Well there you have it. NATO +2 for the war. Would Putin care to make it +3?

22 ( +29 / -7 )

Thanks to Putin making everyone feel unsafe, NATO will keep increasing.

23 ( +32 / -9 )

Good news indeed.

Next up: Ukraine.

And before the fans boos start their reactionary howling, Mini-me did it to himself.

14 ( +24 / -10 )

Good. Now let’s get Ukraine into NATO and the EU.

14 ( +23 / -9 )

America welcomes Sweden into the fray. I can understand why putin is angry at NATO, however what puntin wanted to feel safe was and is ridiculous. You cannot have it all putin. You are to blame. Not NATO.

9 ( +20 / -11 )

EPD,one trillion to one it will not happen in the US,if so why has introduced a resolution for Ukrainain ratification to NATO, Ukraine cannot pay it basic bills

-19 ( +5 / -24 )

Good, though it should have happened earlier, Turkey has behaved despicably and it’s whole attitude has been at variance to the whole concept of NATO.

ukraine undoubtedly must be a member of NATO, whether dropping the MAP or not is the appropriate route I don’t know enough about it to say.

5 ( +12 / -7 )

Good. Now let’s get Ukraine into NATO and the EU so we can get this WW III party started!

-16 ( +8 / -24 )

Yrral

That's why we need to send them aid.

6 ( +14 / -8 )

Fizzbit, that why the US Senate would never ratifiy Ukraine, they are a liability

-17 ( +3 / -20 )

englisc aspyrgend

Agreed. Sweden making it a crime to burn the Koran was probably one of the requirements that Turkey gave to get their vote.

6 ( +12 / -6 )

Ukraine will be a member of NATO and Putin is going the way of Adolf.

7 ( +15 / -8 )

dear readers story is about Sweden pls go back to topic.

Another key foreign policy win for Biden - he and his State Dept team have shown real expertise and diplomatic skill - as compared to the chaos, incompetence, and dictator "love-letter" exchanges of his predecessor...

So Putin's 500-day war in Ukraine has re-energized NATO, brought Germany out of its long sleep, and added over 2 million new troops to the Alliance...

Someone needs to ask someone on the debate stage next month if they still think Putin is a "genius"...

3 ( +12 / -9 )

Lincoln,US has not been out one year from the lost cause in Afghanistan, when it embarked on another lost cause in Ukraine

-14 ( +2 / -16 )

lost cause in Afghanistan, when it embarked on another lost cause in Ukraine

> yes true took the soviets 10yrs to realize Afghanistan was a lost cause, Putin will realize the same with Ukraine

8 ( +12 / -4 )

However none can deny the NATO alliance slowly backed Russia into a corner.

So the whole situation isn't totally because of putin.

wrong Finland and Sweden populations had no desire to join NATO, Putin invading Ukraine changed all that, effectively he back Finland and Sweden into a corner and clearly flipped their populations neutral status

10 ( +16 / -6 )

Meanwhile have some cluster bombs and join the war crimes.

when your enemy attacks your civilians on a daily basis, kidnaps your children, you really dont have a say in the morality of it all

11 ( +15 / -4 )

WTF,as long as Putin gas is shipping through Ukraine,he will fight on

-18 ( +2 / -20 )

Good, though it should have happened earlier, Turkey has behaved despicably and it’s whole attitude has been at variance to the whole concept of NATO.

Actually seems Erdogan played this quite well if the below is true.

In return, Sweden and Turkey would continue to work bilaterally against terrorism, Sweden would help reinvigorate Turkey’s application to enter the European Union, and NATO would establish a new “special coordinator for counterterrorism,” he said.

In addition to expanding NATO membership, Putin may also be easing Türkiye’s admission to the EU. Another own goal.

Putin's plans to reestablish the Russian empire seem to have imploded, but he is still in power at the Kremlin, and still capable of causing a lot of mischief, mayhem, and murder.

10 ( +14 / -4 )

guess that wire transfer to the right people went through.

