Daily stories about the population decline and yet women are still being forced to choose between having children or a decent career. If my girlfriend takes a job interview she is outright asked if she has a partner or plans on having kids. Now we live in a world where a family with one child is pretty much forced to have a dual income, and yet this is made nearly impossible. If Japan was at all serious about fixing the population decline problem all of this would have been addressed decades ago.

What they they and other devolved countries should have done is ensure a working man can make enough to provide for his family like in the old days, instead of siphoning off dough to the Mega rich. Wage inequality charts show what they’ve been up to, the bounders.

Work ain’t usually a great time for most people including blokes, pretty sure most women would prefer to be away from the rat race To be honest, it’s no life, it’s nothing.,

The whole system is corrupt, women should be able to have children and be able to care for them until they are independent. Imagine a woman has a baby and nit long after she’s back at work. Must be devastating for any woman unless she’s heartless.

Once again participants/protestors carry placards written in English. Why?

Do they think native speakers of English in Japan are to blame for the problem?

if you look for more images on google you can find that the march was organized by an international organisation and that they had signs in japanese as well. JT probably used one picture with an English sign so people here can understand it immediately, probably just an editors choice.

The world has changed, but Japan is still stuck in the 1950s. The antediluvian attitudes towards women here are embarrassing for a supposedly advanced country.

Afaik that's illegal. But who is going to sue an interviewer, right? Especially if it's something everyone does.

The Japanese "education" system has a lot to answer for in brainwashing women into thinking they are inferior to men. Our daughters went to international schools.

I’m currently pregnant and a sole proprietor. Sole proprietors are not entitled to maternity leave payments the same way that full time employees are, even though we pay into the same health care and tax system. Given that women are more concentrated in contract work, temp jobs, and freelance work in order to balance home life responsibilities and not have the pressure of work commitments outside of work hours, I am surprised that maternity leave benefits are not extended. It’s difficult to decide to have a child when you know you won’t get paid at all during childbirth.

Tamanegi. the English signs are for the foreign press. Making Japan look bad on the international stage and in the international press has more chance of getting a reaction from the government. Japanese signs have no effect overseas as so few people can read them.

I don't know what wage gap they are talking about, if there would be a wage gap and women are making less money then every business would like to get as many women as possible due to the fact that they would bring down the labour cost.

Not every woman and not every man is cooking.

There is plenty of take-out food, ready to eat food you need only to put in the microwave - and I would not call this to be cooking...

Maybe these 12 percent do not cook at all - just go to restaurants or buy some bento to take home from a supermarket?

The former is the percentage of cooking that is done by women.

The latter is the percentage of men who cook.

Either the former needs to say "80% of women do the cooking", or the latter needs to say "Men did 8% of the cooking", if they are trying to compare the same things.

While my wife has her own business; she is the exception amongst our female friends and acquaintances, most of whom openly say they aspire to marrying a guy rich enough that they don't have to work. Given such attitudes, who is WEF to chide Japanese women for not wanting to work an 80 hr+ work week?

Got an Idea, how about start Educating and Training Men to share Household Responsibilities so their partners can have the time space to get a good paying job.

Japan is led by old Japanese men who don’t have a clue about gender equality. It is time for women throughout the country to organize, Unionize, protest and demonstrate in the streets throughout Japan.

Well said…(!); unfortunately, that’s not easy because of certain things… things that I mentioned in my previous comment (and all I got was downvotes).

Yes, embrace the western economic planning of eliminating the one breadwinner family, pay taxes on two incomes to employ more government workers, spend more on childcare and don’t worry about the kids, buy into the mantra that every woman should be working because the hard work of raising a family can never be as fulfilling as spending half your day getting ready for work, traveling to work, working and traveling home from work, eat dinner, spend an hour staring at TV, go to sleep and do it all again tomorrow.

Demand your right to this ideal oasis of a life.

My wife is Japanese however i do 95% of the cooking and 75% of the housework whilst she does all the laundry and we both take out the trash and both work fulltime.

It works out well.

We are equal and nobody's the head of the household.

My household is similar to yours. My wife and I are around 50/50 with the cooking. I take care of breakfast and my wife takes care of most of the dinners, but I also cook when she's busy and on weekends. I do the laundry most of the time and I always take out the trash. We sometimes change chores and that's not a problem. We're both full-timers too since we see our kids as old enough to be responsible for themselves when they get home from school. Great for you and your wife!

It came by simply understanding what English words mean when you put them in a specific order.
