Maybe they should go through discipline training before given access to deadly weapons...

JGSDF training procedures must be revised to prevent such an incident from ever happening again. Actually, there was a similar shooting incident at a Ground Self-Defense Force training facility in Yamaguchi Prefecture, in 1984...

Obviously not suitable for the military when he can't take even any ounce of criticism. In the military more than any other organization, you have to accept that you are going to get orders or yelled at from superiors

Do you seriously think this is just a matter of "discipline"?

Maybe his feelings were hurt and the shooting range lacked a safe space for him to recover?

"opened fire after being admonished by a 52-year-old instructor, and that he was only targeting one of the three men who were shot."

That's a good reason to be yelled at, inside a firing range, if I've ever heard one.

If only they can channeled his behaviour toward real enemy, by now any enemy Japan has, they have advantage by this fratricide inside Japanese military.

As soon as I saw the first reports on the TV I immediately thought bullying would be a part of this story, obviously doesn’t make it right at all.

"Discipline training"? What's "discipline training"? You mean the discipline recruits are subject to from Minute 1 of entering the military? Yeah, they get that.

I served for 16 years. Once you give a man a weapon, he has every opportunity to suddenly decide to stand up, turn around, and murder someone. All that stops him is his conscience as a human being, or eventually, the instructors around him.

Frederik has clearly never served a day in uniform, but like many, he just needs to chime in with his opinion.

I assume you've never been in a gun range. They don't come with emotional recovery facilties.

@Fredrik Does that include potty training? That's what your illogical post suggest

@qazwsx

Obviously not suitable for the military

1) SDF is not a military, but an armed police similar to coast guard.

2) SDF members, including this gunman, are civilians who are arrested by police and tried at civilian court.

3) Japan can't afford to be choosy about the quality of SDF applicants given the lack of applicants.

I get what you're saying. When I read the article and saw he only joined in April I was also thinking it might be wise to have a longer non-lethal weapon training period. The guy obviously wasn't very disciplined if he only intended to shoot 1 person but shot 3.

You assume incorrectly. Your comment completey fails as sarcasm, but succeeds as stupidy with flying colors.
