Putin tells Poland any aggression against Belarus is attack on Russia

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday accused NATO member Poland of having territorial ambitions in the former Soviet Union, and said any aggression against Russia's neighbor and close ally Belarus would be considered an attack on Russia.

Moscow would react to any aggression against Belarus, which forms a loose "Union State" with Russia, "with all the means at our disposal", Putin told a meeting of his Security Council in televised remarks.

Warsaw's Security Committee decided on Wednesday to move military units to eastern Poland after members of the Russian Wagner mercenary force arrived in Belarus, the state-run news agency PAP quoted its secretary as saying on Friday.

Poland denies any territorial ambitions in Belarus.

In his remarks Putin had also stated that the western part of Poland was a gift from Soviet leader Joseph Stalin to the country and that Russia would remind Poles about it.

In apparent reference to that, Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki tweeted on Friday evening that "Stalin was a war criminal, guilty of the death of hundreds of thousands of Poles. Historical truth is not debatable."

"The ambassador of the Russian Federation will be summoned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs", he said.

On Thursday, Belarus said Wagner mercenaries had started to train Belarusian special forces at a military range just a few miles from the Polish border.

Russia has in recent weeks begun stationing tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus for the first time. The Kremlin said Putin would meet Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, with whom he speaks regularly, in Russia on Sunday.

German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said on Friday that Germany and NATO were prepared to support Poland in defending the military alliance's eastern flank.

Putin said there were press reports of plans for a Polish-Lithuanian unit to be used for operations in western Ukraine - parts of which in the past belonged to Poland - and ultimately to occupy territory there.

"It is well known that they also dream of the Belarusian lands," he said, also without providing any evidence.

On Wednesday, Wagner chief Yevgeny Prigozhin was shown in a video welcoming his fighters to Belarus, telling them they would take no further part for now in the war in Ukraine but ordering them to gather strength for Wagner's operations in Africa while they trained the Belarusian army.

Prigozhin says Wagner, which led the conquest of the Ukrainian city of Bakhmut, is Russia's most effective fighting force. But his frequent clashes with the Moscow defense establishment led him to stage an armed mutiny four weeks ago.

The insurrection ended with an agreement that Wagner fighters - many recruited from prison - could move to Belarus if they wished.

Just a few miles from the NATO border... curious.

The important thing to remember is that any skirmishes between NATO and Wagner are in no way connected to the Kremlin.

Since the coup (which stopped on a dime), the Kremlin has disavowed any and all official ties to Wagner.

Wagner is now a private loose cannon group, unaccountable to any country.

When Russia moves your country you should be thankful! Smh at this pint sized fuhrer.

Since Russia upset the balance in Eastern Europe, they should be thankful there aren't 50,000 US troops on the Belarusian border. That should be the next step, actually.

And vice-versa, mini-me.

Better keep your rubes in line lest NATO stop helping the Ukrainians to kick your army’s ass and just start doing it themselves.

You keep telling yourself if it helps you get through the day.

Doesn't make it true.

Yep. Any aggression from Belarus is attack by Russia. That works both ways.

The west is already attacking Belarus with sanctions. They are banned from even playing sport.

.

Moving Wagner forces to Belarus and close to the Ukraine border, may be a first step in another attack on Ukraine from Belarus.

Will Putin lapdog Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko send his forces into Ukraine, opening the northern front to stretch Ukraine forces ?

Putin is dreaming up ways to deflect attention away from his war in Ukraine and rally the support of nationalist. The country he really needs to worry about is Turkey, who are increasingly siding with Ukraine and eyeing up territory in Syria controlled by Assad/Wagner as well as other wider interests in the region and Black Sea. Worsened relations between Russia and Turkey resulting from the end of the grain deal and the threat to commercial shipping could widen the conflict.

yes.

any problem with that?

That's right be scared - or Putin will send his crack private Wagner army to crush you....

Wait...maybe he won't...

Vlad is all talk - and trying to stave off another coup....

He's never been weaker - and it shows every time he opens his mouth...

Putin is looking to have a direct go at NATO.

In this photo, Putin looks as if someone knocked the chip off his shoulder. The smart-ass smirk isn’t there now.

