Osaka police ask public for help on girl missing since 2003

Osaka prefectural police on Sunday appealed to the public for any information that might help them find out what happened to a nine-year-old girl who went missing on May 20, 2003, in the town of Kumatori near Osaka Bay.

Usually, each year, police and support groups of Yuri Yoshikawa's family hand out posters at Nankai Electric Railway’s Nanba Station. On Sunday, her 62-year-old mother Miwako was among those who handed out flyers to commuters at the station.

Yoshikawa is believed to have been abducted while she was on her way home from school. No trace of her has been found since.

During the past 20 years, police have followed up on thousands of leads and there is a 3 million yen reward offered for information concerning Yuri’s fate.

Police said the only tangible lead they have is that a white Toyota Crown was seen driving away from the area where Yuri is believed to have been abducted, with a male driver and a young girl in the front passenger seat.

Anyone with any information is asked to call the Izumisano police station at 072-464-1234.

3 million is helpful but 6 or 10 is even better, money talks for those who know something about the child but are holding off or afraid of the risks. Feel so sorry for the mother and the family this must be a life time Torture for them.

No trace of her has been found since.

In my line of work, I believe that this sentence should never be used in a report in any cases. Because it lets the person(s) know that they can do what they did again and would never be caught. Instead "Police are certain the perp would be caught because of the new DNA equipment and testing facilities that have improved over the years!" would cause the perp to slip up which could lead to an arrest.

Why is this happening only after 20 years? What have been the ongoing efforts since the beginning? I think the laws should be changed to “just let her go.” If you return the girl alive, then you will get a reduced sentence. Maybe hospitalization. No matter how horrible the experience, being alive is better. Almost none of these girls are returned alive.

She's most likely dead.

This appeal has been made several times.

There was a recent case in China of an abducted child who was found after 30+ years. It happens.

Wow, that level of optimism and hope, huh!

For so long I've seen this poster at a subway station that I pass through weekly here in Osaka. All the other posters and advertising gets changed several times a year except this one.

I hope the police continue to work on the case and the Yoshikawa's one day find out what happened to their beautiful girl Yuri.

So how about following that crystal clear lead? You can’t tell me that there were so many white Crowns on the road in 2003 that it is impossible to harshly interrogate every single driver , owner and others with car access of them during 20 years. Better don’t let me do it, I would squeeze not only that missing Yuri but probably another whole additional disappeared kindergarten or school out of those few potential suspects, that’s for sure.

Because clearly you're the first one to ever have thought about it.

Wow.

My heart goes out to her parents who have campaigned all these years for their missing child.

When a loved one goes missing....its worse than death, with death there is some kind of closure, but 'Missing' is a never ending nightmare, because you are always left wondering !?!?!? I speak from experience.

common sense

It is heart breaking and I have a lot of sympathy for the parents who are still continuing with their efforts to find their daughter. They had a promising lead a few years after Yuri-chan went missing, but it was found to be a time-wasting couple trying to extort money from the Yoshikawas.

I remember when these posters first came out in Osaka, they were posted at stations, police boxes and other places. My daughter who was youngin at the time asked me to explain about a flyer we received from the police at Namba station.

Now, my daughter is grown up and is an adult. Whenever, the media reports about this case the same time every year, I suddenly get a spell of sadness for the Yoshikawas.

Yes, it’s incredibly sad isn’t it. I can never fathom why anyone would wish to harm a child, it’s incomprehensible to me. No parents should ever have to go through trauma like this, the world can be a dark place at times.

Why is this happening only after 20 years?

Easy, makes the police and the city look bad, not keeping in line with their 99% conviction rate. Old cases are included in the stats. Gotta cover everthing.

Japan is very good at finding bodies, even if it is years late. I think it's more likely she's healthy, and has been groomed or brainwashed into some other lifestyle.

Sounds like North Korea.

Has nothing to do with who the kid is. After 20 years if you don't find a child chances are they are dead.

They said something about the Japanese in North Korea. And Even if it were true, you could show some understanding to parents of girl.

What proof do you have that N Korea had anything to do with this?

And Even if it were true, you could show some understanding to parents of girl.

You one of the parents? Are they posting on this site?

I'm simply stating a fact that there is a good chance that she is dead.
