3,869 yen, the highest increase in 26 years.

Just pathetic. At least the cost of living has stayed generally low.

naturalbokeToday

Some additional information from Japanese language media:

The grandfather was incredibly candid and added the following information. Runa rarely attended school when she was young and had issues communicating with people. She did enjoy cosplaying and met Ura at a cosplaying event. Ura liked to cosplay as a female and Runa became a friend him without realizing he was a man. Runa apparently had a deep mistrust of men and avoiding speaking to them. At some point they ended up staying in the same hotel and during the night Ura allegedly sexually assaulted Runa. Destressed and angered by this she told her parents what had happened. The family then decided to hatch a plan to kill and behead the victim with Runa and her father planning and buying items for the murder. The mother has now also been accused of being a coconspirator.

That's going to be an interesting trial.

How about actually creating and enforcing bike lanes? There is currently no safe and legal place to ride.

Ura (62) involved in previous violent incident with Runa (29).

Ura's head filmed in bathroom of Osamu (59), father of Runa.

It's a bit confusing, but Runa and Osamu probably have to answer some important questions.

Posted in: In Japan, which bans dual custody, a table tennis star refuses to hand back her son to her ex See in context

So, my perspective on this is that

a) when a non-Japanese marries a Japanese person, this law (or lack thereof) should be known (at least be now, given all the publicity)

b) therefore, in the case of a divorce, the legal route (so popular elsewhere) is not going to work

c) therefore, you have to appeal to the ex-spouse's reason and, yes, humanity

I know very well that divorce can get really ugly really quickly. But if you know the limits of the law, you can sometimes go easy on the financial and other issues that often drag people into court in order to do what's best for the kids. (ie. put the interest of the kids first and don't threaten your ex).

I know lots of cases where the above approach worked out. It's not a legal battle. It's an appeal to the other party's better self.

Posted in: More Japan tourist hot spots imposing hotel taxes to fund promotions See in context

@Asiaman7

Do we really need to overspend by nearly 25 billion yen every year for tourism information centers? — particularly when so much information is freely available on the internet these days.

I seem to recall that, during the pandemic, large travel agencies (e.g. JTB) were tasked with keeping tabs on visitors. This was unpopular, of course, but at least it has some basis in reason. I'm not sure if this has anything to do with the tourism information centers, but it might.

cashing in on one of the few industries that generate profits--tourism. I don’t like it when I need a hotel, but I can’t really blame 'em. The last few decades have been an economic free fall.

Posted in: As Japan aligns with U.S. chip curbs on China, some in Tokyo feel uneasy See in context

China only has itself to blame. The government pays people to steal technology from countries such as the US so they can sell it back to them as cut rate prices. Maybe that was tolerated for commercial products, but defense? That's a bridge too far.

@JeffLee

I come from the country with the highest immigration rate in the OECD, and the place has become unlivable to a significant percentage of the population over the past few years It boasts the world's least affordable cities.

As @theResident correctly pointed out we are not talking about Canada.

Vancouver is overpopulated (you guys invited all of Hong Kong to stay, remember?).

Japan is underpopulated, and has not much immigration at present.

These things make a difference.

Know what tends to fundamentally improve the economy, raise birthrates and generally make a country a more innovative? Immigration. Without doing something to fundamentally change business as usual, Japan's a sinking ball of mochi.

The real problem is that people have lost faith in their government because of all the stupid coverups surrounding Fukushima.