After everything that has happened in the last few weeks, you have to wonder if Putin is really in charge or is he just a puppet.

the western part of Poland was a gift from Soviet leader Joseph Stalin to the country

Well, they basically moved Poland to the west, giving large parts of Germany to Poland (eg Wroclaw, formerly Breslau.), but the point is that Putin can justify this "gift" but won't do the same for Khrushchev and Crimea etc to Ukraine.

any aggression against Russia's neighbor and close ally Belarus would be considered an attack on Russia.

That sounds an awful lot like the gist of Article 5.

I thought Vladdyboy objected strongly to NATO practices? But it’s OK for him to do the same?

The cognitive dissonance is strong with this one.

Kind of interesting and the possible start of WW3.

if the far right wing NATO attacks Belarus, then Belarus will retaliate to Poland or the Baltic states. But this month they will have Russian nukes.

-15 ( +3 / -18 )

Putin wants to invade the Poland and Lithuania land between Belarus and Kaliningrad.

That would be an invasion of NATO bringing Article 5.

The important thing to remember is that any skirmishes between NATO and Wagner are in no way connected to the Kremlin.

Putin fully stated that Wagner was completely funded by the Kremlin. That connection will not just disintegrate, it is logged now in historical fact.

Since the coup (which stopped on a dime), the Kremlin has disavowed any and all official ties to Wagner.

Well except asking its members to take contracts with the Russian military, or to fight on under their "real" commander. Apparently not Yevgeny Prigozhin.

Wagner is now a private loose cannon group, unaccountable to any country.

They now seem to be contracted to work for Belarus, are based there and are training the special forces of Belarus. That makes them for the time being at least the responsibility of Belarus. Any action Wagner takes from Belarus would be considered an attack by both Russia and Belarus and no amount of "but no" will convince anyone otherwise.

No, troops on the border are troops on the border. Just like how Russia has their troops anywhere they see fit, so should NATO.

7 ( +10 / -3 )

Poland are right to transfer troops to the border region, it's is sensible, but this situation is also alarming and the language by Putin sounds ominous, in that there could be a will here to expand the war and really test NATO's mettle. Bigger wars start like this.

6 ( +8 / -2 )

It was Putin/Lukashenko who weaponized illegal immigrants by flying them to Belarus and busing them to the Polish border. Many died from winter conditions.

That was in 2021 before Putin invaded Ukraine.

Just tell PUTAin and his buddy in Belarus, Luka-what's-his-name to get lost!

Ukraine prevails!

Yes, but if Wagner forces enter Ukraine and attack Poland or Lithuania from there, article 5 can't be invoked against Belarus or Russia.

Wagner is not affiliated with Russia and officially, the Kremlin has disavowed all legal ties between it and Wagner.

Since the coup operation, Wagner is a stateless orphan, similar to ISIS in northern Syria, no country takes responsibility for it.

Yes, it can because the Wagner group is employed by Russia.

Wagner is not affiliated with Russia and officially, the Kremlin has disavowed all legal ties between it and Wagner.

Wagner is paid and supplied with arms by Putin.

Since the coup operation, Wagner is a stateless orphan, similar to ISIS in northern Syria, no country takes responsibility for it.

We all know that is a lie.

6 ( +8 / -2 )

If the Wagner Group enters Poland or Lithuania it will have zero air cover and will be bombed to death by NATO. Their camp in Belarus will also be a target for NATO bombers.

5 ( +6 / -1 )

Yes, but if Wagner forces enter Ukraine and attack Poland or Lithuania from there, article 5 can't be invoked against Belarus or Russia.

Interesting idea, maybe NATO should similarly employ a mercenary group, to deploy on the border with Kaliningrad, give us some "plausible deniability" for an invasion of previously Prussian territory, you know since "historically speaking" Russians shouldn't even be there.

5 ( +5 / -0 )

Putin also needs to understand any attack against Poland and Lithuania is an attack against NATO.

4 ( +6 / -2 )

Putin tells Poland any aggression against Belarus is attack on Russia

Can Russia handle wars on two fronts at once? They're already having troubles on another front. Do they want to be dealing with another?
