!

Posted in: Young kabuki actor's debut breaks Japanese theater traditions See in context

Ironically Kabuki was originally created and performed by females. You can read about it here-https://www.tokyoweekender.com/art_and_culture/japanese-culture/no-women-kabuki-theater-japan/

@Takaraszuka is a privately funded group so they can do what they want. Although I have a feeling there is a lot of dark stuff going on there that probably will come out sooner or later just like Johnny's jimusho. Shakespeare was 400 years ago. Times have changed and anyone can be in a Shakespeare play.

@Wallace Opera, classical music, ballet-anyone can join. Kabuki is only for males and people from a kabuki family. There lies the problem!

Posted in: Young kabuki actor's debut breaks Japanese theater traditions See in context

@Greenstingray Those subsidized cultural institutions that you mention in the U.S and U.K. are open to all who wish to participate. Kabuki is not!

Cheese, chips and avocado dip for lunch and a half French Kabuki actor is not going to fool us that Kabuki is willing to change. As long as females and those from outside the Kabuki families are not allowed to join I do not see why it should be subsidized by taxpayers.

@Mocheake Would be nice if it was that simple! As long as you don't have a well-paying job no Japanese girl will give a Japanese guy the time of day no matter how good he smells. If you are a foreigner however the specs required are set much lower!

no support facilities for the elderly -

Not entirely true! In Japan there are many support facilities for the elderly but you have to reach out for it. Carers can come to the house or there are day service centres they can attend if they are able. I took care of my mother in law for 2 years and nurses would come to the house a couple of times a week and a doctor once a month. They showed me how to change dressings, change diapers, wash her hair etc. and provided much needed moral support. When you need a respite as carer the hospital would admit them for up to a month. Of course you must pay but most is covered by insurance. But it was not easy because she wasn't a very nice person in many ways. And I think there are a lot of cases like this where people are having to take care for someone (who was a bad or even abusive parent) for whom they have no love or affection.
