How many people attended?

How many people attended?

Over 40,000.

A great many of those tickets were probably given out for free, though.

I hope the US team loses ... and I'm American.

Lots of them dislike America -- and even though they literally lost to a team of 15-year-old boys while playing a sport where they need to give out free tickets to even hope to fill the stadiums, they still whine about not being paid as much as the men.

This was endlessly parroted by rightwing North American podcast watchers.

Anyone with any knowledge of football would know players wouldn’t be at full-throttle in a game like this. A manager would be furious if they did. The risk of injury in a meaningless fixture is too high.

Questions unanswered:

What team was put out?

What substitutions were made?

What formations were used?

I’m sure you watched the game and can answer these questions.

Looking forward to the breakdown.

Lol was the sun in their eyes too? The fact that you have to ask all of these qualifiers is unintentionally hilarious and obliterated the point you’re trying to make.

Do you think if the best NBA players were blown out by a high school girls squad that the first questions asked would be “well substations were made?!” “Who was playing point!?” “Were they in zone!?!” “Were Ashley and Kim double teaming Lebron?!?”

That’s the point. It shouldn’t matter. The skill level and physicality discrepancy should be so vast that all of those qualifies should be academic.

But they weren’t.

They lost.

I’m sure the substitution strategy was to blame though. :D

So, did anyone actually watch the match?

I’m getting the feeling people are just regurgitating what they saw on rightwing North American podcasts again.

Oh, dear boy, no.

You clearly aren’t well informed about football - hence the jump to a different, less interesting and less popular sport.

In pre-season friendlies you can get all kinds of weird results with top sides not at full-throttle.

Players pulling out of tackles, kids given a run out, even not really arsed about the result. Managers sometimes call it things like getting minutes in legs. A run-out.

Like everyone else. I’d need to see the game before judging.

It’s like reserving judgement on films you haven’t seen.

Just common sense really

Australia and NZ are great sporting countries but not football crazy. Maybe not the best choices.

More indicative could be a stat I just saw where an estimated 1.1 billion watched the last women’s World Cup.

There is a belief this World Cup could shatter that.

Pretty good going.

How big could it get? Many ( most? ) men’s sports are nowhere near the 2019 figures.

Well done to the tournament favourites, the Stars and Stripes. Hats off to the Vietnam ladies - football is growing hugely in SE Asia, so hopefully they will get stronger from the experience.

No matter what happens in this women's world cup - already the most tickets have been sold for a women's event in history- some men will continue to belittle women playing sport. Any sport.

Clearly these negative whiners are not bringing up daughters.

Not the greatest play. But WC is about improving as the games go along. Rodman was impressive, and the young newbies are skilled, but when Rapinoe and especially Lavelle could see how breaking down the defense by veterans were effective.

It'll take this entire tournament for USA to get it all together, but they've got talent, and with the veteran presence, hopefully they will be efficient and the game improves.

The difference in the have's and have not's is big in this WC. It is a truth, and the best teams will win by 3-5 goals consistently over the lesser teams. Pragmatics, not bias.

It was nice to see the Vietnam team in the WC, and their goalkeeper was outstanding. Very small, but she was competitive and aware. Kudos to her and the in the box play of defense, which was pretty good. USA just too skilled, too big and too strong. Can't believe Alex didn't get a goal....

Much gratitude to the Vietnamese team for keeping it close. Couldn't bear to watch the incessant and corny choreographed celebrations performed by the USWNT when they ran up the score against Thailand during the last WC.

Hmm...no US bias here, eh???

I liked the part where only three US team members placed their hand on their heart and sang their national anthem, while the rest put their hands behind their back or at their side while looking down and silent.

Jizimo

Every actually played sports? Or are you a fat shite sunday footballer? You can easily check the box score and recap of that U15 Dallas v USWNT game. Men are just so far ahead of women in sports. The best high school boys basketball teams literally run the women off the court. I'd watch the women's WC but there is a junior high soccer match that's more competitive and high level

Lol, people are just pissed that the USWNT actually wins multiple championships unlike their men's, so they're resorting to using a practice scrimmage to prove a point

Even the dominant US men's basketball team lost a practice game handily to a group of developmental league players. Do ya think they care? As Allen Iverson once ranted: "I mean, listen, we talking about practice." Lol

But it doesn't matter anyway - the US men's soccer national team supports their women getting equal pay. It's their money to decide and share, so it's funny that other people are indignant about it even though it's not those people's money

USWNT footballers have begun their campaign on the front foot. Congratulations. The Golden Star Women Warriors of Vietnam have work to do. All the best.
