The West have given way too much credence to these jokers, and the results are the same every time. Blinken with his deliberate soft talking ‘blinkers’ on, and Kerry getting publicly b slapped by Xi on the environment. All perfectly planned and executed for maximum effect. When do we learn that these guys are playing a different game?

With its highly opaque political system abetted by strict controls over the media and civil society, it is difficult to gauge how Xi and other Chinese leaders see the relationship at this point.

Don’t think it’s hard at all. Contempt is what they feel, a revenge itch that cannot be scratched. Entitled, over inflated and delusional . Why dance around the facts? Don’t want to hurt their feelings? They do!

Lot of sad lonely people out there wondering what their conveyor belt life is all about, never been given the mental goods to fully process what’s going on nor imagine that there are options.

If the hotline calls are on the rise the least the government can do is to hire more staff to accommodate them. At least try. The sad fact is how little it really takes to connect, and how little encouragement people really need to pick themselves back up again.

The culture instinct to non-action unfortunately tends to drop the ball . Most prefer to be spectators to the problem, aware of it but just lacking the will or the courage to help out. Watch the numbers keep rising as the masks stay on, and if you see the signs make the moves!

When diversity and equity become all you need to think you can run a country, reality has a way of hitting hard and waking you right up. You either get the message early in the game, or something dramatic happens to force you to face the facts.

Hope this lady gets all the help she needs and stays away from the halls of power and government. The justice minister behind the wheel drunk.....

Conservatives in New Zealand, do your thing, clean up the mess this mob has created, and learn from it. Then let the pendulum swing as it always does.

Likewise, I am amazed at your ability to believe anything that a charged person says then jumps bail. If everything Ghosn claimed were true he would have faced trial and used that forum to prove his points.

Ah, I see thanks. I guess you haven't been on the receiving end of the dark side of the J work culture. Anything goes when you can huddle together as a group. The moral compass ( if it ever existed ) goes out the window.

What are we other than the sum total of our experiences? Happy for you in a way!

Ossan, I’m amazed at your ability to overlook the nature of his arrest by a cabal of backstabbing, colluding, snake like figures that would go to any lengths to out the guy. Whichever way you look at it , it was an utter disgrace. Dark, shadow like, secretive, cruel betrayal . I’m one of those Ghosn fanboys and like him, one that thinks revenge is a dish best served cold , and hope the perpetrators of this ghoulish behavior and those that enable the system of actors trying to cover it up don’t sleep well at night. Hope they have nightmares, because it’s energy that simply won’t go away until the true nature of their actions and justice comes to light. Deep in their heart of hearts those that planned the downfall of Ghosn and Greg Kelly ( entrapped after being lied to then arrested despite prosecutors knowing that new he needed a back operation remember ) surely know that they have made a moral misjudgment . I wonder if they would do it all again?

Ghosn was never going to get a fair trial here and he acted accordingly. Let the truth come out organically instead of some stiff, self serving and inhumane legal system.

I’m just trying to think to myself, which could do the most damage? An out of touch old geezer so set in his ways it hurts, or some young J pop idol looking populist that knows literally nothing of the world ( beyond the perfect haircut ) nor has any experience in it, but for some mysterious reason believes he can and should run a country!

It’s a fairly close call!

Ah the greatest banner to fly on Earth. The “I’m an environmentalist” banner, I am literally saving the world with my comments and feelings. The easiest and shortest route to self gratification , with the least effort necessary , all while doing absolutely nothing for it. I get it y’all, it’s a good deal.

From the sounds of it Japan has been very pragmatic of lates with its energy mix strategy. They have realized that much of the green movement is just posturing and bannerism, they’ve seen what’s happened to the likes of Germany and are very aware that they need to stay ground in reality. They will do things their way and it will work for them too.

Career bureaucrats , those that don’t have to perform per sei, in the real world, but somehow think that they have the right to run it. I imagine a major part of your average self serving yes-man-by-trade public servant duties, would be navigating the inner party jostlings , power grabbing and back scratching that goes hand in hand with this particular class. The fact that they regularly abuse and cannibalise each other ( then make a report! ) also comes as little surprise.

The real workforce are out there busy actually working. Must to nice to be made for life if you just keep your head down! ;P

Very much seems like the Japanese version of a middle finger to the regional opponents of the water release. Get over to Europe and get them to lift food import curbs and restrictions from the danger zone. That’s some nice politicking right there! Kishida looks absolutely chuffed with himself.

I could name a few highly strung and repressed cultures that a good spliff maybe just what the doctor ordered! Thailand has bet big on this.

Authoritarians however, will have an instinctual aversion and fear to legalizing what should never have been illegal in the first place. Sitting high ( excuse the pun ) and mighty on their chairs, judging a thing they have no knowledge of, ill-informed and entitled, deciding for other people what they can and can't do. Strange times we live in.

Posted in: Japan defends neutrality of IAEA report on Fukushima water release plan as minister visits plant See in context

Just watched the full press briefing by the panel of Korean-led detractors at the Foreign Correspondents Club. ( its on YouTube although the comment section is unfortunately turned off ) They were stating their case for opposition to the water release and I was hoping to hear a well-informed sophisticated and scientifically grounded argument as to why the plan needs rethinking or even to be halted. Instead, we got a low-resolution, vague emotional plea from non-experts, zero alternative plans or suggestions for an alternative solution, nor any compelling evidence that the danger is as grave as they say it is. Disorganized tunnel vision activism.

If this is all they have, then this is just a political action from Koreans who still harbor deep anti-Japanese sentiments and are using the issue to try and get a cheap boot in. When pressed on the science of their claims no one could answer, it was an absolute shemozzle a rather awkward one as well. No doubt there were some serious journalists in attendance. 2/10 for effectiveness in changing anyone's mind panel, you may wanna get your points in line if you want to appeal to the world.

Having said that Japans communication skills on the issue could also do with improvement. A sharp scientific base and wit should be able to finish this one quite easily. But as usual, no one steps to the line and then you have to deal with misinformed opposition. As with many problems, its a messaging problem at the base.

All eyes are on Japan as it’s aging society is a window onto what most developed countries are going to face in their near future. Japan has also known what it is up against with its demographic cliff for the good part of thirty years. They say a good way to judge a nation or a culture is how it treats its most vulnerable. That’s where the soul of the nation is revealed.

Let’s see if the solutions arise, because well, where there’s a will there’s a way!
