If she had filed a law-suit - and then decided to have an abortion - would not the participating medical staff be required to test the DNA of the fetus? If she decided not to have an abortion but suffered a miscarriage - wouldn't the participating medical staff be required to test the DNA of the fetus?

I'm not making a judgement about it - I'm sure this is not the 1st time such things have happened - surely there are laws for this kind of thing - indeed - perhaps in the case of a miscarriage or abortion - perhaps the DNA of the fetus should be mapped and stored for some duration (though 3 years doesn't seem economically viable)

it's interesting as an academic exercise - but I'm not sure I understand the point. There are plenty of beautiful real Japanese women. Not really gonna get the birthrate up with virtual beautiful women.

Could Japan and Canada enter some kind of trade agreement where Japan sends the typhoons hitting Japan to Canada to drench the forest fires?...

It should be born in mind that it's unfortunate that these forests are burning - but likely these same forests have absorbed a hell of a lot of CO2 from the atmosphere...this is nature...not politics...

Don't believe anyone has ever died over anything RW has said or done.

Don't believe RW is or has ever been investigated for corruption (or his wife for that matter)...

I think Roger Waters has become uncomfortably dumb

But I'd rather have a Roger Waters in this world than a Vladimir Putin or Benjamin Netanyahu

Sweden has every right to be in NATO...it's a vibrant democracy...it's got strong liberal-social ideals - and - this is important - a vast spectrum if ideals - and they manage that - they have been near to the threat of the USSR and now Russia for decades - they have some of the top private companies in the world - Ericsson, TetraPak, ABB, SKF, SAAB (who make state-of-the-art fighter planes)...

Their Neighbo[u]r Finland equally excellent -

I lived in Sverige for a few years - all my peers had to do military service - they hated it at the time but they love to talk about afterwards...

Perhaps that's a good idea for we western democratic countries to re-institute - compulsive military service - as opposed to paying off student loans or whatever - give them credits - I know all the cry foul folks will whine...but the world was a better place when the innovative and strong were the power-houses of the world...

Has to be done - think about it - on the UN security council you have a country that willfully invaded a neighbo[u]r....violation of the tenants of the UN...their [senior] partner threatens invasion of another democracy - Mao and Stalin are no longer here...but their doctrines are clearly followed in their homelands...Of course Japan would join G7 nations' sanctions - Japan has proven (since the war's end) to have been a very responsible world citizen - Even helping with debt re-structuring for 3rd world countries bent-over the table by China SPECIFICALLY to extract consessions/control...if you're gonna gripe about effect - gripe about the cause for that effect ALSO...

The article talks about disliking the opponent more than your "preferred" candidate - but may I just ask a simple objective question - how is Orange-kun not in violation of his oath of office? the Jan 6th debacle - inciting a mob - Sex lawsuits (before he was president - sure enough) - Trove of government documents - denial of a year of subpoenas...if any of us did any of that - we'd be wearing an orange suit

pretty dumb...

Taiwan is a democratic country...It doesn't have vast natural resources - it has earth quakes -

Foolish pride on the part of the main-land and if acted on would likely destroy China as a country economically The sanction on Russia would be a joke compare to what would happen to China

Posted in: Half of unmarried people under 30 in Japan do not want kids: survey See in context

I never wanted to have kids...then I had one...

Best experience of my life - you get to be a kiddo with your kiddo...the joy of discovery...I had my son relatively late in life (40)...and spoiled him rotten...but damn did we have a lot of fun...

I would come home from work - his mother was - "go take care of our kiddo"...I need some space...we'd go play...one day...playing hide-and-seek - I hid in the same place...2 times per interval...so he got used to looking for me...then I didn't...then I did...when he found me...in the same place - he had this big smile on his face - he got it - he understood the trick I'd played on him...my kiddo has a sense of humor...

You can't put a price on such an experience...

I think even if the world is going to hell...I'd like to think I've played a small part in making a young man's life enjoyable...

That is enough for me...

Wow - this is really one of the best articles I have read in a very long time -

Thank you JT for publishing it -

What an incredibly refreshing article.

I have never heard of Clifford - but will look him up -

Sort of peculiar - on the one hand - AI and data science is in the zeitgeist and obviously attention to defining outliers which might sway a result - sort of applying some sort of "standard" to valuable data

But by contrast information absorbed my millions of folks is largely biased and not fact checked (eg: cable news is not governed by FCC rules - basically can say anything their legal department isn't afraid of)

The irony here of course - is perhaps AI is more I than we are

I agree that actors should likely keep their mouths shut - they're actors - they pretend to be who they are portraying -

"It would boost the power of politicians over the court system, with Netanyahu saying it is the way to restore the balance between the branches of government."

imagine a politician (being investigated on corruption charges - shouldn't they all?)..saying something as absurd as "it is a way to restore balance between the branches of government"

And one single soul believing it?

With the unfortunate experience of Palestinians, the completely dysfunctional Israeli government and now this - does Israel still have the gall to describe themselves as "the only democracy in the middle east"?