-19 ( +4 / -23 )

What ol' Jack Burton always says

America welcomes Sweden into the fray. I can understand why putin is angry at NATO, however what puntin wanted to feel safe was and is ridiculous. You cannot have it all putin. You are to blame. Not NATO

Yeah not sure that invasion of Ukraine was wise - however Russia did manage to snatch Crimea without much trouble.

However none can deny the NATO alliance slowly backed Russia into a corner.

Not at all. NATO is a defensive treaty that countries afraid of Putin requested to join. Turns out a good move for all who joined NATO. Putin can ascribe the existence of NATO to himself. If he hadn't constantly meddled with his ex-Soviet and Warsaw pact neighbours, NATO would probably not exist anymore.

So the whole situation isn't totally because of putin.

Actually, it is. 100%.

Mondieu, some on here really are permanently obsessed with Biden's predecessor - orange man is totally irrelevant to this article.

-12 ( +1 / -13 )

Putin just incompetent, only thing Russian have to do is destroy the Central Bank headquarters, and this would send Ukraine into a depression, with no central banking system

-19 ( +0 / -19 )

La vie douce

Except for the fact that we would not have this result if Orange man won the previous election. He was looking to disband NATO - what a disaster that would have been.

Many of our Putin apologists and conspiracy theorists told us Sweden would never join NATO, citing dodgy opinion polls and the like.

What a waste of time they are.

Agreed. No doubt in exchange for this Turkey also got some commitments from Biden about getting the F-16 Erdogan wanted.

-9 ( +3 / -12 )

Putin went to war against Ukraine to prevent the spread of NATO and has already failed on that point and has made NATO even stronger.

15 ( +17 / -2 )

Jimizo , Russian will never leave Ukraine, only by a nuclear strike,it not apologist,it reality

I think the walls have closed in on Putin apologists and conspiracy theorists making predictions.

They are absolutely useless. They started off telling us the very idea of an invasion was just MSM fear mongering and they just went downhill from there.

Stunningly awful.

Kurds thrown under the bus by Sweden in return for NATO membership. Brutal.

-19 ( +3 / -22 )

Since when did Northerners bend their knees to Turkish dictators?

Sounds like an extremist view of the agreement.

2 ( +7 / -5 )

Sweden and Turkey ironed out their differences in eleventh-hour talks.

Indeed, Sweden gave in for all demands of this dictator. We even changed the laws, as Erdogan had demanded:

Sounds like an extremist view of the agreement.

That is a general view both in Finland and in my country Sweden. If you read Finish or Swedish media, you'll understand our view of this so called "agreement".

Why is agreement in quotes? Did they not actually agree to it? Is it a conspiracy?

Also, both of these countries have many English speakers who put out well written English content. So I'm sure you can provide some links in English if you really want to.

Kurds thrown under the bus by Sweden in return for NATO membership. Brutal.

I am sympathetic to your extreme left-wing take on topics here Alfie but unfortunately the more extreme left-wing often go full circle and end up sharing a toilet cubicle with the extreme right-wing.

In this situation, both the Kurds and an international agreement on the Armenian Genocide are deeply regrettable collateral from the greater threat.

10 ( +10 / -0 )

Sweden in NATO is a no brainer and significantly strengthens NATO's defense capabilities. Any Ideas Putin and Xi had about world domination is unraveling thread by thread.

6 ( +8 / -2 )

Congrats, Sweden! Who's next?

5 ( +7 / -2 )

Hey, I'm a moderate - you should see some of the old lads back in the UK!

In this situation, both the Kurds and an international agreement on the Armenian Genocide are deeply regrettable collateral from the greater threat.

The endless betrayals of the Kurds over the past 100 years are truly abysmal - they seem to have been on the wrong end of every sheety stick that's been handed out. Still, if the price to be paid for Turkey defending Sweden is giving up some anti-Turkish terrorists/freedom fighters then it has to be paid....

What's it say? Last I heard Sweden was "considering" banning burning the Koran. That's not exactly bending the knee yet. Also even if they did, this could be reversed overnight whereas NATO membership is permanent.
