I made a (rightfully deleted) comment at the start of the thread that the booming popularity of women's football was bound to upset some folks because the only things they hate more than men playing soccer are women playing sport. And maybe Libs. And then we have this.

Not ones in which the team that is better at pretending to fall over and be injured prevail. I prefer cheaters and poor sportspeople to be penalized, not rewarded

I'm guessing you prefer a sport that lasts many hours spread over a not many months and has lots of toilet breaks. Either that or rounders.

Anyway, it's great to see the women's game doing so well and the players getting wealthier from their efforts. The standard is getting better and better.

I’d assume they mean another hyped up typhoon event

I thought as much. Well, to each their own opinion, of course. But having been conscious when a typhoon in 2018 knocked our power out for 36 hours, I prefer to err on the side of caution. We don't get that many typhoons in Kansai anyway, and this one announced itself quite impressively. I'm glad it was just huffing and puffing a bit (my garden is a bit dissheveled, though). But one only has to look to Kyushu to see that not every typhoon event is "hyped up".

Generally, I'm a wee bit worried about the tendency to discard every warning as "hyped" or "fearmongering", and very much if it happens retrospectively.

Yeah right. Like you gave a crap about women's soccer 10 years ago

I remember watching Japan win the World Cup. Still remember Sawa. Cracking player.

Anyway, the standard since then has increased markedly.

The interest worldwide has seen extraordinary growth.

I don’t know why some seem peevish about this. I’d applaud it.

Fair enough. All sports have their negatives I suppose. I’d disagree that the teams better at cheating usually prevail. It’s more usually down to quality. Trust me, I’ve been following a side not strangers to the dark arts for years and we are s###e.

Anyway, what sports do you follow mate?

They sound great.

Nice try, Fumio! But history has the receipts. The one thing that has changed in my thinking about the Japanese and WW2 is the realization that the Japanese soldiers who did the killing were for the most part young adults, children to a man of my years, who were coerced into uniform and dispatched abroad to kill in the name of the Emperor. They were victims, too, of nationalistic brainwashing by a fascist military government and the dead and the surviving maimed and traumatized deserve our compassion and understanding. But not so those who planned the war that cost the lives of 30 million and more. The correct attitude of Japanese today should be to excoriate and condemn those who launched the wars of aggression against their Asian neighbors and the so-called "ABCD" powers, but, unlike the Germans, those who have ruled post-war Japan have stubbornly refused to condemn the actions of their extreme right-wing militarist predecessors.

The issue stems from war criminals combined with Shinto beliefs.

In Shinto Enshrinement at Yasukuni gives absolution of earthly deeds to those enshrined their. There by forgiving those war criminals of any crimes they committed during WW2

Imagine if Germany did that to their war dead and included their war criminals. And then you had heads of the government visiting and sending offerings.

Japan always be a victim when it comes to World War II,

And the west always thinks it is the good guy.

Who started the war with the US with a cowardly sneak attack? It'll probably take you a few minutes to figure that out.

Re: “Elaborate please” comment.

To elaborate for the commenter, I’d assume they mean another hyped up typhoon event, the likes of which have almost never amounted to much over the past 60 years. There were a couple scary ones about five years ago, one of which caused big problems for Kansai International Airport, but no comparison to those old time Japan. Basically, typhoons in modern day Japan are hugely over-hyped, and are something to get excited about for people who need something to get excited about.

Lets celebrate the the women's game ascending through performance and increased returns and rewards.

There is no such equal pay model in the beautiful game regardless of gender.

The pay and rewards are contractual and based solely on revenue based modeling.

https://thepfsa.co.uk/football-wages-how-much-do-footballers-get-paid/

Good footballers are in high demand because they increase the likelihood of a team winning a title, which means the team will make considerable amounts of cash by selling broadcasting rights, tickets and merchandise to its fans.

It’s all about supply and demand. Believe it or not, there’s a shortage of players that can hit the same mark as the likes of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. What this means is that clubs need to bid for players, outbidding each other to ensure they win the best players who, in turn, will take the club further and earn it money. It’s a win-win situation – for those directly involved, at least.

As a young German my recollections of WW2 history being taught in school are recent, about 7yrs ago. Our teaching was comprehensive and left nothing out, we even had to visit Nazi concentration camps, which is some thing I will never forget. Later as a student of history and P.Science at Uni I learned so much more about what happened the world over, and it was not very pleasant. The war crimes, committed by the Japanese army were atrocious, from China to Indonesia, in fact, in all the Pacific countries they occupied. The murder of unarmed civilians was unparalleled except by the Germans and Russians. Yes, do not forget Stalin, one of the winners. War crimes were committed by all the countries but we do not hear much about the ones who 'won' the war. The history of WW 2 should be taught in every school around the world, but I doubt if this would even resonate with modern students who's grasp on any thing historic is minimal. In fact I have met young students who know nothing of 9/11 in NY. I do not know the depth of what is taught in Japanese schools, but every thing should be included. Every thing.

They naysayers were wrong in their pre-tournament assumptions

To be fair, their narrative has changed.

The initial claim that ‘nobody’ is interested in it has been dismissed with the speed it deserved. Risible nonsense from sulking teenagers.

We are now at the stage where it is claimed that the only people who watch it do it through guilt.

I heard one beauty that people have in on the telly but don’t really watch it. I thought that was quite adorable.

I think we would be better arguing is women’s football a more popular spectacle than many men’s sports.

It already is and it’s still growing

I did do something about it. I married a Japanese and our families came together.

> Fantastic, mate. Well done, Fair play. But why do you want Kishida to apologise every year? Are you asking your wife to apologise as well?

PM Kishida is in a temporary position. If each year there is a ceremony to mark the surrender of Japan then it can include a short but meaningful apology.

People who committed those crimes already apologized and punished. Governments moved on, so did America. Now Japan and America are best friends (more like suzerain and vassal).

I am sorry but many people who committed war crimes were not even prosecuted. A small section of Class A war criminals were tried and sentenced to death. None of them apologized for their crimes.

And Kishida is adressing to his people. He is not standing in front of UN to all of a sudden apologise. Context bro. Nobody owes you an apology

Every year, other countries like China are watching these events.

I also strongly believe school kids should be taught about the war.
